An example of this would be FPS players; most people I know who play FPS games think that any game that's not about war or guns will instantly suck and it not worth playing. But their "favorite" games are almost always the ones they complain about most. If people camping in areas is so bad, then why don't you play a different game?

sounds like all the cod fags I know
cod use to be cool, now all the newfags think it's sooooo awesome and they talk with words like ''dominating'' and all the typical internet slang in real life.
I hate my best friend, because he is a Halo fan (Has only played the first one) and hates Half-Life 2 and everything made by VALVe. And Steam. And guess what. He hasn't even played one of their games. Ever.
I'm pretty sure he doesn't hate everything made by Valve. Also, Halo 1 was a really good game, Halo 2 was... meh.
The way technology's power has increased recently, if a game comes out that has amazing graphics but shitty gameplay, people will buy it. If you make a game with not-good-but-not-bad graphics but fucking amazing gameplay, it will not sell well.
It's not that we've forgotten how to enjoy games, companies have forgotten how to make enjoyable games.
Amen.
Every game that you bought on the N64/PS1/Dreamcast/PC were simply enjoyable. Hell, even games that received a 50% and higher in the last gen(Gamecube/Xbox/PS2) were fun to play with because it had huge variety and you can play with your friends on a couch instead of online.
My friends and I had fun with SSX 3 and NBA street.
Agree, too many FPSs. Why did people almost halted at making 3rd person video games? We all love them!
Kane and Lynch was awesome! And I don't really like 3rd person shooters that much.
we have all turned into our grandfathers.

See: Section 8. It's really unfortunate that people expect all games to look like real life or something, now.
It's the progression of a mind and the media. When I was smaller playing a game as a princess rescuing PLumber or a Hedgehog spiraling out of control, I didn't give two seconds to think of a plot. It was pure enjoyment of just having something to interact with and actively be apart of. Then I aged, along with games and the plots got deeper, the developers got larger and now it's a ton of man power and thought. The days of the "just because" video games are kind of jaded, and the more comfortable us modern gamers get with a bit more substance in our games seems to make a little less serious titles feel iffy and unsatisfying. We just became pampered. But the technology is growing so much everyday and really starting to allow a larger room for indie developers to get in there and make something happen which is awesome. But who knows, that's just my lame ass thoughts.

PAH! i have my old Sega Megadrive at my side. It's dusty, it's creaky, it's old but it contains a priceless amount of memories that not even photo realistic graphics can outdo.
After playing gta4 I have a hard time not having euphoria in other games.

That's a nostalgia, not a good game.
No, developers are just focusing on being all fancy shmancy rather than coming out with creative titles.
I just want an RPG where I can choose my race and my class and go fight hordes of zombies and skeletons with a vast array of unique and powerful spells and abilities. I want the armor to look cool, not ridiculous, but cool, and I want the NPCs to shut the fuck up and get out of my way and let me cleave some goblin skulls.
I don't want an annoying contrived plot about redemption and salvation and a bunch of poorly written characters I don't give a fuck about, I don't want to spend my time doing chores for some flat, boring pillock who spends his time in a fortress on a mountain doing jack shit. I want to be the hero, I want to smash the bad guy, I want to be the ruler of all time and space.
I don't want a giant over world that's however many kilometers but is just filled with a bunch of copy pasted trees, I don't want a bunch of towns that have nothing in them.
I want one big town, one small, yet well designed sandbox world, a bunch of spells that are unique and interesting to play with, a story where I'm the fucking hero and not just assistant to the hero, and a buncha fucking zombies. Is that so much to ask for?

Sonic 1, 2, 3&knuckles.
I suppose it's realism we have come to hate.
Yes a game may have realistic glass shatter physics or pinpoint accurate organ simulation but sometimes this is not fun.
Case in point Saints Row Two, sure the story may not have been much but it's fun factor if off the charts.
To quote yhatzee on this one "In any game if you give players a character customisation option and sandbox environment the first thing they will do is strip down and flash their goods of at old ladies. Not only does Saints Row let you do this but it's also keeping score."
Sometimes utter silliness is what games want, whilst still not being part of this causal game crap.
Just Cause 2
Saints Row 2
Fallout 3
Team Fortress 2
Some people complain of seqeulitus but these games are posibly some of the best sequels ever to grace any series.
and none of them contain much realism at all.
Ok Fallout 3 isn't similar to the other two but it's still pretty good.
It's funny that everyone mentions Just cause 2, because Mercenaries 2 was the exact same thing minus the chute. The only difference was that Mercenaries was never a big title and Just cause is. And that's how we ended up with 1 developer less.
You guys reminded me of medal of honor allied assault.Same textures and guns all over but the single player was amazingly fun.Today is all about graphics and physics and such.Don't you guys miss the good old "simple" games?

