Why the tech of the Halo Universe is a step backward.
480 km/h is not that slow, besides the AC-130's weapons would take out the seraph before it even get close.
I doubt an C130 would last very long, it's made of aluminum. If you guys want, I can go take some pictures of what plasma does to aluminum.
Even the highest quality aircraft grade aluminum is horrible horrible shit, it's only redeeming value is that it's light. It won't tolerate fatigue and it won't tolerate temperature.
So, get a big plane, poke a bunch of large holes into it's structure with a weapon that generates temperatures high enough to instantly liquefy the aluminum and you have a plane that is generating higher drag on a structure that is no longer tempered, causing it to fatigue at a rapid rate.
It spells absolute disaster for the plane.
A Combine vs. Covenant debate would be much more interesting.
Just bringing it up, but isn't the covenant doomed, as strong as they are I feel I recall them being in the process of something that looks to be a huge civil war, their military leaders are power-hungry and care more about getting honor than victory, and that the prophets themselves had different plans from each other?

Not to mention, the Elites (pretty much their greatest asset n terms of ground troops) have left, only to be replaced by the brain-dead, useless Brutes.

Not only have they left but they are on OUR side now correct?

Yep :D

Anyway, who cares, Combine > All
The whole timeline of the latest few parts of halo is quite confusing, the books have some 3 to 4 different points of view going on at any point in time, at the time of the invasion of reach you have every spartan but master chief on reach defending it, while master chief is off doing his own shit on some covenent ship(which is where cortana works out the targeting on the covenants plasma weaponry for their ships, I believe) and then he goes and blows up an entire invasion fleet that was on its way to somewhere(earth?)

Can't we just give all our soldiers crowbars?

Nope, only Gordon Freeman can wield the crowbar.
Nope, only Gordon Freeman can wield the crowbar.
We could mount a crowbar launching weapons platform?
Name one armoured vehicle that can withstand over a dozen direct missile hits?
I know this is a bit late, but there was a challenger tank that took many direct hits from rpg fire and only had a camera damaged.
We could mount a crowbar launching weapons platform?
No, we should build a functional sniper crowbar.
You certainly should care because it's very relevant to the discussion.
Saying "this discussion is dumb" is *related* to the discussion, but it isn't particularly useful. Of course comparing a video game to real life isn't going to be very fair, but you don't have to spoil our fun.

Actually, they're not. Now, they're just indifferent to us.

Who, the Combine?
No, we should build a functional sniper crowbar.
We could make MAC guns shoot large crowbars right?
Who, the Combine?
No, the Sangheili(Elites). In Halo: Chronicles, it's expressed that the Elites aren't necessarily allied with us, just no longer at war with us, even with the Arbiter's urging.
We could make MAC guns shoot large crowbars right?
Or you could do it the old fashioned way, and use the Gravity Gun to fling crowbars.

Well, it basically means the same thing when it comes to the war. The Elites fight alongside us.
Did I mention how fucking useless the Brutes are?

Oh, no doubt. The Brutes are literally so batshit mother fucking stupid that they actually reached regular space travel ~3 times, and each time went to war and knocked themselves back down to the industrial era. The only reason it didn't happen again the most recent time was because the Covenant intervened before.
Hey I thought you were going to leave the thread forever.

Not to mention the Elites look 500x cooler than Brutes. Brutes look like giant over-sized apes. I was really happy when I found out Elites were the enemy in Reach; they are very fun to fight.

Combine probably have been trained by a few drunken idiots, because the rebels (despite being rebels) are much better shots for some reason.
The only reason they still stand is because of their things like Hunters and Striders

The Half-Life 2 Combine are basically a semi-trained, understocked militia. There's a reason everyone is frantically rushing to shut any and all Combine-related portals, you know.

And, you know, the fact that they are an immense, multi-dimensional empire.
If this is a debate about AI, then I will definitely support the Combine soldier's AI, as it is much better than most make make it out to be.

Wrong. They are genetically modified super-soldiers, implanted with Combine technology, and having undergone invasive surgery to strengthen their fighting capabilities. They are then incased in a very thick, full body, airtight protective suit of armour. They are also equipped with highly deadly AR2s.

I meant in comparison to the Combine invasion forces, you silly skink.
Halo is like Star Wars - Mostly tries to stay in the realms of science fantasy - i.e. Blatent impossibilities, but generally done for the sake of fun.
Mass Effect is like Star Trek - Mostly tries to stay in the realms of science fiction - i.e. actually based on real theoretical science.
So these "mass effect" relays make more sense then Halo's "slipspace drives"? And giant robot ships that exterminate life every few thousand years makes more sense scientifically then Halo's story? Do you even know what your talking about? (Halo makes just as much sense as Mass Effect, which is none at all).
yes, but think of the size of those plasma shots.
Even the smallest one is the size of your fist, so getting hit by one would easily leave a fist size hole right through your chest.
Bullets wounds can be treated and survivable if treated quickly.
A fist sized hole in your chest would drain alot of blood extremely quickly. Not to mention the intense pain you would suffer from basically having super heated lava in your chest.
Wouldn't plasma cauterize the wound it makes?
Yeah. It'd probably also make your blood and inner organs boil or something.
Both Mass Effect and Halo draw on the harder side of science fiction for certain elements. Mass Effect is more obvious though as it simply rips off anything remotely popular and throws it in the boiling pot. Halo has some more original ideas. And frankly, far more interesting ideas too than "lol save universe nao k"
Just skimming through some of my halo books, still really like the training aspects the spartans had as a kid, i mean completely ignoring the ethics of it and such, but they are really an elite fighting force, and even without the suits would be a very suitable fighting force.
Yeah. It'd probably also make your blood and inner organs boil or something.

Halo has more original ideas? When I first watched the movie Aliens I realized just how much it borrowed, then I read Starship Troopers and it happened again. The only thing in Halo I can see might be original is the Covenant and they aren't particularly imaginative. "Ok so there's these aliens right? They get shields, and laser guns, and some of them get cloaking things."
