I've seen maybe 3-5, all of them black, never in my world.
It was probably a vagrant. When someone dies in an area and loses a pile of souls there, it has a chance of showing up in another person's world as a vagrant enemy that drops some nice stuff.
I've only ever seen one myself in around 200 hours of gameplay, and I fell off a ledge before I could kill it.
Holy fuck, the vagrant looks like that creature. I never knew about those, still after playing this game for such a long time. I shat bricks at first, because I never saw such a thing before. It also matched quite well to the Crystal theme.
I have never seen a Vigrant before, gonna go dropping Items everywhere now, Muhahaha
Wow, I somehow managed to kill some other black phantom dude, a normal phantom and a player at once. It was amazing.
Honestly, he is fucking weak and very susceptible to fire, the real challenge are the other skeletons. Also right when you drop into his cave, just stand there and wait for him to come. The giant skeletons won't be alerted if you just stand there.
But then he shoots a giant spike from the ground and rapes your torso.

I've been going around looking deeper into the huge unspoken lore and mythology, and some stuff is starting to make sense.
Some things are still bugging me to an incredible degree, though.
1. If the Undead are all put into an Asylum way the hell up north, then why is there a bunch of them hanging around Anor Londo? Are those other "Chosen Undead" that failed and went Hollow? Or are they the cursed citizens/soldiers who were killed by monsters, revived as Undead, and have since gone hollow long after Lord Gwyn went to the Kiln of the First Flame and everything went to crap?
2. Why do all the monsters always come back after you rest/respawn at a bonfire? Does sitting at one distort time in a way that only the person who rested there is left unaffected or knows what has happened?
3. If, when you die, you revive at the last bonfire you rested at, then what happens when an NPC dies? Do they die die? How is it that they die die and are gone for good, when you could get thrown into a lake of lava filled with piranha demon death monsters and pop back up good as new? I mean, they're Undead, just like you. Where the hell do they go?
4. How do the other people go about becoming Hollow? Have they been Undead long enough to where they just go insane and lose their humanity? Does something kill them, steal their humanity, and when they revive they become insane? How come you can have literally zero humanity and look like any other Hollow, but somehow are not Hollow?
Anyway, those are just some dumb things I need to know. It'll probably just turn out that all the things I'm asking about are all just things done in order to make gameplay not suck.
For 1, they are servants of the gods who are protecting Gwynevere, and also as a test to make sure they give the lordvessel to the right person. Also, I'm pretty sure undead in Lordran don't get sent to the asylum, just undead elsewhere.
4, I think it has something to do with losing hope. Just about everyone who hollows seems to have lost hope or feels as though they can no longer help you.
Not sure about 2 and 3. 3 would only make sense if none of the npcs were undead. They seem to be driven more by gameplay like you said.

They would have had to have gone hollow after Gwyn went to the First Flame or whatever. That or they just couldn't keep up with putting them in the Asylum :v:
2. Why do all the monsters always come back after you rest/respawn at a bonfire? Does sitting at one distort time in a way that only the person who rested there is left unaffected or knows what has happened?
Time is distorted in Lordran. When you rest at a bonfire, time basically "resets" itself, reviving all the monsters you killed. However, this doesn't answer the question of the mini-boss creatures, such as the Armored Bore, and why they don't respawn.
3. If, when you die, you revive at the last bonfire you rested at, then what happens when an NPC dies? Do they die die? How is it that they die die and are gone for good, when you could get thrown into a lake of lava filled with piranha demon death monsters and pop back up good as new? You are branded with the Dark Sign, because you are the Chosen Undead. It triggers upon death and sends you back to the last bonfire you rested at. The other Hollows don't have this.
4. How do the other people go about becoming Hollow? Have they been Undead long enough to where they just go insane and lose their humanity? Does something kill them, steal their humanity, and when they revive they become insane? How come you can have literally zero humanity and look like any other Hollow, but somehow are not Hollow?
It's assumed that one turns hollow because they have lost hope and gave up. Take Reah for example...after Vince and Nico die, she moves to the Undead Church where she'll teach you Miracles. She expresses her guilt of not being able to protect her friends, and after you buy all of her Miracles she no longer sees herself as useful, and turns hollow. The only question now is why does she move to the Duke's Archives?
Anyway, those are just some dumb things I need to know. It'll probably just turn out that all the things I'm asking about are all just things done in order to make gameplay not suck.
I put my answers in bold. They may or may not be 100% accurate though.
About 3, all undead are branded with the dark sign, not just you.
Today I went to the Crystal Cave to defeat Seath. Suddently I find another invisible pillar which leads me to a weird crystal crab creature, which I have never seen before in this game and I have played it a ton. What is that creature, it dropped a lot of Blue Titanite.
[editline]12th July 2012[/editline]
God I am getting my ass handed by Gwyn. Somehow I am unable to parry him, which always did the trick for me.
Could've been a vagrant like the guy above said. Was it after you dropped down to cross that long invisible path to get to Seath? Turning around there brings you to one of those crystal crabs that drop titanite if you can kill them fast enough. If that's the spot you can continue down another invisible maze-like path for some more stuff
Is it just me or is the whole lore kinda depressing? It's pretty amazing, but it sucks that only a few percent of the players know and care about it (Atleast that's what I think). Dark Souls never ceases to amaze.
The lore is so incredible, on first glance minimal. But once you start to explore the whole story becomes amazing. I like how every character has his personal motivations and goals, the conflicts inside the conflicts. The fight against the Dragons and such.
The only thing that bugs me is who is the fugitive Pygmy? Most people say it is the ancestor of the player and that he started to spread the Undead plague, which can also be seen on the intro.

