To get portal 2 working as a fake game do this
Find a game that has an steam_appid.txt in the game folder
I use this C:\Windows.old\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\super meat boy
Change the appid to 659 and save it, then run the EXE in the folder. Not from steam.

Nah, just use Left 4 Dead, then host a game. Unfortunately it won't find normal games because of the app trick.

He just told you. Join a server. Steam just says what game you're playing. Nothing is checked.
