Expansion packs should come back; they were so much more than DLC ever will be.
The market has shifted from single player based games to multiplayer. Expansion packs used to be released to increase multiplayer with things like maps.
I remember going to Gamecrazy and buying disc to install maps for Halo 2 on my hard drive, on the little packet that came with it it said "MULTIPLAYER EXPANSION"
A few months later the maps were converted to DLC when the xbox first allowed people to download content from them.
Too bad no one does that anymore. You have to pay for everything, no matter what it is. Look at the Stimulus package. 5 maps 15 euros... Same with the new upcoming DLC...
Hell, Mw1 had a free map pack for fuck sakes... Acivision fucked everything in the ass
As I said in my post on the front page, a major reason for costly DLC is the fact that Microsoft FORCES companies to put a price tag on their DLC (with a few rare exceptions of course).
I honestly don't mind DLC, for the most part. I bought every single Fallout 3 expansion. As was said before about the GOTY edition; patience is always rewarded to those who wait. For the rest of us who jump on the bandwagon as soon as possible, we tend to get the short end of the stick, financially. Besides, you can also argue that these are for the people who don't have Live (I didn't, for the longest time).
It's that way with everything. Say you buy every CD of an artist as soon as they are released. Then, a few months later, they release a Greatest Hits and it has all of your favorite songs from that band for cheaper. Or when movie trilogies and such come out in package deals. It's not just the video game industry that does this, and that's just the way it is.
Personally, I don't like when games withhold the ending or an important story element and make you get DLC for it. That's a bit of a dick move.
