Think about it, would you REALLY want a game to look like real life? I know that I don't. If I wanted something that looked like it was honest-to-God real, I would go out and do shit, but I want to playvideo games, I don't want it to look like real life.
I disagree. Think about a game like Half-life 2. If that looked like real life, it would still be fantasy due to its sci-fi story. Likewise, if you watch a movie like the Dark Knight, that doesn't mean you want to go and do it, despite it looking entirely real, and you wouldn't want any of those events like bombs, explosions, death and misery, to actually happen, but you're still intrigued by the idea of it happening

i'd rather want different art directions than "virtual reality"

I think the whole "Virtual Reality" art direction is going to be most popular, just like it is in films. People think it tends to add some credibility

Yeah fuck that, I want games I can play and forget they aren't movies. (Until something unrealistic pops into view and slaps me in the face.)
/Heavy Rain
Most cases alternate art styles is an excuse because you can't do photorealism. There are exceptions, but most alternate art styles are bred from the lack of capability.

I have to admit, it can work rather well sometimes though.
Psychonauts
Mirror's Edge
Borderlands.
They had very deliberate styles that worked well for the gameplay they were trying to achieve.
Games seem to have changed quite a bit, people only seem to care about graphics recently.

unreal tournament.. such a classic.
Each game has its negative quirks about them, but I try to stay positive when I play, that way even if the game is terrible I still enjoy it.

well, i am of the believe that artstyles are more than a deviation from attempting reality. TF2 has a special artstyle and it's one of the biggest parts of what makes it so damn fantastic...
6 years after release, this will be played to death while those who attempt realism are often forgotten when a more realistic choice is ready. if i want realism, i'll go down on the street and start firing at individuals untill i think i have enough frags. (no, not really) i could care less for REAL graphics as long as they're pretty and an improvement of what came before. TF2 is not realistic, but it's crispy, beautifull and believable and that's what games of the future will succeed on because the unrealistic feel just goes further. HL2 was realistic... now it's just low rez, bland and boring, 6 years later. i'm willing to bet that TF2s art will still be interesting 6 years after release.
(i'm not some Valve exclusive gamer, it was just using what i thought of)
it is also why sonic and mario are both timeless classics along with Link. in the period 19xx-2005, ANY game that attempted the photorealistic look felt blocky, bland and empty while over the top, colorful, "who gives a shit" games took the cake.

it was always the safer choice in the past... people are going to be toying more with remakes of real life now that the technology seems up for it... we're going to be seeing a motherload of artistically boring games in the next few years.
