Should definitely give him a shiny Persian silk shirt.
You can post samples in the thread and we'll listen to them, but we don't have any specific spots open that I'm aware of.
Not even a ground-shatteringly deep trailer voice? :v:
Not even a ground-shatteringly deep trailer voice? :v:
I've had enough experience with voice actors to know that you NEVER make promises before you've heard samples. It's like writing, one of those things that everyone thinks they can do but very few can do well. [editline]10:20PM[/editline]
I've read through the wiki, I've just noticed it seems to me like there's a very police state-esque environment (given the posters and that) and that element of the story could really be elaborated on through subtle details in the game world itself. Including but not limited to, what the characters wear, ingame propaganda, etc... On an unrelated topic, who does one refer to upon interest in voice acting?
There's no all-powerful police state. Jaanus's level wasn't canonical story material, just for jokes and testing. There will be a bunch of planets: New New York: Like the real city, largely free but somewhat corrupt Kazzin: Anarcho-capitalist paradise/nightmare Laituur: British colony world with primitive natives Haru: Brutally fundamentalist theocracy and others!

For New New York, what sort of voice acting are you looking for? More of a Jersey Accent or a Boston accent. If I can get my mic working I could give some sample lines a go.

"Mods" -- even ones with potential such as this and/or even ones like Dear Esther -- do not attract professional actors (and even if they did, those actors would more than likely require recording equipment and/or environments). Mods acquire amateurs and hobbyists. Hobbyists tend to stick to the same projects until they are done and amateurs often get bored. There's not a lot of voice actors who do voice acting for a hobby. What you get is a very thin line of talent; you get the amateurs who get all excited about working with the project who MAY QUITE POSSIBLY BE TALENTED but either A: do not have the appropriate equipment or B: later get bored and abandon the project, thus leaving a gap... and then there are the professionals (or at least people with prior experience) who are close to nonexistent. This applies to a lot of roles, whether it being a coder or modeler or texture artist or mapper (a lot of the latter ones being in both high demand AND a lot of individuals can learn with relative ease). Models and textures and maps can be pumped out quickly and so can voices -- the problem is that most are placeholders. You can say that "this model is a placeholder" or that "this map is temporary" but when someone hears a voice, they expect that to be a permanent representation. Voices are the last thing you would want -- at least for major roles Talked to some devs at Valve and they have the problem of creating a temporary voice for Wheatley which was later used for the Meet Wheatley trailer. The problem was that, originally, his voice was supposed to be nothing like that. If they change it now it will stir up a lot of commotion because now that the character has been presented with that type of voice and personality, it is expected to be the same. LONG STORY SHORT: voice roles shouldn't even exist until progress is made and the game hits alpha stage edit: oh also scratch dear esther i was thinking of something else

Needs more horribly buggy textures to be truly Effective en Masse. Looks like he's in front of a campfire.

I like what i'm hearing though. If you could perhaps PM me some lines to sample i'd be more than happy to post them.
We don't really have any lines to sample, it's better if you just make some stuff up--the way I prefer to work is to have the general gist of a line and improvise variations. When a VA records a line verbatim that was written by someone else, it tends to come out awkwardly. Especially in a dialogue-heavy mod like this, spontaeity and funniness is at least as important as timbre and fidelity.

Playing as a character that you have no talent or purpose of playing does not work, and as TH89 said, comes out really awkward even when you rehearse your role time and time again. Iron Man, for example, had the storyboard and that was IT. The actors were pretty much told to "act like ____" and to follow the storyboard with little to no scriptwriting in between. What do you expect the mobsters in New New York to sound like? What would their lingual style be like? Do they behave like thugs or act more mature and self-controlled? Are they mysterious or are they spontaneous? You decide and then you act based upon your instincts. If you can't create a persona or set of personas based on what you feel and are capable of then you aren't really acting; you're just pretending. If you can come up with random things and interact with other actors and still make a compelling, funny event that's WORTH watching then that means you have the right stuff. If you aren't capable of improvising then you need to take some classes or sit in a padded room until you are capable.

Can I spawn him with console as an NPC or a model?
Not as of yet, no. And his skin is still a major WIP.
I spent like 30 minutes last night just firing the johnny gun into walls. It's way too much fun.

Also Solomons personality is a cross between Max Payne and JC Denton.
Hard boiled, in other words.
Also Solomons personality is a cross between Max Payne and JC Denton.
That better means some philosophical discussions about how people want to be in center of attention all the time.
