All this thread is doing is making me want to play Halo CE.

You should do a melee and plasma pistol only run.

Hmm sounds fun, shame the plasma pistol is godlike in CE.
In a world, 500 years from now.
Sidearms outclass assault weapons.
:v:

Really? I always thought it was one of the most ineffective guns in the game.
The human pistol on the other hand...
Really? I always thought it was one of the most ineffective guns in the game.
Oh god no, its like 3 shots to kill a grunt, 6 for an elite.
Shit is crazy, sucked in 2, 3 and odst but in CE and Reach its awesome.
Boop.
I love you.

ps how did the half life discussion start anyway? was there a thread on bungie messageboards or something? (can't be bothered to rummage through 35+ pages that are quickly growing)

I'm suggesting it more because of its awesome melee animation. You know, where you sucker-punch the enemy with your super-soldier fist?

True dat.
I guess it's okay in Campaign, but in multiplayer it is pretty useless.
The halo 1 plasma pistols and rifles were great throughout the game, although I always preferred an assault rifle or shotgun against the flood.

in CE you can fire off the plasma pistol almost faster than the assault rifle
and that's saying a lot because the assault rifle sprays shit everywhere
You should do a melee and plasma pistol only run.
i do that online
but on reach cuz i can sprint lol
in CE you can fire off the plasma pistol almost faster than the assault rifle
Funny enough the CE AR had the highest rate of fire of all of them around about 900 rounds a minute.
Comapred to the Halo Reachs 550 rounds.
Intricate web of gameplay mechanics? You mean alternating between cutscenes, puzzles and linear corridors of 10 health enemies?
If that's the way you think of Half-Life, then Halo is nothing but walking through identical, symmetrical corridors, doing nothing but mowing down aliens.
Yeah, blowing things out of proportion doesn't work.

i must say that i completely agree with you, but half life pretty much did the same thing, and they did it worse
i mean think of the cartographer level, huge open spaces make me go :v:
and you have to admit, the open levels in half life were either 5 minute jaunts through confined boxyard spaces with open roofs and chain link fences on all sides, 10x10 squares of desert with a road and some guards and trucks, or xen
though, the game was made in 1998 so HUGE WIDE OPEN CANYONS WITH MANY DIFFERENT ENEMIES were kind of beyond the limits at the time
Oh shit it is isn't it.
Never mind my bad.
But my point still stands rocket launchers dont have much recoil, its not like its going to fly out your hand from shooting it.
oh right i guess the reason someone has to actually stand behind the person firing and hold the other end of the launcher is just because he's retarded
Halo is amazing in nearly every way. I can honestly say that everything Half-Life 2 does Halo does twice as good. It's amazingly popular for a reason.
Now I haven't really played the original, but it's from the "last generation" of shooters. The last generation almost (almost) being defined as anything pre-Halo. It upped the quality bar that much.
Halo is a generic, monotonous, linear, repetitive, Sci-Fi first person shooter. The game puts you in the shoes of Master Chief, a generic super soldier with no personality, or intelligent dialogue, other than a few cheesy one-liners. You spend most of the game walking through identical, symmetrical corridors, mowing down some colourful looking aliens, with sub-par weapons. You are told that you are a super soldier, but this obviously does not affect the gameplay in any way, as you can die from the most ridiculous things (such as being hit by a pylon.) The story is the typical one of humans coming into contact with an alien race, and there being a giant super weapon etc. etc. This is told through generic cutscenes, with very little character development, and very little sense of urgency. The multiplayer is the reason Halo is popular, and I would argue that there are much better choices.
Overall, I don't see how Halo is 'amazing in every way.'
above poster is awesome

This is an intelligent post with fact and truth, unaffected by bias. This is the type of post I dream we all could make. God bless you.

Yes it was beyond the limits of tech at the time. And these days, all rocket launchers only require one person to to use. (I was watching a thing about the evolution of rocket launchers on the Military Channel today)
i agree but i also say that applies to half life
and you can't disagree because deep inside you know it's true

Obviously not true with Half-Life.
You spend most of the game walking through identical, symmetrical corridors, mowing down some colourful looking aliens, with sub-par weapons.
The enemies in Half-Life 2 look intimidating, and are anything but colourful. Also, the weapons are great, for example the Gravity Gun or AR2.

and thus you are biased
i would have written something about halflife and all of the things that i can compare it to with your post but i'm going to leave this thread instead
Why is it impossible to agree that they are both pretty acceptable games?
Why is it impossible to agree
Because we're human.

This is VERY true. None of it applies to Half Life.
Why is it impossible to agree that they are both pretty acceptable games?
They're both acceptable in their own ways. Half-Life for story and fun, Halo for multiplayer and fun.
They're both acceptable in their own ways. Half-Life for story and fun, Halo for multiplayer and fun.
Emphasis on MULTIPLAYER. Not Singleplayer, MULTIPLAYER.
And this is why...Everyone's opinions are biased.
Cake and Chosen want to make everyone see it as shit they see it as.
We get it.
On a side note the Star Wars tech and Star trek is enough to destroy anything

Though Star Wars is way more fucking dangerous. Star Trek is about ships exploring. Star Wars is about wars in a galaxy. The war one has more powerful tech, obviously.
(And I'm biased, I know. Everyone is, no matter how much one may try not to be, because opinions ALWAYS affect someone's choices)

As much as I love Half Life, and it pains me to do this, rebuttal time.
Half Life is a fairly generic shooter too. Sure the level design and script is a Milena ahead of Halo, it doesn't stop it being a fairly generic shooter deep down. You play Gordon Freeman, and mute scientist who can apparently shoot any gun, drive any car and walk through any environment/ be hit by obscenely heavy weights (lolphysics) and just shake it off, with no damage to a suit only designed to stop radiation and pressure venting. You mow down hordes of similar enemies, with no real variance until the last few chapters of each entry, using weapons which really have no use in most situations, ammo for the SMG will get you through almost anything the game throws at you. The gameplay in Half Life is fairly weak when you boil it down, but the storytelling is what makes it a excellent shooter.
Whereas Halo is as you said, a generic shooter with little to no real story telling that causes me to give a single fuck what happens. But there are real reasons for the story in the back story they never once try and introduce you to in game, Master Chief is in a suit of titanium based armor that weighs tons, I would fucking well hope he can brush off some of the dumb stuff that happens. Halo has mostly prioritized gameplay over storyline as emphasized by the fairly solid online parts.
I'm surprised you lot have kept this thread going for so long without it dissolving into a shitfest. It's been a fairly interesting read at points.

You bring up some very good points. I gotta correct you on one thing though, the HEV suit WAS designed with combat in mind, as they sent scientists with HEV suits to Xen before the events of Half life.
(And these scientists were also armed with MP5s and lots of ammo so they were obviously ready for combat)
