Why the tech of the Halo Universe is a step backward.
Lets start with necron weaponry?
aka Black Hole Rayguns.
Lets not even start with heavy bolters, plasma cannons or meltaguns, shall we?
Or Titans. :ohdear:
With giant bolters ON EACH HAND
Based on how they're used in game, I'm fairly certain that Banshees aren't true air units per say, more of a light strafe fighter, seeing as they don't even go very fast. The Seraphs would pose a pretty big threat, however.
They could cause some trouble, but nothing an AC-130, or a couple F-22 raptors couldn't deal with. Can Seraphs fly at the speed of sound? Just want to clarify that.
Covenant plasma weapons have never made sense to me. Plasma is super heated gas made up of free electrons. The stuff they shoot out of their weapons seems to have some sort of mass and seems very globular. If it was real plasma it would just mist out of the barrel of the weapon and dissipate in the air.
Am I wrong?
As said before, the Covenant plasma projectiles have a solid core, and that is what emits the plasma, it also allows the projectile to penetrate targets.
Not to mention, the Covenant's air force (banshees etc.) would be easily outclassed by modern day fighter jet etc.
Covenant aircraft get outclassed by lone soldiers armed with plasma pistols on a daily basis.
Also, the most important and rare piece of equipment posessed by any army will always be the flag.
Remember matchmaking.
This conversation has really gotten me interested in knowing how the progenitor to every "empire" in this conversation would fare, the Trantor Empire.
There were really only rough estimates on the power a single Imperial Cruiser, which could dish out enough power to wipe out a planet on it's own.
I may be late, but most of the tech shown in Halo is that way for game balance purposes. It's probably a bit different in the lore.
It DOES have Quintillions.
If we're talking numbers...
Total populations:
Mass Effect- Trillions, it's stated repeatedly.
Star Trek- Billions, approaching 1 trillion(997 billion, I think).
Star Wars- QUINTILLIONS
Halo- Presumably billions, but factoring in the Flood and each individual lekgolo worm, then something around a few trillion.
W40k- Let's not go there, yeh?
in the future, a such technologically successful alien empire as the Combine (perhaps best known for creations such as the invisible grenade launcher) will use the USP Match, a pistol specifically designed to appeal to target shooters, as standard issue sidearm for both their civil protection and military units.
The pistol in question. Hence the extra weight added to the end of the barrel.

The MP7 sub machine gun, with its invisible self-loading grenade launcher attached.

They're atmospheric and star fighters, so I'm guessing they can do a lot more than the sonic barrier, albeit it might be a little problematic in atmosphere due to the odd hull shape.
Banshees, however, likely don't even break the sonic barrier.

The Combine are extremely expendable when it comes to their troops, they preferred to use already existing weapons stocks and equipment (CP and soldier gas masks) for their soldiers.
And just for the record, this is the best thread of 2011 so far. Just saying.

I always thought of the Banshee as a slower, more durable WWI Biplane. Biplanes in WWI were extremely vulnerable to ground fire, even a shot from an infantryman in a trench armed with a bolt action rifle could shoot one down.

I always wondered why the Combine used 20+ year old human weaponry instead of supplying CivPol with Combine tech.

It is nice to geek out every now and again, isn't it?

Blimey, we forgot to add combine to the whole debate. Here's my contribution:
The combine pulse rifle is the single sexiest sounding gun in the history of history. You can take your "pew pew" lasers, boy, but leave me to my "BAM-BAM-BAM-BAM".
It even sounds like it's saying MAN-MAN-MAN. Shoot a woman with that gun and if she didn't die she'd get pregnant.

Hell yeah it is. I'm just amazed that we're holding a civil, well made conversation on Facepunch for the first time in weeks.

Don't jinx it man.

Hm, there isn't much we could do against Covenant space technology.
By the way, why don't we compare today's military with the UNSC? :D
As said before, the Covenant plasma projectiles have a solid core, and that is what emits the plasma, it also allows the projectile to penetrate targets.
Actually, it uses a magnetic field to propel the plasma.
Also, according to the books, the temperature of a plasma shot is about 3000 degress Celsius. Just something to consider. :v:
I don't see why kinetic projectiles would fall out of use. Mass is abundant and accelerating it is simple. What incentive is there to change to anything else?
PLus in reality, sure if a gun jams and explodes you get shrapnel but you're more likely to survive that then a plasma or laser gun faltering.

I love the Pulse Rifle, and just the Combine ball is freaking ingenious. PINBALL FROM HELL! I'm guessing its an antimatter ball and that's why people disintegrate when hit, right?
And don't forget about Hunters and Striders...the sadistic bastards.

500 years of military research has yielded armored vehicles similar to our own, but optimized to expose the crew to all forms of danger.

Fucking this. That always pissed me off about Halo, they're so damn powerful but not protect the crew and just put a bunch of optical cameras for them to see.
I think the tech I like the most in Halo is the Halos themselves and the Ark. I mean, if you can nuke China by shooting straight up, that's better than what we have now. It looks awesome, and I don't know of any superweapons you can live on with oceans. All that land is useless, but awesome.
Dear god I just read the first 20 comments of this thread in the bungie forums. I now have cancer

Incendiary cancer?
1. Covenant projectiles are very, very visible, and travel much more slowly than bullets (for the most part).
I agree with you completly, but in real life lasers dont go slow, they go about, well........the speed of light.
I agree with you completly, but in real life lasers dont go slow, they go about, well........the speed of light.
Actually, EXACTLY at the speed of light, barring environmental circumstances.
I don't know if this has been posted yet, but:
While this is all true, it only touches on planetary combat. In the lore of the Halo universe, Covenant forces actually trying to take a planet via ground invasions is very rare. It's only happened to Reach, Earth, and maybe a few other planets. Not counting the Halo installations which are holy relics to them.
The Covenant's preferred method of conquest, since we have nothing they want aside from the rare forerunner artefacts, is to simply wipe out the fleet of technologically crippled human vessels and glass the planet from orbit.
This explains why their shortcomings are so obvious in the one part we see them most, the ground. Because that's not what their strong suit is. They're a, simply put, naval (space faring) collection of Races.
Granted, we don't know what their homeworlds look like. Maybe on their planets their armor is camouflaged. We also don't know if they even give off heat. We know their weapons do, but if you ask me most of the aliens in the Covenant seem like they would be cold blooded.
Haha, link? (to this thread's equivalent on the bungie forum)
It's in the OP, near the bottom I think
