Why the tech of the Halo Universe is a step backward.

The halo weapons if brought to out present time would be comparable to a world war 2 weapon. The AR, BR and DMR would be similar to the MP44(STG44), BAR, M1 garand.
The DMR can actually be set to fully automatic in canon its just semi for gameplay.
The AR would be more comparable to something like the G3
Uhh, no it didn't. AFAIK, I remember reading about a conflict between the English and the French that the French lost because English longbows had bigger range than the French crossbows.
There was some limitation to crossbows due to the ease they allowed the rabble to kill nobles and guards. Only strong and trained people could use bows, whereas almost anyone could use a crossbow with hardly any training.
Not to mention they were relatively cheap. While a bow or crossbow did have issues with mail, it still worried people.
And the French mostly lost due to better english tactics, not better bows as much.
Also bows tend to have longer range since they are used more with a ballistic arc as compared to crossbows.
Master Chief is an awesome name you just don't like things..
So let me guess this straight, I "just don't like things" because I think that a name that is ONE letter away from being MASTER CHEF is STUPID?! And that joke aside, the name sucks. You have your opinion and I have mine.
Fixed.
Then the first few pages was discussion on how future weapons really WERE going to work. I liked that discussion.
Then page 19 was fanboyism, and I don't know about pages 5-18, didn't read them.
I LOVED that part of this thread.
This is true. Ironically, what this gent has just stated is pretty much what the entire thread is about.
Yep.
Yeah, but to be fair samus' suit is kinda cheating. It doesn't really operate on any known technology. It's just kinda like "Oh yeah, it's chozo so it can dissolve into nothing at any time and then pop back on later, and it can install new components on the fly instantly." It's just so far beyond anything that the humans have in most other sci-fi universes.
Yeah, there's not exactly a real scientific explanation.

this is an m14
[editline]5th January 2011[/editline]
m14 is a pretty dam old gun though

The M14 was used in Vietnam and was basically the M1 Garand with fully automatic fire, modern materials, and a magazine to reload.
I wouldn't wall the Mjolnir armor very useful or practical, since it severly injures any normal human who attempts to wear it (because apparently, only Spartans can handle it).
[editline]5th January 2011[/editline]
Really, if I had a choice, I'd take the trusty ol' HEV suit, or the Crysis Nanosuit.
True, who here would wear Stormtrooper armor? (LULZ)

It's very true. The only reason the Longbow was used more than the Crossbow was because of it's reloading time.

All of which fits into the rest of the gameplay and still positions the light arms of the forerunner as top dog in most gameplay situations.
It only does that if you are an idiot and don't use the system designed to keep it from doing just that. Halsey laments the accident in the Journal referencing exactly this.
Actually iirc Human reaction speed isn't fast enough to compensate for the suit, hence why the spartans went through the entire altering in the first place.
I'm pretty sure it does it to normal humans because their reaction time isn't fast enough to keep with the armour, hence the need for the reactions upgrade on the spartans.
Fall of reach can suck my dick. It makes no sense that way. Halsey's journal fixes that.
So basically you're gonna dismiss anything that contradicts your ideas?
If I remember Cortana Calls him John and in Reach they refer to him as John-117
Cortana calls him Chief and "hey you".

You're going to accept something that doesn't make sense?
How does it not make sense? Considering at the time it was written, Halo was the only game to have come out.
MC's "name" is John-117, and "Human reaction speed isn't fast enough to compensate for the suit, hence why the spartans went through the entire altering in the first place." is correct
this thread is going nowhere.

The suit reacts faster then the body thinking the action can react, that's the problem the suit ran into.

The Oka would fit right into Halo. Hilariously impractical design that destroys itself.
How does it not make sense? Considering at the time it was written, Halo was the only game to have come out.
Because it doesn't. Didn't you even read the book? I could explain it to you but I'd basically be repeating the words in the book.
And then afterwards everyone goes all derp only spartans can use it.
Yeah having limited ammo sure is improved tech
No actually they apparently "did studies" that show that the ability to attain a greater rate of fire makes up for the short reload time. Apparently that was one of the big advantages the geth had. Obviously this is complete bullshit, but it's bullshit that holds together.

There's no point in arguing against what's canon.
Halo is like Star Wars - Mostly tries to stay in the realms of science fantasy - i.e. Blatent impossibilities, but generally done for the sake of fun.

And all of those things are pretty awesome. It's just funny to watch the fanboys freak when you challenge the continuity of something that is obviously not supposed to stand up to scrutiny.
Ninja, please don't go all fanboyish 'NO HAYLO IS SUPR REALISTIC AND DERP EFEKT IS UNRELISTIC NO SCIENC' whenever that's quoted. Thanks.
they would only be able to take two hits then and plasma guns are rapid fire
Yea but they're still blue, slow and impossible for so many reasons.
Also, how is it that the plasma shots aren't effected by gravity if they're moving so slow.
After all, displacement due to gravity on earth=4.9m/s^2 x time^2 and those little blue gobs fly like a softball--probably about 110 feet per second out of the muzzle. So even if you neglect air resistance, the stupid things will fall down about downwards about forty meters in order to travel the distance of a football field. Even if you double or triple that speed (which would be untrue to the game as I see it), you're still talking about your shots going fifteen feet below where you're aiming. I suppose they could probably have aiming technology to compensate for that, but it doesn't even come into play anywhere in the game or the novelization.
Magical magnetic containment.

I can't imagine a suit being so impractical as to severely injure any normal person who tries to use it. I'd take the Crysis Nanosuit, or the HEV suit.
I can't imagine a suit being so impractical as to severely injure any normal person who tries to use it. I'd take the Crysis Nanosuit, or the HEV suit.
It's not so much impractical as being simply too powerful for a normal human to use it.
It's not so much impractical as being simply too powerful for a normal human to use it.
And that is why only Spartans use it.
It's not so much impractical as being simply too powerful for a normal human to use it.
I'd call that impractical. If the UNSC had been intelligent about it, they could have equipped normal soldiers with the Mjolnir armor, instead of just Spartans, which would have greatly evened the odds against the Covenant. However, they had to go and make them specifically designed for Spartans.

By the time you make it possible for normal humans to wear it, the armor would be no different to ODST suits.

I'm sure they could make suits as durable as Mjolnir armour, without all the "move as fast as you think" bullshit.
I'm sure they could make suits as durable as Mjolnir armour, without all the "move as fast as you think" bullshit.
Again, that's pretty much ODST armor.
