I think the vast majority of players agree that arty is no fun to fight because it literally chimes in and ruins everyone's fun, and no fun to actually play because of the appalling XP requirements.
It's just a genuinely bad mechanic that outright hurts the flow of the game. There really is nothing good about it. As you said it's not fun to play as because of the huge random elements and it certainly isn't fun to die to something you couldn't affect. It forces camping because everyone is too afraid of high accuracy orbital bombardments to move out. I don't mind having a unit to punish the heavy tanks, someone has to do it, so give it to the role of the tank destroyers.
I've touched on this before but just look at clan wars. It's the purest form of internet tanks and it's a complete joke. 2-4 artillery, rest heavies with a token medium/light/TD if you are missing someone or the map is scout friendly. Everyone goes to cover than waits for one poor sombitch to stick his turret out to check on things then gets destroyed by artillery. Meanwhile these Cold War era armored machines of warfare are cowering behind rocks and buildings because someone is looking right at them from a satellite.
Adding good TD's and bumping up artillery (if that goes through) will definitely be steps but artillery needs complete removal or complete removal and maybe an overhaul later after physics and Brit tanks.
They could always just heavily re-work artillery and turn them into TD's (remove overhead view, buff accuracy, nerf damage/AP pen). Because, let's face it, they aren't going to remove entire lines from the game.
The only problem I have with arty is that they are so deadly fucking accurate.
The only problem I have with arty is that they are so deadly fucking accurate.
My only problem with it is that their shells break tracks too easily.
If I had my way I would make it so that artillery wouldn't have the orbital death strike overview and would be inaccurate, but powerful support guns.
Plus I wouldn't even want to imagine the shit storm that the WoT Community forums would turn into if Wargaming actually did remove artillery or made it less accurate or powerful since I've seen personally how many of it's members defend it like it's their way of life.
Another thing that would do much to nerf artillery is the removal of tracers since it allows them to trace targets firing from camouflaged positions.
Got myself a A-20, thinking I might have fun.
Now I get destroyed twice as common.

That's another problem I have with this game is the location of the some of the Tier IV scouting tanks on the tech tree. Because it force you to grind through tanks like the A-20, and Pz38NA to get the T-34 and PzIV, and those tanks have completely different play styles than the A-20/Pz38NA it's one of the main reasons why a lot people oppose Wargayming's idea that Tier IVs light should be scouts in higher tier games.

Another thing is that I got one of the SPG heaven maps
Tried to shoot at a Tier 6 I think, a second later around 5 SPG's are firing on me.
Well, as a light player, I do my best to keep the number of artillery players low by making their life a living hell. Sadly, it is a uphill battle. Tier 8 lights cannot come fast enough for me.

My excitement is low due to repair cost.

Anyone here use tank destroyers? I could use some tips/mentoring.

1. Don't bother with Russian ones.

Depends which ones you're using.
Anyone here use tank destroyers? I could use some tips/mentoring.
buy jagdpz iv
use speed to manoeuvre around enemy mediums and heavies
AP rounds will often get through the turret front, particularly with the later guns, so dont be afraid to fire at the front
jagdpz usually has enough pen power to get through most tanks and damage them severely, ramming enemies usually also does good damage
consider buying premium to get the dicker max, follow similar strat
it has lower pen power though so careful

The devs have said that one reason the tier 5 lights have such a low level of income, is because they are the end of the line. I remember a while back one moderator/developer hinted at the fact that if there were higher tier lights added, the currents ones would see a change to their income.
Oh and look at that, MM royally screwed up.

My way of playing tank destroyers is going full on assault td.
This works especially well with low profile tank destroyers or well armored destroyers.
Though to start with I suggest you stick behind bushes and behind heavies, not too far away that you are staying back with arty though, in general find the flank that needs defending and stay there.
The T82 is AMAZING.
got 7 kills in the first match with it.

If you're using American TD's, keep in mind that tier 2-4 ones are made of paper.
You know, I'm starting to get used to the JagdPz IV. I almost don't want to sell it for the JagdPanther. I mean, it's not great, but it does surprisingly well now that matchmaking's been mostly fixed, and it's fun to use nonetheless.

