Last hitting does a few things. If you zone correctly, last hitting should never put you in a gankable position. Last hitting also guarantees you gold and experience. If you're a better last hitter than your opponent, you're gaining more gold and exp and denying them the same (from last hitting your own creeps). You're also keeping the creeps in the middle of the lane and depending on what lane you're in, that can set up an easy gank for your team.

I hope they don't go down the HoN path with DotA 2 and just go for a piece for piece recreation of the original, keeping WC3 style attribute system as opposed to LoL's rethought AD/AP system.
I also hope that the camera isn't glued to the floor in DotA 2 too, something that also annoys me about HoN.

To elaborate, the WC3 engine is very limited in what can be done and DotA has pretty much strained it as much as possible. It being on a better engine immediately opens DotA up in terms of future heroes, interaction in game, mapping, replays, dynamic spectating (spectating live games), built in guides and all this other stuff they talked about when Game Informer announced it.
