The one thing that's starting to get on my nerves is the fact that no matter how many times people on the official forums ask Ben why he did this, he refuses to answer.
Well, if that's a thing he wants, then he wouldn't answer because his reply is essentially "fuck off, this is how I want it." I mean, if you actually examine message content, that last line there
I still think both weapons are easymode if you play with the game mechanics instead of fighting it but for sure there will be tweaks in the future.
is essentially "I think it's playable if you play how I want you to, but I will make concessions if I went too far." What baffles me after reading that is why. Just saying "hey I want spread cones because I do" would be fine enough as an explanation. But that halfassed attempt at justifying them was ridiculous. If the problem is big heads making headshots easy why reduce weapon accuracy rather than, say, make the heads smaller or lessen the damage of headshots? The former lessens player control, where as the latter two increase the challenge of completing a task, seems like the obvious choice is the latter. Except then he immediately concedes you can fight it "if you really wanted to take the time to master it." So, what, then, he just feels like being a prick and making the game harder to play well, or he's inept and can't explain it?
I've never had any of your problems. My Rifle shots are instant-kill when I aim a bit ahead of the enemy, I mastered this in SA:MP. I actually like it this way.
I don't get it when people complain that the rifle is too weak compared to the smg. If I'm in a defensive position with a rifle and someone with an smg assaults me I almost always win.
I've never had any of your problems. My Rifle shots are instant-kill when I aim a bit ahead of the enemy, I mastered this in SA:MP. I actually like it this way.
SA:MP is exactly what I was referring to when I spoke of games with server-side hit verification. Lag shooting is not fun, especially when you've got some Brazilian (no offense meant, just replace "Brazilian" with any country that would have a reasonably high ping in relation to where you live) with 400+ ping chicken running around you. I absolutely did not want AoS to turn into that; it's not very fun in a war game and it sure as hell was not needed. It's not going to stop me from playing (I don't think it will at least), but it definitely could be better. Its flaws are also quite apparent when you're shooting at stationary targets. And Ben specifically said that you don't have to lead shots (due to lag), in most cases, that is not true.
This game is still playable and unique and good and I'll still play it but I fucking LOVED it before. Everyone having a single deadly as fuck murderous gun was really exhilarating and I guess maybe it's just my reflexes and sensitive mouse but I was really good at it. Now it feels more random, and there's a lot less reward for making awesome bunkers because you need to unload like thirty shots into someone to headshot at long distance and you'll almost always be spotted. I guess that's maybe what he wanted but it just feels really lame, having been so good at something that has just been made random. [editline]3rd July 2011[/editline] If the rifles hadn't been nerfed the SMGs would have been awesome. In all honesty he should have just made them full on MGs that slowed your movement but had even more ammo. Right now they're only really useful for ripping apart impossible to take positions anyways and they should have just embraced that usage.
I don't get it when people complain that the rifle is too weak compared to the smg. If I'm in a defensive position with a rifle and someone with an smg assaults me I almost always win.
That's not what we're saying. We're saying rifle is shit, and SMG is like, ultimate shit of the most ultimate shits. EDIT: And yes, that randomness now feels like when I bought Team Fortress 2 just before they released it for free, with all features. I was just getting better and better, and now it's all about ping. I played on one empty server with very low latency yesterday, and it actually counted all my headshots, but cone is still in though - not to mention that was only one server, and when it got filled it was the old "awesome hit detection" story again.
I like the rifle, it's a pretty amazing weapon and the SMG has been quite useful in many cqb situations
SMG would be better if it didn't destroy forts so fast.
The SMG is great for supressing fire, it isn't shit. The rifle does kill with a headshot, you just need to aim it a bit different. I've had alot of killstreaks in 0.54, all because I move with someone that has an SMG while i'm shooting a rifle.
I've seen people saying the smg is overpowered, it's actually a horrific weapon. If you can even manage to control the recoil enough to shoot someone in the head (have fun shooting them 30 times in the body before they even take damage) the accuracy is so shocking that the bullets go everywhere but where your aiming. I'm sticking to the rifle.
also anyone else getting this bug? it's saying every single server is full, even the ones with like 2/32 players :/. I have the correct version and shit because i was playing it earlier and it's the one on the website.
also anyone else getting this bug? it's saying every single server is full, even the ones with like 2/32 players :/. This just in, ben may be changing the logo. Nothing exciting but whatever! "Hey is there anyway I could get that cool logo design you made for your Ace of Spades blog - I just think it came out really well and I'm looking for a better logo. You'd get full credit if I decide to use it. If you'd like any art from my end, let me know even though my stuff is crap. Thanks! Ben" He is referring to my blog at www.aceofspadesblog.com [editline]3rd July 2011[/editline]
Someone actually made a thread about this (http://ace-spades.com/forums/topic.php?id=3011) today on the official forums and Ben responded to the thread, here are his two posts: It's more than just the cone of fire though. Ben said that hit detection was still client side, but that "hit verification" was now server side. I have no freaking idea what "hit verification" is, but it sure as hell feels like hit detection is now server side, thus ruining the level playing field that was established by the original client side hit detection. I unloaded 4 rounds into someone's head (I was able to see the blood spray as well), just to have them turn around and nail me with one shot. This particular person also lived in the UK (we were playing on a US-based server). If any of you have played games with server-side hit detection, then you'll know about the advantage provided by those with high ping. Quite frankly, this shit is annoying. Everyone was equal from the very first release up to 0.52, now it's just not that fun anymore. The good news is that a lot of people are complaining about it, meaning he might just switch it back (or at least get rid of the "server-side hit verification"). There was no need to implement this in the first place; there are no aimbots for this game, nor are there any hacks that exploited the client-side hit detection. The one thing that's starting to get on my nerves is the fact that no matter how many times people on the official forums ask Ben why he did this, he refuses to answer.
I can email him, he replies to me as you can see.
If you believe that he will actually give you a valid response regarding the "server-side hit verification", be my guest. Plenty of people are still waiting for an answer.
Aww shit is the game really ruined? :saddowns: Other than the building, the thing this game had going for it was the pinpoint accuracy of the rifle- the fact that it was completely and utterly skill-based with no randomness whatsoever. The rifle was absolutely perfect, and if it's been changed at all then it's fucked. As much as I hate to say it, I think he stumbled upon that winning combination that made the internet love the game, and not designed it that way. Hopefully we can have a "classic" mode that sets the game back to how it was if it won't be fixed up. I haven't played the new version and tested out the SMG. How is it in gameplay terms?

