Is there anything new and exciting since when the alpha first went live?
I bought this and neither me or my friends could figure it out. But it was pretty fun just walking around.
Also it's damn hard to find eachother.
Does anyone feel like updating the OP? I'm out of the loop with news and stuff about this game.
Does he say how much the monthly fee for the final product will be?
I, too, took the plunge and bought into the beta. Suffice to say, after half an hour of looking for a token and not finding one, being shot at by multiple AI enemies, and see a couple of figures that may well have been actual players, I just gave up and haven't played since. The visuals are nice and the concept seems solid, but the HUD is incredibly counter-intuitive, there are very few on-screen instructions (and even they were vague) and I still don't have a fucking clue what to do. How am I supposed to beta test this game if I don't know what I'm doing? I'm hoping for some serious progress in the near future, I really am.
The January 14th update changed it so that new players are now spawn into existing settlements, and if there are no existing settlements then you'll spawn with a Monolith token.
Hopefully it will make it easy to learn how to play from others and get rid of some of the "OMG! I'M LOST WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO!" syndrome.
(However, if you refuse to communicate with others then that can't be fixed)

Is that a fact. Why do you hope for it. It's good to meet someone who is LOST WHAT are you SUPPOSED TO DO. What kind of food do you like? I think I do.

I swear I always read your posts around 5 times before realising that it actually makes no sense.
I have a beta thingy.. its really fun :D
If anyone is interested, this is your last chance to get Love Beta vouchers for $5 before release, beta sign-ups will be closed on this tuesday.
From then until release no time will be deducted from active beta accounts. You'll get to keep any time you have left on your account until then.
The release will be on March 25 and after that it'll cost around $14.

What're the newest and best features? In the alpha it was quite boring.
Looks like a fucked up TF2 art style.
Cool.
I remain interested but refuse to pay for an open beta.
What're the newest and best features? In the alpha it was quite boring.
Off the top of my head:
-Teleport gun token has been added, essentially a 3-vote kick from the settlement.
-Art style is still the same, but now it's easier to tell tokens apart and each name now has a unique player model. AI of different settlements get different models as well.
-Armageddon. Massive flooding occurs occasionally up till just below the level of the Monolith. Severely impairs travel without dive-gear for a certain period of time.
-AI settlements now come in a few different color-coded types and carry different tokens and construct their settlements differently. (some contstruct them very high in the air, some are low to the ground, some have more forcefields, ect.)
-Weapon sounds as well as a few ambient sounds have been added.
-Health tokens now create a healing area that heals everyone nearby for a short amount of time.
-Cable pod tokens have been added. Cable pods create a temporary relay between where you fire the pod and where you are standing. Good for setting up a method of excape before you run into a pit or something you can't normally get out of.
-Several tool tokens have been added. Roofs can now be decorated to look like roofs and buildings with windows can be set up to look like buildings rather than random blocks coming out of the ground.
Also a whole bunch of other stuff I can't remember.
There are plenty of improvements, but the basic gameplay hasn't changed however.
If you absolutely didn't like the game in Alpha then I don't think there would much that would change that.
Imagine a Mass Effect MMO with space sort of like EVE and also markets and such, but with ground combat as well.
That's what I want.

What the hell does that have to do with anything?
I bought the beta when I had Windows Vista and now I upgraded to Windows 7 and it doesn't work anymore >:
That development video is nothing but incredible. It's like a miracle of programming.
What does the demo do? I tried it but it just seems to go in one direction and say Buy a voucher at <site name>.
I hate money greifs.. Like this guy, just make it so people can run their own servers..
Instead of forcing them to feed his little pocket with money..
HE COULD ATLEAST HAVE ADDED A SINGLEPLAYER VERSION MAAAN!
really doesn't look good at all.
Is this really worth to try?
I was pretty disappointed by this game actually. There is no way in hell it is worth $15 a month, it was barely worth the $3-5 for beta.
Aaw, and it looked so promising back in '08.
Oh man, this thread is nearly 2 years old. Time flies.

I can't agree more. I paid the $5 alpha fee to try it and I walked around for 2 days worth of time and never found a token to build. Never found any tokens. It fucking sucked ass.

I can understand if people don't like the game. It was going to be a niche title right from the start.
However, if anything this game is really piss poor at making money. Basically you have heavily server-side game that costs a lot per player to run that is expected to have a small playerbase. Not very good from a business standpoint.
Even at $15 a month this game is only expected to turn out about $3000 of profit a month, and that's only if it reaches the expected number of players at launch (based on the figures he posted on his blog).
That's about $36,000 a year in profit that doesn't get sucked up by the game right off the bat. That's pretty much has to cover his living expenses and the cost of continuing the game's development.
That's not even counting money that has already been spent on the game's development, which definitely won't be paid off for at least a couple more years.
Charging lower to get more players?
Unfortunately, doesn't scale well at all. In order to make the same amount of money on $7 a month for example, the game would have to somehow triple its expected number of players. This game isn't exactly mainstream to begin with there's not much chance of that happening.
From a financial perspective, this game sucks ass. It only works because he doesn't have a staff to pay.
However, I DO AGREE with you that he should at least allow the option of allowing peopel to run their own servers, but unless the game suddenly became very well optimized server-side I kind of doubt there would be many takers here.

I would not recommend getting into the game right now.
It's only a few days until release and the beta sign ups are supposed to be closed.
You're better of waiting for release and then find someone with an existing account.
Each account has a "friend" account that goes with it that can log in as long as they're in-game. Find someone with an existing account then ask them to lend you their "friend" account so you can try the game first without paying anything (you can find people on the gaminglove.net forums who would be more than happy to do so).
Otherwise you might end end up paying for a game you might not have wanted to begin with.
This is an amazing game that I've been trying to promote lately. In fact, I was about to post a thread when I saw this. I suggest EVERYONE to try it. It's worth the 10 dollars/euros a month that you have to spend.
Edit: Paul1290; that is incorrect. You can no longer get a voucher.
Btw, will the friend account system go over into the main game?

If you have any suggestions on how to update the OP to better reflect the game in its current state, PM this account and I'll update it.

A list of interviews with Eskil.

Most recent interview directly from the gaming love community.
Speaking of which, the www.gaminglove.net would be a good thing to add. It is the directory for the forums, wiki, and Quel Solaar site (the love main site).
Edit: Oh and add the price of the subscription. (No base cost; ~14 USD/month, 10 Euros/month)
Has he added any features since the extremely basic alpha/beta that was first released to the public?
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
