Can someone explain how the hell I get to Lost Izilath via the shortcut? I'm a Chaos Servant +2, but I did so after already killing the area bosses. And where's that one pyromancy lady?

The shortcut to Lost Izilath is right before the Demon Firesage, just after Ceaseless Discharge.
After you kill that big Tarus Demon and ascend the stairs, there's a hole in the wall on your right side with a root going down. Just follow the root down, kill the bugs down there, and touch the door.

You mean the stairs with the barrier'd doorway talking about a great lord?

You mean the big golden fog gate? You have to get the lordvessel and place it on the altar before you can go there.
I like how I have to go outside of the game to understand what the fuck just happened in the plot. The entire game I had no idea why I was doing what I was, but I'm guessing that was more because I didn't understand anything about the game from the get go. Somehow I'd feel better if there was less plot (although I'm not sure if that is possible).

You don't have to go outside the game to understand, it's just not spelled out for you. If you read all the item descriptions and listen to all the dialog, you can start putting two and two together. It's not "do quest get lore, beat boss get next piece of lore" like every other game.

So you yourself have to find the plot...? That doesn't seem like the best mechanism of story telling. Then again I couldn't give a shit for the story, I'm here to get in battles with big pot-plants or butterflies and invade peoples worlds as a pot.
Actually the plot is just pretty bad and neglected with a healthy dosage of needless obscurity.

It's not a "feature" or a "story-telling style".

yes it is. watch enb's lore videos and stop being dumb.

Hence my point "find your own plot"
Also I just got invaded by a guy wearing some big fucking mummified egg hat.

Yeah, it's about finding the plot and sifting through item descriptions, NPC dialogue, clues in the world, etc to formulate some coherent lore for the game. There's plenty of games out there that spoon-feed the plot to you, and I'm thankful that Dark Souls is willing to do something a bit different. It makes you feel as though you're really a stranger in a strange land, rather than the epic hero destined to save the world or some shit.
(Also, that guy was wearing the Xanthous Crown.)
So I'm about to head into the Catacombs and I need a spear/halberd for divine ascension. Any recommendations?

I'd suggest farming a Silver Knight Spear from the knights in Anor Londo. It's a "special" weapon, so it's upgraded using Twinkling Titanite, but it deals Divine damage so it'll keep the skeletons down.

Thanks. As a matter of fact, I've been using that spear ever since I picked it up in Anor Londo but did not realized that I could use it to permanently destroy skeletons.
I just got the Divine Ember from after the Butterfly and enchanted a Greataxe. 14lbs of holy steel.
I didn't go so well fighting the Titanite Demon though, and I had to try and switch to the axe when some skellies came up the ladder, and when I fell through to the Knight I nearly shit my pants, and when I fell down to the wheel skeletons after that I was lucky to Homeward bone out with a few HP left after cleaving them with my axe. I think I might stay away from the Catacombs for now.
What's the best way to practice backstabs?

Few bug fixes and the 60fps mod is now integrated into it.
NICE!

I think this one does it better:

So, as it turns out, I was doing Sif better as an overweight brick that could barely move than an actually agile person. Still got beaten, but at least I did better this time.
Too bad that fucking forest is impossible to get through with all the damn invaders when you can only have one friendly phantom.
I'm liking the amount of downloads on the nude mods already
I hear that I can get banned if I use the 60 fps cap?

From who? Only person I've seen reporting that is a guy on Durante's blog (I'm guessing you seen the same post?), and plenty of people have been using the mod.

That's good to hear. Also that slowdown from texture overriding is really intense for me
I'm skeptical of these ban claims. Over 8,000 people have downloaded the 60 FPS mod and all we have is one guy saying he got banned and one other guy on the nexus saying "i know of a couple of people who got GFWL banned using this."
GFWL doesn't even have an auto-ban anti-cheat system. If it did it would have detected and automatically banned about 8,000 GFWL accounts by now and we'd know about it.

This is what developers think an average gamer is.
Try not to rage.
So all these people talking about how hard Ornstein and Smough were are joking, right? I just fought them. Killed Ornstein in under 10 seconds, and Smough in around 20. Easiest fight of the game so far.
