As for tanks, MBT's only use one person to drive/gun because looking for gunners when you aren't with people on voice comms was really annoying. The flipside though is that if you do get a gunner, the gunner seats are really good. Whenever I roll with my friends Magrider I get half our kills. I like this design more than PS1, but I wouldn't mind a choice.
Why does a game have to simplify itself for the lowest common denominator to have "an actual player base?"
what did they do exactly to make it appeal to everybody? the way i see it, brogamers are going to get ahold of the game, play it and get irritated because they can't actually do anything because they're not in a squad and then leave the game because they refuse to use teamwork to get objectives done. everybody i've met in the beta is more than glad to be on a team, and usually you focus more on the outcome of your team and your objective more than how the gameplay overall works. when you're fighting for whatever biolabs, you're not paying attention to how annoying the reflex sight is (unless you're VS, haha faggots) because you're too busy using it to blow people away to protect your boys
As for tanks, MBT's only use one person to drive/gun because looking for gunners when you aren't with people on voice comms was really annoying..
That was the point of the MBTs. Required you to use teamwork to be any good, and they were extremely effective because of this. Lightnings were for people who wanted to go solo. Even if they DO give the option, it doesn't matter. You could have 25 specialized tanks with a gunner and a driver, or you could just have 50 tanks. They shouldn't be something spammable like that.
what did they do exactly to make it appeal to everybody?
Ironsights and low TTK so that gunplay is easy as hell and like every generic fps out. 1 man MBTs so that anyone can fly solo in a tank. Everyone gets all vehicles. Base capping is going to get built on, but I had a problem with that. Token Sniper/stealth combo. Snipers can be used at like 2 feet away effectively. A few updates are starting to get me a bit hopeful, but as it is, it needs a lot of work. It's just feels like a giant Battlefield 3 arena at the moment. I'm just saying so far I'm disappointed and it doesn't feel like Planetside. We'll see when it's released though. I still have had a bit of fun with it though.
They still gain massively if you get a gunner, it's just that it's an option now as opposed to a necessity. The important thing to keep in mind is that they aren't making PS2 for nostalgaic PS1 players but for the general population and having tanks that outright required you to pick someone else up to use the main gun wouldn't be fun. [editline]22nd September 2012[/editline] Again I have played both games so I see where you are coming from but for general play I like the idea of having a 75% effective tank go to 100% with a secondary gunner over a 10% effective tank going to 100% with a gunner because I don't always have someone I can rely on to gun for me.
But that was fun.
It's just feels like a giant Battlefield 3 arena at the moment.
It feels like BF3 because it's a shooter on large maps with vehicles and infantry and objectives and ironsights. So I guess yeah I agree but for it to not "be BF3" it would have to undertake a lot of basic design/mechanic changes that are probably out the window this late in beta. [editline]22nd September 2012[/editline]
But that was fun.
I'm not saying it wasn't fun I just don't think it was objectively better than the way PS2 does it. Both ways have their pros and cons but they went with this. I'll agree that it was a change made to better facilitate new players but I don't see that as a bad thing. It's important to keep in mind that Planetside 1, being a very niche title, has a community that is very aware of how the game works, and even then its rough around the edges. With PS2 being a F2P title releasing in 2012 it would seem very odd that you can buy a tank and not actually use it without coordinating with other random people.

However, vehicle systems and certification systems need to be completely reworked, and people need to take quite a few more hits before going down.
no, it feels like battlefield because the entire way weapons handle, aiming, ballistics, shooting, and recoil is copy pasted from BF3. and that's probably intentional because the game wants to attract casualfags.
Oh hey cool someone not gargling SOE's balls and is talking sense.
no, it feels like battlefield because the entire way weapons handle is copy pasted from BF3. and that's probably intentional because the game wants to attract casualfags.
Which feels like weapons from any other FPS. Again, I'm not saying that isn't true I'm saying that's kind of how FPS design is right now. Yeah I mean I guess you can bitch about "casualfags" but thems the breaks.

