I just bought Shen for tanking (since my friend is tired of tanking and no one in normal goes tank).
I suck with him though. Do you guys have any tips on how to build shen, and how to not be garbage?

A handy item for Shen is Randuins Omen, port in on someone about to get raped by Jax or Yi, use it, taunt and rape at tower. Fun.
Just wrecked face with Vlad. Had a little under 1k AP with 4k hp. Me and WW were the only good ones.. our nasus was brazillian and tried to feed intentionally, karthus was getting owned by teemo, eve had to solo bot because nasus dc'ed.

I BD'd the Nexus towers while the enemy was doing Baron, then our super minions nuked it with me, I got it to 700 hp, then I got ganked by 5 people. :C
But then we all pushed and won.

Abilities: EQQEQR. Max Vorpal. Max Taunt. Max Feint. Always get ultie (derp).
Items: Merc Treads, Aegis. Get those two items every game. After that it depends on the team. Look at what kind of damage they have. Look for whatever is prominent (at least 3/5 on the other team do prominent AP/DPS). Force of Nature and Randuin's Omen should be your first two tanking items.
How to not be garbage: taunt and don't miss. Alway keep an eye on the minimap and sidebar to know who needs an ultie. Taunt the right targets. Taunt enemies out of channeled ulties. Try not to KS with Vorpal, but if you feel like you [i]really[/i] need the money go for it.
Stomping custom games with tank Gragas. Even the 1400+ players are too easy.

Should I get both Force of Nature and Randuin's?
I've been trying to rush randuin's after getting doran's shield and boots, and it feels like I'm not durable at all until I get Randuin's. Is that good, or should I be getting Aegis first?

Merc Treads and Aegis should cover you until you get a Randuin's OR a Force. It depends on the team. If they're 3/5 AP, Force. If they're 3/5 DPS, Randuin's. If they're even or have a hybrid or someone just plain fucking weird (Nasus), just figure out who is doing more damage.

Aegis should be a priority as it give early game stronger survivability for you and team.
You can farm effectively and harass with Q, so after some pracice, gold won't be much of a problem.
Force of Nature is very good, but against casters. If enemy team has like 1 caster I guess you can leave it for later/ pick something like abyssal very late game or Banshees if they have "nasties".
Randuin Omen : lovely item, prefferably get Hearth of Gold first (unless there are a lot of teamfights early on, then buy the other part). Don't rush it like mad though, it's a lot of armor, but having 2 of it's core items for a while ain't bad either for mid-game.

I would recommend Aegis first. It's cheaper and better of an item for your teammates too :) If you get ganked, use your taunt through walls to escape by the way.

Don't get Heart of Gold first. It will never pay itself back and with your taunt the passive on it is too valuable.

I don't like Sunfire on Shen because there are better DPS defense items and his farming ability is fine without it (passive and QQQQQQQlolenergy). Something like a Thornmail is MUCH better, especially because you can force enemy DPS to attack you.
I haven't like Guardian's Angel since it's nerf and I didn't like it much before. It should be the last item you get.

Tanks shouldn't be buying guardian angel. People tend to lose interest in people who have GA.

It isn't bad on someone like shen who has a taunt
it isn't really bad at all but I just don't get it on Alistar because I don't die anyway

Getting a GA on Alistar is a bit overkill when you already have his ultimate to supress most of the damage received.
Not saying it's wasted, but there are better items for him to go then a GA in my opinion.
