I have Heroes of Might and Magic IV. Really good game.
If you haven't played the third one, you're in for a treat. I could never get a feel for the battlefield grid in the fourth game. #3 could be divided into clearly-distinguished hexagons, but the fourth one was weirder. Sometimes my troops would hold still and attack, and other times they'd move about an inch to the left and then attack. Third game was definitely more interesting. Had a lot more towns and creatures, and even more if you count the upgraded forms of all of them. I kinda like that the fourth game allowed the hero to fight in battle, but it was lacking in other areas... Like I hated not being able to upgrade creatures, and it seems like there were a lot more useless spells, and tons upon tons of useless potions, and just generally didn't seem as balanced. I really do love the third game though. The random map generator + WoG changed my life.
I can't even begin to count the number of nights I spent playing this game. Hotseat matches with friends till dawn, XL random maps, with underground, no water, monsters: strong, difficulty: impossible. Best way to play this game. WoG had some cool concepts, but was full of bugs and totally imbalanced. Oh, and multiplayer games are not that infuriating once the turn limit is set to 2 minutes.
I was almost crying of nostalgia by hearing this music. Those who played heroes 2.
This probably has third place on the list of my favourite games of all times. I never get tired of playing this in hot-seat. Also Necropolis owns, and so does Sandro. And while WoG adds tonnes of stuff, it just doesn't feels as good as the vanilla, it's just too much shit on the screen and strange stuff going on. [editline]09:11AM[/editline] Nothing can stop 20000 (or 50000 sometimes) skeletons.
This is number one on ym favourite games of all time. I picked it up at a boot sale and played from the age of 6 to 12 constantly. This game was just too much fun. Me and my brother used to wait till we had fucking huge armies then have a mega epic fight. The winner won the game.
Ugh nostalgia too early in the morning T'was a great game, used to play it a lot when I was 10 - 12. Not sure why I stopped.
Installing it now.
Ah the memories of an 8 year old boy sitting for the first time on a PC and this game was installed by my dad .Thank you G-Guy for reminding me of those good memories .
I love this game so much. Played it all the time many years ago. I got it on GOG a while back and I had reinstalled and played it but I've been constantly screwing with my computer and recently just built a whole new one so I got kind of desynced. Just redownloaded and reinstalled it from GOG and I'm definitely gonna get back into it for real now. Hell, I still have my retail copy, but a CD install never worked right for me on Vista. Horray for GOG.
I was really happy when I found this and Heroes 4(with expansions) at gamestop, and for me, the only thing that I don't really like about Heroes 4 is that it don't have random maps.
Best game ever. Also has an awesome level editor.
Fucking awesome game, still playing it.
I prefer Heroes 4. I don't know why.

Also I'm not really sure I liked the artstyle. Still I didn't think it was bad, just not on par with Heroes 3. Heroes 5 is great too (not as good as 3 though), it feels like 3, but I don't really like the new artstyle (I loved my dark and gloomy Necropolis). Also they removed the old Heroes such as Crag-Hack and Sandro, which pisses me off.

This is why Necropolis was banned in the competitive scene. Also, Necro vs Necro games were nothing more than races for Skeletons and the artifact known as Cloak of the Undead King (dead enemies rise as Liches instead of Skeletons for Expert Necromancers - imagine what 10k Liches can do). Here's some other interesting competitive rules: - no new hero in the first week; - 1 ore mine and 1 wood mine should be near the first town, and they should not be guarded by forces that cannot be beaten with 1st week units; no dual town start; no unbuilt forts at the start of the game - if these conditions are not met, generate another random map; - no Conflux allowed, because of the Magic University; - no Diplomacy allowed: this means one cannot buy heroes that have Diplomacy as a secondary skill; when leveling up and presented with two choices for sec. skills, and one of them is Diplomacy, choose the other one, even if it's Eagle Eye or Estates; - no heroes with 4th level spells can be bought from the Tavern, except if they're heroes who retreated or surrendered (this means no Solmyr at the start of the game); Slow, Blind, Town Portal, and Force Field are the most important spells in the game. Thus, Expert Earth Magic becomes the most important secondary skill.
This game is god-tier. Best strategy game ever made? I think so.
Also, if you're tired of the original single-player campaigns you should try Heroes Chronicles. There's 8 of them.
Both HOMM 2 and 3 were the best of the entire series I still have the first game though, the graphics were so cartoony.
I remember playing this with my brothers. :3:
I generally don't play impossible but I did a game with strong monsters on impossible difficulty, was locked in a small area due to powerful monsters (not underground either, although I did manage to take out about 35 dwarves with just a couple of normal elves and centaurs, ended with my last elf running around the terrain hedge and slowly whittling at the health of the last pack of dwarves), and then I got rushed by the comp on the 6th day with his units going up to 6th tier. I take it that it's mostly dependent on the spells you start with to succeed on impossible (Solmyr maybe?)

I take it that it's mostly dependent on the spells you start with to succeed on impossible (Solmyr maybe?)
We played on impossible because it was more fun: it was all about the resources. You see, when playing on impossible, the starting bonus becomes extremely important. 500 gold? Might be handy when trying to build that Town Hall that costs 2500. On impossible you also start with zero resources - the resource bonus is also a very good alternative, you never know how important 5 Crystals are until you absolutely need them to build that Mage Guild or upgrade those Pegasi. Or maybe you risk with the Artifact bonus and get a nice +1 Luck artifact that can be very useful at the start of the game. Or, if you're playing Necropolis, a +5% Necromancy artifact can make all the difference. We also played with Monsters: Strong, because this is the only way to have fun on XL + underground maps. If monsters are medium, XL maps become boring and repetitive, because at some point into the game all enemy creatures will try to flee. Also, without Monsters: Strong chances of encountering big Dragon Utopias are slim. And we all know those big Utopias drop the best artifacts. It is possible to become locked inside a certain area, simply because some big mean group of monsters is blocking the way. But then, again, some big mean group of monsters is always blocking the path to something in this game. This is why we used this requirement, that Ore and Wood mines should be conquerable in the first week, because with Wood, Ore a Town Hall and a new hero each week after the first (all new heroes come with units), most players will be able to amass a decent low level army and overcome such obstacles early in the game. Some random maps are fucked up, because the generator can be buggy at times, so generate another and see where it gets you - most of them should be playable. And, as I said somewhere above, Solmyr was out of the question - we never recruited heroes who knew 4th level spells by default. And remember: no seemingly desperate situation in this game is that desperate. For example, defeating a Dragon Utopia with a puny little army, by way of Force Field and Berserk abuse: Or defeating a Griffin Conservatory with only 7 Pixies:
