Where has innovation gone? Indie games.
I'm sick of people comparing VALVe to Activison. Activision is obviously the better company, they are making huge innovations in game and character design. -depression- What have VALVe done that is this innovative and new?
You say that sarcastically but it's kinda true as of late v:shobon:v About the Valve thing, Activision is a bag of dicks. Also all the innovation went to Platinum games, every single game is a new IP or some batshit thing you haven't seen before.
Lol only level 31? I bet you are terribad. Invent new things? you mean like new perks and killstreaks, deeper levels of character and weapon customization, and all new modes including: Wager Matches: One in the Chamber, Gun Game, Sticks and Stones, Sharpshooter Combat Training: Test your skill solo or Co-Op with friends against AI enemy players. Meanwhile you are fapping over Battlefield 3 because of what? it has some vehicles and a map that has been pasted x 8 to make it big enough for some crappy jets? Doens't sound exciting at all.
Oh wait, you're being sarcastic.
Some of the Portal 2 mechanics, I mean I haven't seen another game with stuff like Repulsion gel and other stuff like that.
You haven't seen bounce pads or anything of the sort in video games ever? I'm excited about Portal 2 as the next guy but it's really not ground breaking, Repulsion Gel just makes stuff bounce (If it's the thing I'm thinking of anyway) and the other Gel just speeds you up, both things have been in games sense forever and little big planet 2 as a random example lets you do it on your own already.
Your expectations and requirements must be set really high if you think video games are bad since apparently, there is no innovation in today's video games. You're coming off as one of those "NES was the only time games were good!" kind of people. Why is your biggest interest something you think is so bad? Is it that you LIKE to whine about bad things and you have nothing else to do? :raise:
My biggest interest is non-innovative games? Yes, I like to whine about things, or in other words tell other people my opinion about stuff, usually things I'm interested in. [editline]28th February 2011[/editline] But yes, 2011 looks like a great year.
The problem is when the gameplay designers do get creative, they go 100% creative with 0% logic. Spore being the best known example of this. That or they just do such a bad job that you can practically see the gears turning. It's not that there's a lack of ideas for new games or ways to fix existing games, it's that the people currently employed to make them are in the wrong line of work.
I heard the Crysis 2 beta is coming out tomorrow, for the PC, or did my friend lie to me? :saddowns:
Nope, it's tomorrow. [editline]28th February 2011[/editline] and it's the multiplayer demo, not a beta
oh look another thread about a couple shitty games and how that somehow means innovation is dead
oh look another thread about a couple shitty games and how that somehow means innovation is dead
oh look another reply that doesn't contribute anything to a thread and doesn't back up what he says at all v:shobon:v
-What the hell is up with facepunch dupe posting lately jeeze-
oh look another reply that doesn't contribute anything to a thread and doesn't back up what he says at all v:shobon:v
uh the only source i need for my post is the OP.
I think for every CoD game they just mix the textures on maps around to make us believe they're new maps, but they're actually the same exact maps we've been playing for the past few years. Infinity Ward and Treyarch messed with our minds or some shit.

When videogames didn't make to much people were able to take chances. Now that taking a chance can endanger your whole company and cost thousands and because in the 1990 the average gamer was more hardcore while today most gamers are call of duty players it makes sense why we don't see to much innovation.
Let me explain this quickly. You don't have to blame Kodick. You don't have to blame Robert "stelth clown lollolol specel ed" Bowling. Those fucks are just figureheads/mouthpieces for the investors. The people you have to blame for the stagnation of the "industry" are 60-80 year old retired men who are using investments to increase their capital instead of ACTUALLY FUCKING WORKING AND EARNING THEIR MONEY IN THE WORKPLACE. Blame capitalism (The game), not Kotick (The player). Kotick is still fair game for pissing on when he constantly makes dumb statements. Robert Bowling also fits in the same category as Kotick, but Bowling is small time and will be replaced as soon as he complains about ANYTHING (Then again, he is a loyal zombie to Kotick, so that may take some time).
"Where did all the innovation go?" To jail because it does things that are out of line and not accepted by society!
Fans also have an effect on the lack of innovation. Some want the gameplay to stay the same, if the devs want to add a new feature the fans would be upset about it and call the whole game shit. Some fans get bored if the game remains the same for a long time. The other fans want change, but not constant change.
gaming has become a buisiness and innovation is not a buisiness strategy
Kotick killed it, and buried it in his backyard.
When the consoles came in, the innovation went out.
Whenever somebody mentions the innovations of the first CoD they always mention the iron sights. I then have a bad case of nerd rage. WHY DOES NOBODY REMEMBER OPERATION FLASHPOINT!! :argh:
There are a lot of innovative and new games, especially Indie developers try to be new. It's just that those generic games like CoD gain a lot more attention, in the medias and by the players. Look at Machinarium, Braid, Darwinia, Monday Night Combat. They're all great an something refreshing.
When the consoles came in, the innovation went out.
On consoles, games like Metal Gear, Mario, LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout, Oddworld and much, much more were released. You can't really blame consoles (that have existed for so many years) for the developers sudden lack of innovation. Game development are expensive and when some gamers want AAA titles nearly every time, the business suddenly also gets very risky - which make some developers copy the formulas for earlier successes. Luckily, we also do have those developers who knows innovation plays a big part of making an amazing game. Developers like Vavle, Bioware, Mojang, Frictional Games, Media Molecule and a few others (but still a good amount in my head), possess the skill fully and really deserves those money and prizes they earn along their way.
When the consoles came in, the innovation went out.
That's just silly. First of all consoles have been the main videogame-platform since the 80's and the PC only really got on the same level in the mid to late 90's. But then perhaps you're talking about the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii generation which in case is also silly. All of those consoles have a great deal of innovative games. Especially the Wii. The only thing that ruins it for the Wii is the actual visual quality of the games, but other than that the gameplay and core of most games is awesome.

You can only do so much until you can't do anything else.
Whenever somebody mentions the innovations of the first CoD they always mention the iron sights. I then have a bad case of nerd rage. WHY DOES NOBODY REMEMBER OPERATION FLASHPOINT!! :argh:
The same reason no one remembers Kill Switch as the game that more or less introduced the cover based combat system as we know it now.
The same reason no one remembers Kill Switch as the game that more or less introduced the cover based combat system as we know it now.
Kill.switch was damn good, though.
WipEout brought some innovation. It was anti-gravity mario kart without the kiddy layout. in 2097 we got sheilds and checkpoints. in 3 we got eliminator? and hyperthrust (For this game only - Doesn't f-zero have it too? in fusion we got zone mode and upgrades (again for this only) In pure we got expanded zone, but was otherwise generic In pulse we got ship skins, race grids and custom race grids. HD brought nothing but fury brought zone race and detonator to the table.
