Merchanting clans are retarded and just generally one giant scam.
They pick an item, tell everyone to buy it so that the supply of it basically dies while the demand keeps growing (And therefore the price keeps growing). The clan leaders/ranks usually tell you when to dump the item BUT they dump it waaaay before you do, therefore they make a shit-ton of $$$ but you don't get shit.
tl;dr don't join merchanting clans
