You must come up with an awesome paintjob (possibly of the ice cream variety) for the Winning Smile, since the old one looked like a shark that had been out in the sun too long. Can anyone find that one clip of the Firefly flying through the orbiting Reavers in Serenity? All I can find is the scene right after that in SD. I think it would be a great reference for the pirate ships above and such, I'll just leave the scene after it right here. They're shit quality and all but I think you can get a decent idea. The manufacturer paints it all according to which plates go where, someone who wants to stand out and signify that they are different doesn't follow these patterns (unless you are autistic). Other than that though, space is dark and anything you paint on it will come out dark.
