I think a Tier 8 light would honestly need a smoothbore. Sure the penetration would be off da rails, but it's still just a 90.

The M41 which comes with M48A1 has 263 penetration - with APCR - and apparently they aren't shy to give APCR as primary ammo to top tier tanks, so they could use that.

Lights don't need top notch penetration anyway, since they are perfect for flanking.

Yeah. Normal ammo on M41 has 173 penetration. That's enough to kill literally everything.