Yeah I mean I guess you can bitch about "casualfags" but thems the breaks.
COD has guns that handle completely differently, there is a particular weighty and sluggish feeling that BF3 has, combined with HURDUR motion blur.
Well you can fix the motion blur by turning it off. As for sluggish weapon handling, last I heard it was a known issue and that they will be constantly tuning it during beta so its very likely not intentionally similar but I doubt it's going to change significantly.
i dont know dogg all i know is planetside 2 is easily the best fps i've played since project reality and i've played a lot of new titles between the release of these two
since the patch there are terrible population problem... on my server it's 24% VS and 52% TR, and we only get like 6% bonus xp, it's beyond retarded when we gain like 10 auraxium vs their 70
Honestly I'm p sure if they did anything except perfectly carbon copy PS1 and call it Planetside 2 people would say it's an xyz-clone. I'd say it feels like Battlefield 3 in the very basic premise I noted earlier. It feels pretty unique actually from most shooters I've played.
plus you're still seeing this the wrong way: the way to winning is through teamwork, not through gunplay you can take over facility after facility and pepper targets with hipfiring and be absolutely fine. i can play for hours without getting a single kill or dying once and rack up points and enemy positions like no other solely because your main goal is to capture those points and not lolo lets fite bad guys. i think we usually get about four points before the opfor catch on to what we're doing and finally fight back and by then we're so well defended that my squad and i can just keep on waltzing through their backdoor without firing a single shot [editline]22nd September 2012[/editline]
since the patch there are terrible population problem... on my server it's 24% VS and 52% TR, and we only get like 6% bonus xp, it's beyond retarded when we gain like 10 auraxium vs their 70
haha yeah i've been noticing this. i'm a TR player at heart but there's no fun in playing when you have a higher population than anybody. but it's weird because usually VS have the most players from what i've seen [editline]22nd September 2012[/editline] i want the NC iron sights on TR weapons. oh my god, the NC have the best iron sights i've ever seen. they're so precise and thin and not in your way
Any game with guns, ironsights, and vehicles is a clone of Battlefield 3. Planetside 1 is in fact, a BF3 clone. Man you guys are stupid :downs:
i just remade a character on himalia because i couldn't stand the terrible population problem anymore, 54% terran is just terrible
anyone interested in trading 2 firefall beta keys for a planetside one? Kinda tired of watching streams and waiting for a beta invite.
Wow, this game runs like absolute shit now for me.
It's amazing just how much stuff they managed to break in that last update.. The cone of fire on a lot of things is totally screwed, there are floating buildings that seem like they were just randomly fired around the map, the whole thing renders horribly for most people with people and buildings just vanishing for no reason, and that's not even counting the lag and new netcode problems. And then there's all the stuff that was supposed to be put in that actually wasn't. [editline]22nd September 2012[/editline] And I have no idea how the managed to pull this off. At the rate I play it will be around a month before I can clock up a pack of C4 15 hours a week, 10,000 points per hour = 150 cert points a week... Around 3 weeks. And that's if I buy absolutely nothing else

Speaking of 2142 they should add a titan mode to planetside 2. I wouldnt ever stop playing it.
I wish tank armor / weakspots worked better. It would raise the skill ceiling of tanks / heavy assault if hitting different parts (side, rear armor) did drastically different damage.
make titans cost 20k auraxium and then make them spawnable
Maybe they put the cert gain 1 decimal off because it makes 0 sense to for it to be slower now.
Yeah that's complete bull, they really need to up cert gain. They'd really be lying about the whole "no play to win!!!" thing if they expect us to deal with this gain rate while people with memberships or what have you get it much faster. [editline]22nd September 2012[/editline] Wait I just hopped in game and I still have as much certs as I did before I went to bed. Did they remove passive cert gain again?
Passive cert gain was wiped last update I believe, or a few before it.
I heard a rumor they were making things really expensive as an experiement to see how people did progress in perk trees under those conditions. But its just a rumor. In any case it won't be like this for release. We'll have passive cert gain (slow for non-subs), along side things probably being more balanced (i.e. C4 not costing 500 but maybe gal spawning still costing that much). Also the XP boost implants and subscriptions you can buy. I'm personally holding off on playing until they fix all their bugs they have in the current build and fix some of the cert stuff. plus get some of the other features they said' theyd have in soon next week. And the apparent performance issues the latest patch brought. Though kinda wanna DL the patch just to experience planetside without gal spawns :v:
Finally got a beta key. Time to kill stuff, in the name of the Republic.
