Love those games. The first one is great for the actual post-apocalyptic experience and atmosphere, while Fallout 2 is better content wise.
Finally bought it. Absolutely hated it for the first few hours.
Then I finally figured out the GUI, and how to work everything. Now that I'm not confused as fuck, this game actually gets really awesome, even for TBC (which I absolutely despise, generally). I finally figured out how to use my steal skill.
BEEN STEALIN SHIT LEFT AND RIGHT
Then I found out a small exploit to get a load of caps by gambling - if you've got 40% gambling skill, just head over to the Hub and go to the casino. Hold down 1 and 4 for about 30 minutes and you get 100k, used it to buy books and some good armor. (I read a 20 page article for History in the meantime)
Now I'm absolutely lovin' it, but at times it can get frustrating not knowing what to do / where to go. Finding certain items like the water chip are annoying as hell.

Fallout 3 was an amazing game. However, it was rather short even though I did all the side quests. Oblivion was sooooo much better!

it'd be nice if they had maps or some shit

wrong thread bub this is about Fallout, there's a thread for FO3
Fallout 3 is Oblivion (not a good thing mind you), so he is right despite being in the wrong thread
If you're having trouble at the start, just pickpocket everything from everyone (save beforehand).
I just can't bring myself to play this, the combat is slow and boring. I try and force myself to enjoy it but it's so dull.

It gets much better later on, when you can blow people's balls off with a laser rifle.
I keep trying to play it, but I always get bored at Shady Sands. I think I'll try it again, though...
did you speed up the combat in the settings?
I personally like the combat system since it makes skills actually matter and give you time to think instead of Fallout 3's run and spray combat. At least they put VATS in, even though I can't do aimed shots with melee which is lame.
I learned the concept of tactics whilst playing Fallout.
Just beat Fallout. Cool ending, I had the Bloody Mess perk, so... the Overseer... :cop:
Starting Fallout 2.

Yes you can? In Fallout 2 you can do roundhouse kicks and shit too.

I was talking about the series' second retarded stepchild, Fallout 3. I know they have them in Fallout 1 and 2 because I'd always do groin shots during boxing matches in the second one. That's another thing left out of the third one, a critical groin shot was the surefire way to down someone for a few turns. But BethSoft left it out for some idiotic reason, along with eyeshots.
I bought Fallout and Fallout 2 from GoG.com, superb purchase, and the extra content is magnificent.
For each of them I got:
º Manual (124 pages)
º Avatars
º Artworks
º In-Game Soundtrack
º Original Soundtrack
º Fallout Bible (205 pages)
º Reference Card
º Hi-Res Wallpapers
And what made me actually understand how to actually play the game is the manual, or else I would have had to guess everything (the controls are explained, there's tons of tips and tricks as well, very nice stuff, one more reason in my book to avoid the Steam version, games like Fallout need to be understood properly before taking a dive in, or confusion and frustration ensues and then players quit and possibly never touch it again).
I still have to leave the first village I went to, in Fallout (I'll try Fallout 2 later). I only barely got out of the starting Vault and killed a bunch of rats outside, and just killing those damn rats was a challenge. I play on Normal difficulty, and I think it's really tough, I'm only Level 3 right now. I play with the unofficial community patch however, and a higher resolution patch as well, there was no way I would endure a 2D game at 640x480, now I play it at 1024x768, I could go as high as 1900x1200 but then the text is so small I would need microscopes to read them, and the characters are so small they look like little dots (exaggeration, but you get the point).
For new comers to either Fallout or Fallout 2 I suggest you guys to take a look at what's available for them at No Mutants Allowed: http://www.nma-fallout.com/

cut down abit on the sugar...
i myself has just arrived at the hub and i'm level 5 after doing vault 13,15 shady sands and junktown quests. is this normal?
I'm level 5 and I'm currently in the military base

Holy shit I hope you have some lube with you.
The only thing now that's frustrating me is that occasionally, I'll be fighting some stupid fucking thing like a rat or a ghoul and when I go into target mode with my spear (why waste bullets on a rat) and select the head / eyes, it seems like every time you miss you get a greater chance to miss. I once had a five minute battle with a fucking rat, all me trying to aim for his head (72%) and his body (95%) and I never landed a shot. I must've gone through at least 15 turns. I just said fuck it and ran to the ladder. I went back down and killed it though, I'm not a rat's bitch.

yeah man
I laughed. So hard.
I currently two alternatives in my save, one where I completely owned the raiders camp and got tons of caps and ammo at the cost of losing Tandi and Ian, or just go back and try to save her, but it's so hard for me
what should I do?
Negotiate with the raiders I guess
everytime it ends in a shoot out and everybody dies anyways

nevermind got it, the speech option to release the girl when he thinks you're his father worked now

Yeah gee I wonder why

All I did in Fallout 2 was aim at the eyes. One or two hits in the eyes with the pulse rifle killed pretty much anyone.

That's fine once you have a high enough skill level, the right weapon and reasonable accuracy. Even then, the effects of crippling other limbs is more dramatic and much more useful.
Like in the New Reno boxing matches or San Francisco arena, a character with low unarmed damage but high agility can even the odds by crippling the other fighter's arms and legs to keep out of their reach. That tactic gave me freedom to finish the fight by aiming for the head and eyes, which had a much lower chance to hit than anywhere else. If I'd just tried to go for them right away, that would have given my opponent a chance to hit back with more hits, more damage and a higher chance to knock me out during their turn.
this game is really awesome, I loved [sp] gunning down gizmo with Kilian[/sp]
