Why the tech of the Halo Universe is a step backward.

Did they actually ever glass whole planets or merely human population centers?
I mean if an asteroid hits hard enough, it's often said the crater is glassed as well, even though you have only relatively small amounts of glass present.
It is implied in Reach that they do not, in fact, glass the whole planet except in special cases. It would take years with the weapons they have.
The glassing thing is mostly UNSC propaganda and also based on the fact that they have never stayed behind long enough to witness a proper glassing.

This. However, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that the UNSC could achieve a quasi glassing, albeit a nova bomb would likely just eradicate the planet entirely.
These guys are hilarious...

Heck a needle from a needler or one plasma rifle round would kill a normal soldier.
Yeah damn i wish we had weapons that would kill people in one round. Oh wait, that's pretty much every weapon ever at the distances of engagement of the Halo universe.
I'd like to see a halo dlc for bad company 2. Don't know how would it work out thought. Also have you heard about this mod for http://www.moddb.com/mods/sci-fi-at-war forces of corruption, kinda relevant.
While we all agree for 500 years into the future humans aren't as advanced as we'd want it to be you have to realise that throughout those 500 years, hundreds of wars have taken place throughout human occupied space and on human colonies - we all know war fuels development, but think about it - 500 years and not a single life-form detected? You would think they'd halt progression on their military projects at some point while they try to make more useful things.
Like pelicans and cities such as New Alexandria.
pelicans
so then why are they still using what are essentially small space ospreys if they have the ability to make relatively advanced aerospace transports? rule of cool?

If there is no-one else to fight against we will fight against ourselves, if not we'll still be pouring money into the military just in case. Humanity will never be a peaceful race.

Civilian transport - Halo: Reach
I don't see how
[img_thumb]http://images.wikia.com/halo/images/a/ac/HaloReach_-_civiliantransport.jpg[/img_thumb]
has any relevance to what I was saying.
I was trying to say they must've been developing other alternatives to general transport/other tech we never see.
Also what's the name of that cruiser? I couldn't find it anywhere.
The civilian transport vehicle.
What cruiser?
I feel this thread has deviated from the original science. I was rather enjoying the science. I might do some diagrams if I can get the scanner working.
Ok then
simplify your point because this is what I got:
-Guns can be cool looking as well as retaining practicability
-You drawing sucks; looks nothing like the original AR
ok? I replied with:
-no, users will most likely choose practicability over aesthetics and sadly enough, practicability does not always mean aesthetics
-well ok then, move along, I merely drew it so it is more plausible based on real life designs
If I'm wrong then correct me; I'd like so see where you're getting at. If I'm wrong as well then reply in a more mature manner because based on your last retort I see, "BLAHBLAHBLAH YOU'RE WRONG NOT LISTENING BLAHBLAH"
[editline]3rd January 2011[/editline]
Also, why the fuck does everyone in halo carry a flashlight and not night vision
It's not "sadly enough" or any of that. Read my post, it's simple.
Guns don't have to be ugly.
Looks don't have to be sacrificed for any practical reason. Functional design. Function and form are not mutually exclusive that's the whole idea with functional design. A good design looks good in a way that is functional. Gun designers don't know this obviously but things like the XM8 is a step forward in that department.
You're not respecting the ideals of the AR, you're not drawing an AR you're drawing some other gun from your opinions that is merely vaguely in the shape of.
And since the shape is already established one must unfortunately draw function from form, not the other way around. This is harder to do but that is how it is.
And I don't know why they don't use NV. ODST's do. Maybe the whole visr thing is really expensive. Spartans don't have NV, you only ever see NV in Halo on the sniper which implies the rifle has it built in rather than the suit. You're thinking practicality the wrong way around again. The UNSC doesn't have it for a reason. Maybe they are stupid, maybe it's expensive, who knows? Be creative.
The UNSC technology seemed to get worse as the games progressed. Halo 1 marine armour was indistructable and bullets just bounce off, vehicles couldn't be destroyed, and they had a pistol that was like a sniper. In Halo 2 for some reason the UNSC had decided to equip marines with Plastic armour, destroyable vehicles and a weaker pistol instead.
It's like Mass effect...they decided to replace unlimited ammo with a thermal clip.
Meh this whole thread seems kind of useless because as stated before "Its a game", all the stuff thats impractical is just to look cool. The end. /thread
Camouflage in space does not work. Hiding in space does not work. Reducing emissions in space does not work as long as you have an engine that essentially makes you one giant massive red dot in space. Same goes if you have engiens off. Unless you find a way to dump heat, the people in the ship would overheat themselves.
The really only way to hide in space is next to a far bigger source of heat.
And yeah Halo tech does bring some smiles in some circles, mostly the way how their ranges seem underneath anything from world war 1 :P
I wish people would stop jerking off to that stupid ass site. Chances are in real life it would quite a bit goddamn more complicated than magically detecting heat signatures or whatever.
Mass Effect has cool space ship physics.
Halo is like Star Wars - Mostly tries to stay in the realms of science fantasy - i.e. Blatent impossibilities, but generally done for the sake of fun.
Mass Effect is like Star Trek - Mostly tries to stay in the realms of science fiction - i.e. actually based on real theoretical science.
I like you have an agree.
What? No, Mass Effect is just run of the mill Space Opera with some borrowed popular sci fi concepts.
Halo is far more proper Sci-Fi.

Except for Long night of Solace, the amount of physics gone wrong there.
Let's not get started on the space cutscenes of mass effect then.
Let's not get started on the space cutscenes of mass effect then.
Cant follow up with that as ive never actually played Mass Effect honestly but if what you say is true then I guess Halo would be more real.
does covenant use guided projectiles? i don't remember seeing any guided plasma bolts flying around. or countermeasures? do they have countermeasures?
They have energy shields and homing fuel rods as well as the needler.

I mean like we have the MLRS, Air to Air missiles(both radar guided and Heat seeking).
I'm pretty sure we would be knocking those banshees right out of the sky with some Decent AA.
Also cruise missiles
[img_thumb]http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/cruise-missile-intro.jpg[/img_thumb]
fuck yeah
and Russian ballistic missiles(topol-m)
[img_thumb]http://en.valka.cz/files/raketa_balistick__topol-m__2__pu_779.jpg[/img_thumb]
also fuck yeah
and, we have thermobaric weapons(if nukes are no option)
and what is ARMOUR LOCK

I believe the ship fired plasma torpedos have heat seeking or some other kind of tracking device.
The fuel rod on the banshee and plasma launcher also posess some magic homing device.
Armor lock is just some stupid armour ability used in Halo: Reach that makes you invincible but you cant move.
Anyone know if armor lock is even canon or is it just for gameplay, there is a different kind of "armor lock" used by Master chief and Jorge (Jorge tells Noble 6 to use it on Tip of the Spear but doesnt and ends up being thrown out the falcon) which makes the armor go into a lockdown that stops the movement of joints to avoid injury

But none of them are anywhere near true heat seeking. They just veer somewhat towards the target, and that's it.

Goddamnit Facepunch.

The Plasma torpedos fired by ships are.
They track Captain keyes as he has them chase him into one of their own ships.
Also I think people are forgetting the reason most of the things in Halo suck at being effective is because of gameplay reasons.
