They look like Spartans assimilated while still inside the armor, which is fine by me.
Those are supposed to be Spartans? Is this a joke?
Those are supposed to be Spartans? Is this a joke?
can't you see they're wearing armour? Yes they're Spartans, infected by the flood.
can't you see they're wearing armour? Yes they're Spartans, infected by the flood.
Obviously I can see the armor, I'm not blind. That is Spartan armor. But those in no way look like actual Spartans. It's looks like some Lobster/Crab alien stole the armor and then got infected by the flood. Nothing about them even looks feasibly human except for the one hand/finger nails.
It looks to me that 343 got lazy on the Flood models, since it's obviously not something they would want to focus much of their time on.
they flood mutate the body, you can tell they're human. They grow new parts, pieces, etc.
It is what they've always done.
Tuskin's right. In Halo 1, the Marine flood were...well, visibly Marines, but not human. When you're trying to mutate someone's body inside a sealed super-suit, odds are the mutation is going to mold to the suit, which happens to look like a human. They look about how a Flood infected Spartan should look- still noticeably human, but, not, at the same time.

Though, yes, they do look a bit like Crab People.
It still looks like something out of Doom, and not the flood.

Those look nothing like the Flood. I know what they're supposed to look like; I've played 3 games full of them.
Please tell me how

It looks very flood-like to me. Besides, you guys seem so surprised, the game has a revamped art-style :v:

You can see infection form tendrils in the rib cage, and the color of the growth in addition to the fact that they've got pincer arms just kinda screams Flood to me.
As cool as it is, they don't really look like flood to me.
That's what I said about Halo 2's flood when it came out. "there's not enough green and yellow, what's all this red weedy shit?" Then Halo 3's flood when it came out. "This all looks way to fucking compact, it looks like they were deformed from birth and comfortable grew into this form over years instead of being violently repurposed on the field." And then there was Halo Wars which tried to mix Halo 3's sleek flood and Halo 1's flood color scheme and it just didn't work. I gave it the benefit of the doubt because it wasn't from the original guys. Then other things started happening. I looked back and noticed how when ever something got adapted, I didn't like something visually. ADI's Xenomorph designs in Alien Ressurection and AVP disgusted me because they weren't Giger's. Doom 3's monster designs seemed dumb to me for no reason other than they didn't look enough like their old sprite counterparts. I noticed this pattern, and got sick of my own bullshit.
I encourage these drastic changes. This isn't Bungie's Halo. This is the same IP, yes, but it's being executed by different artists, engineers, and even fucking caterers. Shit is gonna look, feel, and sound different. If it doesn't, something is going horribly wrong. That's a huge team of incredible talent wasting all of their time trying to completely emulate 100% of what came before. All the complaints I've ever read about this game's visual style is that it's not close enough to what came before. Guess fucking what? It's not what came before, it won't be what came before, and it can't be what came before.
If it seems like I'm raging, it's because it's not just this one occasion, or Halo alone. Every fucking adaptation or sequel I see prompts at least one fucknut to bitch that something isn't visually accurate enough, or one detail is missing. Guess what? NO artist, be it a sculptor, painter, modeler, or even musician wants to retread old paths step for step. They sought out their jobs because they're good at making shit up and taking shit that already existed and injecting their own interests and past experiences into it. That's why they do what they do, and that's what they get hired to do. Any second grader can slap a bunch of fleshy tentacles onto a spartan action figure's arm and call it an original flood spartan design, and it has been done a ridiculous amount of times. All of us here have probably seen a few. Why the hell would these paid professionals do that? Why NOT redesign the flood to fit the new pallet of colors and shapes that have already been established for the new game? Why NOT take the stupid ass red belt off of Superman's stupid ass costume? Why NOT streamline the color pattern on Spider Man's suit to make it more believable that a teenager secretly stitched it together in his room? Why not make Wolverine's suit look more like a military uniform as long as his hair emulates the classic animal-ear shape he's known for? Why not cast a black guy to play Kingpin, especially when he's fucking awesome and turned out to be the only good part of that fucking movie (rip MCD)? You know why they change these things? Because they fucking care. They love the property too much to NOT do their job.
I know this was unprovoked, and I'm really sorry about this rant, but it's been building up in me for years. If I didn't get this off my chest, I will probably ended up hitting someone in the future. Probably when Halo 5 is coming out and the flood don't look enough like the Halo 4 flood.
admittedly I'm a bit puzzled by the lack of exposed infection form sensory antennae. They...they kinda do need that.
I mean, just look at this.
[img_thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/flood1.jpg[/img_thumb]
[img_thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/flood2.jpg[/img_thumb]
[img_thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/flood3.jpg[/img_thumb]
All three have very similar features, and none of them are present on the Spartan flood form.
The head of the host is no longer useful, so it is pushed aside (In the brute's case, it is split apart), and is replaced with an orifice with the red tipped sensory tentacles growing from it.
The left hand of the host is re-purposed into a powerful melee weapon composed of whip-like tentacles, no crab claws.
Neither of these a present on the new spartan infected. Its not just a matter of art style here, this is the way Flood biology works. There were plenty of changes in the Flood's design from Halo 1 to 3, but they all kept the same basic principles. Its like a redesign of the elites without the split mandibles, that's not artistic license, that's blatant disregard for what the thing IS. Right now it looks way too human, and not like an alien parasite simply using a human as a host.
It could also be so they could preserve hitboxes and use the same rig as the default spartan.
This is infection we're talking about. Multiplayer, not campaign.

