I assume it was alwatys an attachment, maybe a covering - maybe it had expensive exposed parts which the UNSC Pillar of Autumn took coverings to protect in extreme climates.
And the rifle has no backup iron sights which makes no sense.
But if the ammo counter + electonics package is removable then the iron sights could be under it.

Yes, but what if the HUD breaks? They still use nuclear weapons which cause EMP.
Or what if it's a long campaign and you run out of power? Anything could happen. That's why it's pretty stupid.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure Halo 1 was the only game where the marines had eyepieces.

I thought people brought this up that when you detach the ammo counter there's a backup ironsight underneath it.

At least in Halo 1 (the one that I've played the most and thus remember the gun models perfectly) in the M6D does have iron sights. The two yellow dots on the back are the back sights, but the front sight is covered by that weird attachment thing the M6G also has. Always wondered what it is, probably some sort of laser sight.

Nailed it, yeah its a smart linked scope.
The M6C had iron sights, and has to be my favorite of the M6s variants I love its high rate of fire, duel weilding it also made me feel like a badass.