It is often said that the Undead have become a major plague, they are spreading and Lodran is full of them. Usually they were in the Asylum imprisoned, to contain them. Although the first flame started to fade, perhaps the whole world become more chaotic due to the appereance of demons and undeads.
2. Why do all the monsters always come back after you rest/respawn at a bonfire? Does sitting at one distort time in a way that only the person who rested there is left unaffected or knows what has happened?
The time is distorted in Lodran, although that does not say that much. Perhaps time is reseted when you stay at each bonfire, although I think this might be because of the gameplay. Who knows?
3. If, when you die, you revive at the last bonfire you rested at, then what happens when an NPC dies? Do they die die? You have the Darksign, which means that if you die. You will be reanimated as an Undead in the hollowed form. Most of the NPC seem to have the Darksign to, although they go insane and crazy when they lost their goal or purpose. Although that is not entirely sure. But in theory you can also turn insane, perhaps it has something to do with the motivation and humanity. Like the crestfallen warrior or Reah.
4. How do the other people go about becoming Hollow? Have they been Undead long enough to where they just go insane and lose their humanity? Does something kill them, steal their humanity, and when they revive they become insane? Like I mentioned, perhaps they were to long in the hollowed form and became hopeless. Or they could have run out of humanity. Hollowing is the process of being undead and going insane, the player is in the undead form but never actually hollow. (as long as I understand it correctly) But because of gameplay issues they just changed that. Also the english localization is somewhat confusing at times, hollowing is badly explained.

The entire game has been this way for me, but the most hard hitting moment was the end of Solaire of Astora's storyline. It was just such a letdown for his character to end up like that.

The lore's meant to be depressing and minimal, really. The biggest thing the atmosphere drives home is that you're absolutely alone. Almost no backstory, almost no friendly faces. Hell, we never even have confirmation that we're doing the right thing. I've been a fan of the theory that we're actually the bad guy for a LONG time. Just makes sense that way.

I highly disagree with those points, this game is rich in backstory and lore. Just not entirely visible on the first glance. The lore is really indepth and feels natural to it.

I fear that you would have beaten me to death in mere seconds, leaving back a pile of misery and bad atempt.
I'm getting close to the showdown I think. Only Nito is left, then I'll visit Gwyn.
I just thought back to the beginning of the game and I totally forgot about that knight who dropped the corpse into your cell of the asylum. Who was he? Is he the one you find in that one cell later in the tutorial and who turned to a hostile hollow when you come back? Why did he save you? Maybe I just forgot any explanation there was.

No, I would have beaten you to NEAR death, dropped a humanity for you, and repeated. I like my fights to be long exercises in futility.
I used to invade level 1's in full havel's armor and dual broken sword hilts. Fun times.

I always thought that, but I think the armour is different between the two of them.
If I start a NG+, will the humanity that I offered to the Chaos covenant still be saved?
I offered a lot to the Fair Lady, so I wonder if I still have to restart.
Covenant standings stay, and the shortcut stays too.
Fuck, my controller batteries kicked the bucket and all the stores are already closed. I cannot satisfy my Dark Souls needs :(

Power it with your souls.
Holy fucking shit.
Gwyn just kicked my ass. Badly. Didn't expect some old dude jumping 200 meters swinging a 4m long blade of fire.
His blade is ridiculous, his range is so long. Besides he does some serious damage. He is a complete badass.
His blade is ridiculous, his range is so long. Besides he does some serious damage. He is a complete badass.
And this is after linking the fire. Imagine how badass he was before that.
Is going full on armor knight against him a bad idea then? 'Cause it seems like you need some decent mobility.
Well, I'm getting my ass kicked even though I'm always counting on mobility. Try some decent shield + armor. You need some high fire resistence. The dark knight shield proved pretty useful against his strikes, almost no damage got through.
Gwyn is actually a fucking joke if you master parry, Myziaki confirmed that he was not happy about how it turned out. A cheap way of defeating him is to get the heaviest armor available with loads of poise, then cast the iron flesh spell and then simply tank his ass. You can also use the Black Knigh Halberd, which has ridiculous amounts of damage. Gwyn is also lightning resistant.
That tactic is lame, being mobile is also highly recommended. But it is hard as balls, because with one or two hits, you're dead. I parried him a few times and got some random hits behind his back.
If you have the Dark Wood Grain Ring and only attack him when he tries to grab you, your laughing.
Kinda wish they stuck with what his original concept was when it came to the fight, if you where a mage he would be a magic user too, and such.