That was the first thing that came to my mind, but its not really a good argument. Look at the brute form, its head, for the most part, is in the same place. With some work, you could make a Flood form fit the same hitbox, and still look proper.
Hell, if they just replaced the stupid ass crab claw with a tentacle whip, and added the sensory tentacles to it's chest, that would have been fine.
It looks proper to me. Hell, it looks better than the flood have ever looked before. To me.
No more goofy elephant man lumps. Just a rage ravaged corpse.
The only concern about this design I have are the lack of antennae, and the lack of a right hand. Does this mean we can't two handed weapons anymore? What about fat kid? :C

But that's not what the flood are, this is HALO, not 28 Days Later.
If they simply called the mode Infection, and left it that that, I would be okay with it. It would say to me, "these aren't flood, just Zombie like models made for the gamemode", but they went ahead and called it "Flood", and really, these things just don't look like Flood at all.

In Infection mode the infected can't use weapons other then the sword, or in this case just their claw hand thing.

To the best of my knowledge, normal Infection is left in where you just fight Spartans. This is a gamemode called Flood.

This is Halo, the same series that has a different art-style in every game.

I think it's pretty much the same thing, but in the official matchmaking probably. Hopefully they'll add in the ability to have infection with actual spartans, so I don't have to play with those retarded mutants.

There's a difference between changing an art style and a difference in changing the model/profile all together.
EDIT: Please do disagree with me, Tuskin. Since you can somehow disagree with PICTURES. From all three games.

So... You're disagreeing with my hope that they add in a normal spartan infection mode? That makes sense..
I agree they're not the same, but a lot of things are not the same in Halo 4.

Couldnt have they just had a screaming face like all the others?
I agree they're not the same, but neither is a lot of things in Halo 4.

No I was disagreeing with your statement that they're restarted mutants.
Ah, well it seems somewhat silly to disagree with an entire post on account of how I described them.
Just because it's a new game doesn't mean it's okay to make a clearly defined species look like a bunch of alien lobsters. So it'd be fine if they turned the human characters into furries, since it's a new artstyle?
I've been thinking, they're in-universe reason that Chief armour is redesigned in Bullshit. They clearly just redesigned it, and made an in-universe reason just to ward off the fans, it even has the same battle damage as it had in Halo 3.
Eh, I like the redesign. The new armor grew on me, and it's not too far fetched to believe that the MK6 has a nanite layer capable of changing the armor with the right oversight (Cortana).
[editline]26th September 2012[/editline]
If I had to complain about one thing with Halo 4 so far, it's the FUD redesign.
I agree, the new armour design is great.

New single player interview
http://www.g4tv.com/videos/60887/halo-4-single-player-campaign-gameplay-preview/?quality=hd
I think I'm gonna go dark with all singleplayer stuff for now. I know too much as it is, and I got spoiled with Halo 3.
Not that it ruined the experience for me (knowing the ending out of context was completely bewildering, as I had no idea why there was a Halo firing or what the giant flower thing beneath it was), but still, I'd like to be genuinely surprised this time, like I was with ODST.
I didn't like the new armor at first, and I still think the reasoning is really fucking dumb, but its grown on me after seeing it in game.
