while we're at it soldiers in tf2 could totally beat master chief because I mean rockets and explosions
Tthe armor was never meant for combat.
It WAS made for combat. The scientists on Xen in HL1 were armed with MP5s and wore HEV suits and the U.S military had it's soldiers using experimental Bulletproof Vests based on the HEV suit. Don't forget that the HEV suit is a VERY experimental piece of equipment being produced during 1998 (or 2000 or whatever).
No offence Chosen but you're taking this based on gameplay but I'm taking it in context. It's an experimental suit being used in 1998, when technology wasn't at it's best. Obviously it isn't as good as Spartan armor but it's still effective for it's time. I mean, if U.S soldiers had anything like the HEV suit today, imagine how much survivability would improve!
Game mechanics? It really depends on the difficulty. Sure, you can survive a rocket on EASY but on hard, a few bullets can put you six feet under. Same for Halo.
Actually, you can survive rockets on normal in Half-Life, while you can't survive them on easy in Halo. Also, there is nothing to base the argument on, EXCEPT mechanics, since Half-Life doesn't have any novels or anything.
TF2 is just an unrealistic game in general. And the soldier in TF2 is a better character than Master Chief anyway.

It is great for its time. Just trying to show that, compared to the Mjolnir, the HEV doesn't stand a chance. Then again this is expected.

Really? I hadn't noticed.

Exactly, I mean no offence to Chosen but I refuse to take the absolutely absurd stance that the HEV suit owns the Spartan armor. The HEV suit was good but if you compare them fairly, the HEV suit loses, I'm sorry. but as I've said, there IS a 500 year difference where advances should ONLY be expected, no matter how absurdly dumb the advances might seem.
I am simply talking game mechanics here. The point still stands, the HEV suit can tank an RPG
And I didn't take any offence from your comments CakeMaster, you don't have to defend me if you do not wish to do so.

I'm sorry, but you ARE right if we're talking about game mechanics but you compared the two suits earlier in an unfair way. You pointed out how the HEV suit can take a direct hit from an RPG (which it CAN) but the Spartan armor can't take a direct hit from a rocket. How do we know for sure the rockets in the future aren't much more damaging or powerful? For the sake of fairness, we need to take that into consideration.

Couldn't have said it better myself. An AT4 compared to a rocket launcher 500 years in the future is a bit of a stretch.

okay that's nice
I want to see gordon jump out of a space station and land on his feet

Well, as seen in Route Kanal, Gordon survives rockets fired from a Combine APC. He also survive's a strider's warp cannon.

I knew this point would be brought up. First of all, Master Chief's armour locked up or something as he fell; useful for surviving falls in certain circumstances, but locking up your suit means complete immobilization, which wouldn't be that great in a firefight.
Also, it isn't a coincidence that, in the cutscene where Master Chief falls from the sky, Cortana is rambling on about luck.
Master Chief doesn't exactly land on his feet anyway.
If you disagree, next time you play Halo 3, go jump off of a cliff, and see if you survive.

Wait another 5 years (in Valve Time of course) for HL2 Episode 4.

Because he's not Chell, who had specific implants into her legs so she could fall from great heights. (This is the explanation in Portal)

These are very good points.

How long is BmB banned for again? I want to know how much more time for fair and intelligent discussion we get to have left before he arrives again.

I'd say he's gone for a week at least. Hopefully a month.

Thank god, I love this very civilized discussion we're finally having with him gone.
the only point you keep bringing up is that he can survive rockets and beams (NEVER directly, only the splash mind you), but that's only when he's got full shields
halo's idea of full shields is 3 or 4 shields added to your regular shield that regenerates with overshields, you can survive several rockets/fuel rod shots with full overshields
and since you keep insisting it's canon and not gameplay related at all I'd like to point out the citizens, since apparently everything is canon
the only point you keep bringing up is that he can survive rockets and beams
Durability is the most important part when discussing powered armour.
NEVER directly, only the splash mind you
Actually, you can take direct hits from the APCs rockets. Master Chief dies from the splash damage of a rocket anyway.
halo's idea of full shields is 3 or 4 shields added to your regular shield that regenerates with overshields, you can survive several rockets/fuel rod shots with full overshields
Not even at full shields in Half-Life. I had 30 suit power, and still survived.

I think gameplay mechanics is important to consider but only where it makes sense. Having you die for falling down a small cliff that goes out of bounds might not make sense but it's a gameplay mechanic, for example.

you are so biased it isn't funny
at least cakemaster doesn't hold up freeman like he's god, I want to converse with him

We all have bias. It's called opinion. I don't hold up Freeman like he's God; he's actually one of the weakest characters in gaming. I am simply doing a comparison of the two suits, from a gameplay perspective.
at least cakemaster doesn't hold up freeman like he's god
The whole point of the story of Half Life is that he's just lucky or being helped, not the invincible being the Resistance treats him as.

This is true, bias is ALWAYS created by opinion.
at least cakemaster doesn't hold up freeman like he's god, I want to converse with him
In fact, amusingly, I didn't even mention Freeman's name in this entire debate.

you refuse to accept that mjolnir armor, in any given iteration, is better than the HEV no matter how many reasons we give
it's just so much better because, um, once I survived an RPG from it so it's the best :downs:
In fact, amusingly, I didn't even mention Freeman's name in this entire debate.
That is amusing, now that you mention it.
As we all know, if he was really worshiping him he'd be like BmB in earlier posts about Master Chief, "MASTER CHEEF WOOD OWN SHPARD BECUZ YUR OPINONS SUK AND MINE ROCK"
you refuse to accept that mjolnir armor, in any given iteration, is better than the HEV no matter how many reasons we give

That does kind of show that it is more durable.
[editline]17th January 2011[/editline]
As for your 'reasons', I believe I countered most of them on the previous page.
Ever play Halo 2? There are certain parts you are required to jump off a waterfall. You survive it with no harm done to your person. Not to mention there are certain parts you can survive jumps like that. Of course they will kill you jump off a cliff not intended to be jumped off of.
Also the fall in the beginning of Halo 3 isn't luck. It happens 3 times throughout the Halo games and all times, the character survives. That isn't coincidence, it's just the suits working as intended.
Whatever, I know when I've lost an argument.
Good debate though.

I like to see a person who accepts defeat in a mature and appropriate fashion. Good job.

So guys, I was wondering. What WOULD the soldiers in Halo do if they lost power? They seem to depend on having electricity a LOT.
