I have heard good things about evochron legends, but haven't had the chance to play it myself. It is, however, much more complex than X3. I'd suggest that if you can stomach it, otherwise X3: Terran Conflict.
Terran Conflict is a buggy, unfinished hunk of crap and is the most regretful purchase I have ever made. This is coming from a calm, patient player who likes this genre. Definitely not worth the money or time (no matter how small) you put into it.
Do not buy.