Wow I didn't even think of that. The Jagdpanzer IV might not suck due to the new MM... damn why did I grind it months ago? That grind sucked HARD

It's actually not that bad, I'm getting plenty of penetrations and destructions now that the tanks I'm facing aren't meant to be defended against destroyers two or three tiers higher than I am. Managed to take out a few heavies in recent games, although I'm still only getting 200-80xp per game. Still, it brings a nice income, the camo netting was worth it to let me keep a position, and the general power of it lets me do damage versus most heavies and all mediums.
Wow I didn't even think of that. The Jagdpanzer IV might not suck due to the new MM... damn why did I grind it months ago? That grind sucked HARD
I had to do my Jagdpanzer IV grind during the Type 59 plague when there was literally swarms of the damn things in almost every match I was in with the JpzIV which made the grind to get out of it a absolute hell. I was out of my mind happy when I finally sold the damn thing for the Jagdpanther which was one of the most enjoyable grinds I've actually ever had in this game so far. But don't get me wrong, the little metal twinkie had it's moments of awesomeness, although they were quite rare.
But all that shit was before MM 2.0 came out and I've actually been tempted to buy the damn thing again to see how it performs now that the Matchmaker has been finally been improved. But I rather concentrate on getting my Ferdinand upgraded right now before I even think about getting a new tank below Tier IV and tell you guys the truth, the future of the Ferdi is not looking so bright with the addition of all the new Tier 10 TDs and Mediums that have absolutely no trouble penetrating it's frontal armor.
Anyone here use tank destroyers? I could use some tips/mentoring.
Camo net can be a real life saver. If you ever consider getting equipment, it should be that one before anything else.

I would also prefer the Binocular Telescope since it improves your line of sight and allows you to fire from greater distances without having a scout, another good piece of equipment would either be the gun rammer that decreases the time it takes to reload or the enhanced gun laying drive that decreases the time it takes to zero in on a target, and another suggestion of mine would be the spall liner since it decreases the damage done by ramming attacks(which is one of the TD's greatest enemies) and HE rounds. But if you're going down the German TD line don't bother using camo nets on the larger tanks like the Ferdinand, Jagdtiger, and E-100 TD since they have next to none when it comes to camouflage value(This may or may not apply to the larger TDs of the other lines).
Whenever possible, AVOID close-quarters engagements unless you have a turret and good aim because you won't stand a chance unless you have teammates close by(but due to the nature of the game's community your teammates may or may not stay close). Tank Destroyers are meant to be snipers unless they have a derp gun like the 10,5cm on the Hetzer and StuG III which can do heavy damage with HE rounds. But besides those stick with AP rounds and stay at a distance.
Also be sure to relocate if there is SPGs(Aka artillery) in the game because Tank Destroyers tend to be those thing's favorite targets and they can follow your tracers very easily even if you haven't been spotted by one of their teammates yet, samething applies with other TDs and tanks. And if you see a scouting tank(AMX 12t, ELC AMX, AMX 13, Leopard, VK 2801,Pz38NA, T-50, T-50-2, A-20, Chaffee, M5 Stuart, and any fast-moving mediums like the Batchat) take it out ASAP by aiming where it's going to be because if it sees you or any of teammates(primarily your artillery) so will any enemy tank that will be watching including their artillery.
Good parts of an enemy tank to hit are usually the lower glacis armor(Defiantly with the E-50, E-75, King Tiger, Panther, and Panther II since that is where their transmissions are located at and if you hit those it temporarily immobilizes them and slows them down for the rest of the game and there is also a chance that it can cause the engine to catch fire and do additional damage if not killing it completely it) at the front, the sides(Mainly the tracks since it also temporarily immobilizes it and slows their turning speed), rear(Engine compartment and fuel tanks), or any weak spots that you know of.
For further information on the Tank destroyers for all nations I suggest looking at these and the pages for the individual tanks:

I also suggest looking at the Tankopedia on the official website as well since the above has no info on the new Tier 10 tanks:

Well that retarded smalturm was going anyway. They will probably remove the L/70 with it and buff the L/48 a bit.

That would make pz3/4 gameplay even better i guess.
Removing schmalturm + L/70 and buffing L/48 would be the best thing ever.
[editline]6th August 2012[/editline]
But knowing wargaming, they'll just reduce its health or something
It would be nice to drive the Panzer IV and look vaguely like a real Panzer IV and not a ridiculous contraption.
Should i sell my E-75 because i want to get to the E-50M i almost have the E-50 and i think the E-50M would be a better Tier 10 than the E-100 and the E-100 is not used in clan wars at all. We use more often Is-7s and Maus some American T10 heavys.
