Alright, when you have startet a settlement I should start to get tokens. Now, where do I find those?!
Servers are resetting a lot recently, but I made a video of something which is now gone

I think this game is going to have a significant impact on MMOs regardless if it does well or not.
The biggest problem of most MMOs is that you have to keep the players interested. You do that by either providing new content, or giving the players a goal that they can't fulfill in the short term.
Most MMOs resort to the latter, sending players on a wild goose chase to being more powerful. This results in an situation where players are rewarded by allowing them to become more powerful. The problem with this is that it is exactly the opposite of what makes for good game balance, and much of the effort put into MMOs is just to patch up the problems caused by this.
The problem with trying to do the former, constantly giving players new things to do, is that introducing new content to the player requires humans to make the content and that requires a lot of time and money, more than what most companies can afford to keep up on a regular basis.
In Love, that's where computers come in. Unlike humans, computers don't sleep, they don't need to get paid, and they don't mind doing repetative tasks.
What Love does differently is that it puts the computer in a position where it can provide the players with new tasks without requiring anywhere near the amount of human involvement that would be needed otherwise.
The "token" acts as an all-purpose goal for creating new tasks. Using this goal the game can then generate variety of scenarios around it.
While this seems limiting at first, when you think about it most quests in MMOs never get beyond this level of complexity to begin with, with nearly all of them boiling down to "fetch X" or "kill X", they just try really hard to hide it.
Rather than trying to create the illusion of additional complexity, the developer of Love acknowledges this and instead uses it as a way to create a system the game can use to assemble new tasks and challenges for the players without a human having to become involved each and every time.
This means that using the time and effort it would take for a developer of any other MMO to create one quests that the player will go through in about a half-hour, a developer of a Love-like MMO can introduce a whole new type of quest to the game that the game can then automatically make numerous variations of, which would automatically be introduced at random or depending on what has occured in-game, making the best possible use of the time and effort that developer has put in.
If it's too long to read, then basically I think if this guy can't make it work, then hopefully someone else will try it because MMOs really need something like this.
You take the words out of my mouth.
Also I just keep making video's of every settlement I worked on

This MMO is a will play in my book.
Are the servers down right now? I can't login.
And how do you make your own settlement?
I dont know, Im still waiting for my Code.

[editline]08:51PM[/editline]
Nevermind..
For those which created an account the last days, they need to make a new one, as the database has been taken a few days back. Just use the same voucher code!
Ok i tried to sit down and play today, what the fuck do you do haha, i got killed like 20 times then i found two building tokens, but i can't build them and i can't find a settlement anywhere
You build a city and wage war with the AI.
Anyway, the settlement on Atlanta 2 is amazing. It is located on a mesa above all the lands, we are still making a name but I found 2 tokens for it so far. I am widely accepted :D.
I also have the most kickass name ever: Miaplacion.

Whats your in game name, head to The Sebin Ice Shelf and I'll fine you.
I'm not on right now though.
Just checking in on this, and I'm glad it has made alpha since the last time I looked in on it.
Love is by far the game I've loved the most ever.
I don't play it constantly, I never do that with any game.. I switch between tons of them constantly.
But whenever I join Love and start finding the same people I've seen since start and starting to build a settlement together.. Seriously.
I friggin LOVE, Love.
I have never seen anyone being the slightest bit of rude, everyone helps out, everyone teaches the newcomers and everyone is working for the same cause, as a unit. It's pure Love.
Eventhough the game need more longterm goals for people to have, I will personally keep my subscription going, never seen anything like this and there probably never will be anything else like this.
Therefor I will always give Eskil my support. <3
Well I bought it, but can't register no accounts. A shame, but then again it IS an alpha! I'll try again tomorrow.
Have you re-downloaded the newest client? The link is the same as the older ones. www.quelsolaar.com/love_alpha.zip
What really caught me by surprise in this game was that in addition to the challenges presented by threats from the outside, the nature of the settlements meant that there was almost always something to do in the settlement itself.
I'm really liking the infrastructure system in this game. It seems like no matter how well you set things up, eventually you'll see room for improvement you didn't see before. As a result you're always trying to improve and optimize how everything runs.
By the way, Atlanta 2, in-game name is Sensal.
I'm starting to wonder where these names come from.

Eskil stated on the game's forum that all of the names are taken from celestial bodies. It's kind of smart if you think about it. :}
Oh, and i'm Heroic on the Forums/Wiki, and I used to be Chon on Atlanta1 until the server restarted.
I'm considering dropping the money on this... is it worth it?
I'm considering dropping the money on this... is it worth it?
If you're expecting any sort of guarentee of getting your money's worth, then wait for the finished game.
The game is really good even in its current state, but it's important to remember that it is incomplete. In all honesty there is no telling if it'll stay working tomorrow. It may run into game breaking bugs or features may stop working as it continues to develop. It can't even be considered a demo or trial since the final game may be very different from how the game is now.
To re-state what Eskil explains on his site, if you pay for the alpha you do so at your own risk.
If you have any doubts, then it is highly recommended wait for the finished game.
This game looks pretty shitty.. Whats the point of it?

I suppose. The donation to play the alpha isn't much though, and he deserves the money. I don't know.
I'll definitely be playing the finished game, however.

Does it need one?
From what I've seen so far, player ego is this game's worst enemy.
By far it seems that the biggest barrier to entry in this game is whether or not you can set your ego aside and be ok with the fact that all the goals in this game are made to serve the everyone in the settlement rather than just yourself.
Most players have self-serving behaviors that are don't work well in this game, because most other multiplayer games encourage those behaviors.
It seems that the most difficult aspect of introducing new players to this game is getting them to put away those purely self-serving behaviors.

I for one have never seen this.
But I am 100% sure it happends!
Seems to be a person in the Atlanta 2 server who enjoys covering entire settlements in trees. Sure hope Eskil implements some decent anti-griefing measures. Also, if you want a settlement to survive, don't surround it with max-height walls. This will only cause the AI to resort to using artillery to attack your base and causes them to constantly dig holes under your base. You will still need walls at least high enough to block sight of your tokens of course.
I'm curious as to how this works. So Players build settlements and the AI tries to destroy them? Do you kill the AI?
Yea, you kill the AI.
I'm curious as to how this works. So Players build settlements and the AI tries to destroy them? Do you kill the AI?
Basically, right now the player builds settlements, the AI builds settlements, and they attack/defend against each other.
There will be more put in as development continues, but that's mostly what there is for now. Even in that regard a lot of the mechanics don't work yet. Artillery and bombs for player settlements aren't functional at the moment so the balance heavily favors the AI right now. Most player settlements aren't lasting more than a few days right now. Our settlement in Atlanta 2 is pretty much screwed at the time of this post.
Again, I probably sound like a broken record by now, but if you have any doubts wait for the finished game. This is Alpha, as in not even far along enough to be Beta, as in well and truly unfinished game.
That being said, it's still a lot of fun even at this point.

Eskill has said that he's already trying to work out some way to deal with griefers.
Needing special priviledges to use tools is pretty much out of the question for this game, as that would defeat the point of the gameplay. I'm guessing it'll be some variation of vote-kick or something similar.
I thought the Mountain Fortress on Atlanta 2 was pretty safe.
How did that get destroyed?
The one with the lower bit and the higher bit, super high walls?
