I doubt most people who are running PuGs check your gear instead of your gs.

If you're close enough to inspect, the GS they see is the actual GS.
If someone's doing a "LFM 25 LK MUST HAVE 6k GS" on /lfg or something, this will return a faked value, forcing them to actually look up your stats.

it doesn't mean anything. it's only to see how good peoples gear is at level 80. no purpose on a character that is leveling

Everyone hates on GS because they say "GS doesn't tell you how good they are" or something to that effect. Funnily enough, it's called [i] Gear [/i] Score for a reason - because it tells you how good their gear is.
This is useful on things like VoA when you don't need any skill apart from to not stand in fire, and even things like ToC can easily be pugged with a few noobs in the team.
My final point, is that about 75% of the time, if their gear is good, then they are quite good as well. I mean, you might get the odd ICC drop if you tag along an alt run with your guild, but you're not gonna get much more than that if you really suck.
That's my rant for the day done :D
