WoW's probably it.
Loads and loads of content throughout the years, great expansions and shit.
The reason i like eve, and personally think its the best, is because, the game is mostly ran by the players, i.e. the market, wars, and so on. i never got in to WoW but i think it has earned its place in the top MMOs
WoW is the most successful, and actually fighting against KOTOR for game of the decade award.
But a lot of people don't find it their type, and a lot of people do. I tend to find that a lot of the people who DON'T get into it and bash upon it have never played it or only gotten to level 5 before even leaving the starting area.
Eve online probably is the game which you yourself can actually change the entire thing, the entire games economy and politics is all player driven, you can take over space, defend space and upgrade it.
Then there's Darkfall, which is basically the eve online of fantasy MMOs, in politics that is, since you can build cities, defend them, have boat battles, fight in first person and 3rd person, and bunch of other things.
I loved WoW when I played it, I just quit about 3 months ago after playing it for about 2.5 years. Wrath of the Lich King was pretty cool but after they made Wintergraps an instance and added a new BG (forgot the name) I was done it's repetitiveness of the PVP. I never really got into PVE but it was enjoyable.

World of Warcraft could be considered the most successful MMO. Although that doesn't mean best, and my opinion doesn't really matter.. I like a lot of MMOs, so I can't really choose. The one I played longest though was WoW, but I guess friends attributed to me playing it as long as I did.

Personally I do not consider Guild Wars to be a mmo, but it is a game that I think could last a while without it's community.

I thought I'd just share this here, seriously WoW is [b]perfect[/b] at what it does.
If you want to get up as high as 12million subscribers, you gotta make something [b]totally[/b] new.
This mostly goes for game-designers(?) such as Age of Conan, Runes of Magic and other games which are recycling all these same UI's, PvP'ing, PvE'ing and so on which WoW made the best already.
Personally, LotRo, but WoW is fun too.
After I played my EVE trial for 2 days, I was immediately hooked, and bought 60 days of game time.
So EVE is my vote.

WoW is great at what it does, but it's a much different game than EVE is, and I prefer what EVE is over WoW.
I think Star Wars: The Old Republic is going to dominate all other mmos. But right now it's wow.
I've heard alot of people don't like it, but personally I think Age of Conan is great.
I haven't tried many MMO's though. :/

The looks were sadly deceiving for me.
Guild Wars, I played both GW and WoW and I found WoW really boring.
But Guild Wars gets pretty boring with time as well, but what game doesn't...
I started out on WoW, moved to GW, then to City of Heroes, then Fallen Earth. If you can stand some of the eyebleed, City of Heroes is definitely at the top.