How is it in gameplay terms?
Its still pretty fun. There seems to be less building though. I have a rundown of the smg on my blog but Ill copy paste it here. "In my opinion Ben pulled off the Sub Machine Gun or SMG pretty well. When the idea of more weapons was tossed around many feared it would unbalance the gameplay, people liked how trenches and cover were often built instead of the generic run and gun gameplay we often see in games today. Now I find myself using the SMG quite often, it could only be becuase it still has that new gun smell, or just becuase of how different the game plays for me when I use it. Instead of focusing my attack on players far off in the distance entrenched, I switch my focus to trying to destroy the enemies cover and at time going over the top and getting some kills. With the SMG you are able to quickly decimate enemy structures from a good distance leaving the opposing team bare and defenseless. I also find it very useful when working with a rifleman. The SMG soldier can destroy the blocks the enemy is hiding behind and the rifleman can quickly headshot the enemy. So, how do you like the new SMG? Let me and Ben know by voting in the new poll and replying to this post." Please support my ability to buy steam games on sale by clicking the ads in the links on my blog. Since the start in April I have made 15$ and cant withdraw until 25$ lol.
My personal idea for the SMG would be to simply remove it and replace it with some kind of contemporary LMG with a slightly slower rate of fire but more ammo. The SMG is useless as a combat weapon but I think if he buffs the damage/spread it'll probably become more versatile than the rifle, so instead of players using it as an improvised support weapon, turn it into a support weapon! :buddy:
Also reduce the damage the SMG inflicts to blocks.

Apparently, it is against the Google Ads TOS (Terms o Service) to "advertise your ads" lol, meaning you're not allowed to tell people to go to your site just to click on the ads (although you are running a blog, so there is valuable content to be viewed). I've seen it happen multiple times before, when Google realizes that multiple people are clicking the ads on a relatively small website, but not following through with any purchases (or whatever the ad is offering), Google will sever your ad service and tell you that they suspected some foul play. Just letting you know, disregard this if you're not using Google Ads anyway. I was actually hoping the new weapon would be a LMG or a fully automatic assault rifle. It would have a slow rate of fire (compared to the SMG), but it would have the power of a rifle round.

I would also love to see an LMG but not exactly like you said. My idea for a great support gun would be... - Cant move and shoot. - Slightly slower than SMG, slightly more accurate. Becomes almsot a deployable machine gun in a way perfect for suppressing hillsides and whatever else. Also enforces slower gameplay. Nice Normandy map + airstrikes.

So is there still a FP server?
I host one every now and then. [editline]4th July 2011[/editline] Would be cool if someone could host a dedicated server though.
Also, has anyone else noticed grenades not always destroying blocks?
I am pretty it's always been like that. Probably somehow reflected to the damage radius/hit detection.
I installed it but when I click on a server nothing happens
It's really annoying, sometimes the SMG doesn't fire full auto.
What's up everyone? It's been a while lol. Anyway, Ben added a poll (http://ace-spades.com/forums/topic.php?id=3666) to the official forum asking what the community thought the next weapon should be. Unfortunately, the vote has been rigged by someone who keeps voting for the sniper rifle. It's been brought to Ben's attention and will most likely not be counted (as just about no one wanted a sniper rifle anyway). Also, there is now an AoS news thread (http://ace-spades.com/forums/topic.php?id=3607) that will be updated every Sunday with the latest info. As of right now, the juiciest bit of information that we have is an excerpt from Ben himself: "another beta is down the line but for 0.55 i want to fix the drunken camera movement, add dynamic crosshairs, and implement a new weapon - a poll should be up soon about this."
Great.