I do miss the old games.. I remember playing the first 3D Harry Potter and the -I_don't_know_what- Stone... I used to play it for hours trying to beat those damn little creatures...
"Hey, have you played Fallout 1?"
"The graphics suck. The game sucks."
"Hey have you ever played Half-Life?"
"The graphics suck. The game sucks."
"What about Half-Life 2?
"The graphics suck. The game sucks."
"Hey have you ever played Team Fortress 2?"
"The graphics suck. The game sucks."
That is what I hear all the time.
If you want a good game, play something made by Valve or Civilization 4.
Yes, because there aren't any other decent games out there.
At all.
NONE.
I play my games when I play my games, but it seems like alot of my friends lacks gaming "spirit".

Too bad I have lost my C64. That is how I started gaming.
Games seem to have changed quite a bit, people only seem to care about graphics recently.

I still like the original better.
Games companies need to stop focusing on graphics and those sparkling things and also multiplayer.
I really want to see a triumphant return of multiplayer games. Online multiplayer these days feels like playing against trash talking, intelligent bots who occasionally cheat, and infuriate you.
REAL multiplayer is sitting with friends, laughing and having a good time together.
Ask yourself: If you played multiplayer Goldeneye or Timesplitters, or even Mario Kart, which did you have more fond memories? Modern Warfare 2 or Bad Company 2's extravagant 32 player battles with loads going on, or those classic moments on the sofa with your mates?
That's the reason why, despite my friends owning the latest games, we still often retire to a good old fashioned game of Goldeneye on the N64.
So few games these days even have split screen competitive multiplayer, let alone cater to an entire co-op campaign.
[editline]03:51PM[/editline]
I think eventually we'll reach photorealism, and not be really able to progress beyond that graphically. When that happens, the focus will shift to gameplay, and we'll enter a gaming Renaissance, where gameplay and artistic style is finally valued over graphics.

Team fortress 2, i play on the FP server and there are moments where it's a total ceasefire, and everyone sits back and do crazy shit.

Holy shit me too man.I loved that game.
As soon as you said Goldeneye I had a flash back to the good times. But there is not going to be much change in multiplayer. The Games industry is to big and mostly focusing on pick the gun up and blast everthing in sight.
You're asking why people are complaining. Not even God has an answer for that.
Let's not turn this into a religious debate...
I think the culture we live in has something to do with our cynicism. Most young people do blindly accept any game, despite its flaws, and see the good parts. At least they used to. Now they only blindly accept the most popular games that are only popular because they are so popular. A feedback loop.
The flipside of this blind acceptance is us. Most FPers will talk like an snobs' dog about anything that's popular and mainstream. Modern Warfare 2 is an obvious example, but think about other cultural aspects.
Anime is a good example. Anime is almost universally hated by those on facepunch, and even those who like it will hide that fact. The fact of it is that not all anime is the same as is perceived by these zealots. Same with thing with furry art. Not everyone who draws anthropomorphic animals is a furry. Is Walt Disney a furry for drawing Road Runner and Wile E Coyote? No, of course not, but it's become culturally cool to either love or hate furries, just like it has become culturally cool to love or hate anime, and just like it has become culturally cool to either love or criticise video games.
The more you try and break away from the pack by saying "This thing that you like is awful" the more you are conforming to the opposite party. It seems that it is impossible for us to simply accept something, and be indifferent. Instead we must either hate or love it, and for this reason I think that we can't enjoy video games.
:siren:TL;DR:siren:
We are either part of a herd of sheep, who blindly follow what we perceive as popularity, or a huge pack of wolves, who snarkily oppose and criticize anything that the sheep like. Nobody is in the middle.

Think about it, would you REALLY want a game to look like real life? I know that I don't. If I wanted something that looked like it was honest-to-God real, I would go out and do shit, but I want to playvideo games, I don't want it to look like real life.
