I make $32,000 a year, and I think it's stupid to pay $60 for a game.

Correct.
since when is bandwidth and server upkeep free?
Since when does it cost more to run servers for australians? Since when do EA pay for Valve's content servers?
Jesus fuck, 60 dollars is cheap for us Australians.
Whinge more, we pay 100 dollars bare minimum for any decent game.
It's true.
Sometimes $110 or $120.
The extra money isn't for the distribution prices. The price of living (food, gas, clothes) continually rises, so game companies have to pay their employees more. In order to make a profit off their games, they have to sell their games for a higher cost (or so they think).
Right, I forgot that this was specific to Australia.
Didnt the dollar drop a metric fuckton in value
Out of curiosity, what do other things cost in Australia and New Zealand? Like what are houses selling for, what is an average salary, etc?
The average in Australia, depending on state, is $35k (Tasmania) to $75k (ACT), with NSW, Victoria and the like being around the $55k mark.
Median house prices in Melbourne (and the surrounding area) are ~600k.
The minimum wage is $32k, compared the US's ~16k.
So you pay more, but you earn more. There's also a greater distribution of wealth than the US.
What some people are saying about inflation in this thread is true, as well.
$40 in 2000 is equal to about $55 now, assuming an inflation of 3% per year. The problem is that, in the United States (due to the GFC) especially, average wages don't rise at the same rate.
Didnt the dollar drop a metric fuckton in value
It's more that other currencies, Australia especially (now virtually 1:1 with the US dollar), continued to rise whilst America was bailing out major industries. So $100 might have been more expensive 5 years ago, it was only $20 more expensive, as opposed to $40 now.

Sorry I go to college and the extra $10 can add up quickly (not that I buy games / full priced games often).
Oh and I don't own a smartphone or a car, I know that shit can add up quickly (well a car is a bit of a necessity is some cases but not where I live).

I think inflation would be a viable excuse if games cost the same to make, but if anything they're getting cheaper to.
but if anything they're getting cheaper to.
So? Value of a dollar always gets lower.
It has always been $60/$70 for me?
Maybe Canadians are just special.
Look at it from EA's point of view.
You bitches all bent over for Activision and let them have their way with you, even though Black Ops is one of the most boring games of the year, so EA thought, well why should we offer a better experience for less? They saw a chance to make more money and jumped on the idea. I can't really blame them either, Activision have been doing this for way longer.
Piracy tax. Since apparently 99% of PC owners pirate games, they gotta charge more to be able to cover production costs and such from the 1% that actually buy the game.
Seriously though, since things like food, transportation and such are getting more expensive, it was only a matter of time before games, regardless of platform, went up in price.
I'd say it costs alot, specially since your gonna be multiplying the Trucks by loads, the boats by loads and the planes, since they aren't traveling to 1 country.
Your a fuckin idiot, like they're gonna fill a whole fuckin ship with just games, and games are sold in multiple countries too.

To be honest, if you're in college and $10 is that important to you, you have much better things that money could go towards.
I need to ask, why are games in Australia so expensive? Is your corrupt government forcing publishers to put high prices to deter people from buying INSIDIOUS TERRORIST TRAINING SIMULATORS DESIGNED FOR CHILDREN.

two cents
wahhhh im going to accuse a company of being greedy
thats the entire point of a company. they make money. their goal is to price things as high as possible while still getting people to buy it. and you know youll buy it, because its ridiculous to skip a good game based on that precious 10 dollars of your allowance.
get over yourself, its basic business
They are compensating for piracy.
But they are doing it wrong.
All pc games should be 50% of the price of what they are now.

yes i think games should be $30 all of them because the people that pirate games simply cannot afford the $30 difference and thereby making the game $30 nobody will pirate the gamesbecause they are soo cheap!!

No. I was suggesting 5 euro actually. Cause then most people can buy their games. Even 10 year olds.

Not according to Gabe's marketing model. They gain a ton of revenue when their games go on sale. Obviously it wouldn't be that cheap during the start, but once or twice for a quick money grab.

Then why would Portal 2 be the most expensive PC game I have bought in the last few months? Crysis 2, Bad Company 2, Just Cause 2, Batman Arkhum Asylum, tons of indie games, Left4Dead 1 and 2 all where considerably cheaper than Portal 2. They are obviously following the bandwagon too and I bought all of them (except for some of the indie games) when they were still full price.

Granted most of us on FP have at least one pirated game but I seriously doubt 99% of PC gamers are using pirated software

Compensating for piracy ? They are stealing retail copies now ? Oh god, what an horrible world we live on!
Again, one downloaded copy does not equal to one lost sale, the market is smaller, yes but what's the logic behind rising the prices on digital copies ? the cost of those is very cheap and even meaningless compared to the profit, yet EA has cheaper retail than digital for some odd reason.
Also the console versions are also priced at 60 dollars, this has nothing to do with inflation.
New PC games in Russia are about 35$ retail, but console games are 100$.

Console games are ≈3000 RU? Wow, sucks to be russian console gamer.
On the other hand, who cares about consoles and PC games from publishers like 1C, Akella and Buka tends to be reasonably cheap.
