A legitimate survey would NOT be done in the MineCraft forums, as it would be biased.
I would have to stop people in the street and ask them well designed questions such as "Have you heard of the game called MineCraft" or "What do you think of the game?"
Also... I caught this just now. I didn't even know this was there.
A quote from Notch here: http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1066626-I-Talked-To-Notch-Something-Unimportant-3-5-11
"The game has gotten a huge boost in sales and internet talk now, and I'm almost scared to see what's going to happen."
I'm just saying...
How would that even be a real survey, Minecraft has sold 1 million and half copies world wide, going around in whatever country you live asking if people know about it would not reflect the popularity of minecraft within gamers.
You're talking about whether or not people will stop playing this game, the best place to ask that question would be to a minecraft player contrary to what you're saying. You tell me it's biased but if you ask me if I'll ever get bored of minecraft, yes I will, I will take a break. One day it hits me, I imagine this big project in minecraft I want to make and here I go again.
This is the thing about minecraft, it's been said, what makes the game great is NOT the actual game itself, it's the possibilities and imagination of the player.
If it wasn't for SeaNanners, that might not have happened.
Call me crazy, but there's a chance that this thing may be headed downhill. You guys might not like that, but you're in the MineCraft forums, of course you wouldn't want to say that. This is where I worry.
I didn't even know who SeaNanners was until about my fourth month of playing.

The proper way to take a Survey Sample is to collect it from an unbiased source. For example, if you were to go to a Rave and ask everybody walking in what their favorite music was, you would get a good majority saying "Electronic."
If I go up to every Minecraft player and ask them if they like Minecraft, they will say yes. Just like if I ask Facepunch if they like Garry's Mod.
And this is what I was taught in Statistics about surveys.
No it just means more idiots thinking one person leaving = the whole thing going down the toilet because they overreact.
While we are still on the subject of "Is X responsible for Minecraft's popularity" I think that name drop in the TF2 blog was defiantly a factor in Minecraft's growth.
It's funny that there is a lets play with someone nicknamed "X"

The reason they'll say those things is because YOU WENT TO A RAVE WHERE PEOPLE WHO LIKE ELECTRONIC MUSIC GO. And of course, if you ask a Minecraft player if they like Minecraft, of course they will say yes, because why would they play it if they didn't like it. And there's some people of Facepunch who dislike Garry's Mod, JLea for example.
They started their Minecraft playthrough well after the game had sold hundreds of thousands of copies. In fact, it was only started in December.
There is no one person to attribute to Minecraft's success, the reason Minecraft has become this popular is because it is a good game and only because it is a good game. It wouldn't matter who did what on Youtube or in reviews or whathaveyou if it wasn't fun to play.
Oh so when Minecraft sells great it's because it's actually fun but when MW2 or Black Ops sells well it's...what?

... because it's fun.
For instance... I find Garry's Mod boring. I don't come here to talk about Gmod. I come here to talk about Minecraft, Portal, and Electronics.
This forum's accommodating enough to have all three of those things. Kudos to Garry for that.
nah people at my school are just getting into it
I dont even see what in the recent updates would be anything to hate, im glad betterlight was implemented, now thats one less thing for me to reinstall every update, and the game keeps getting more things to do and play with. The people who dont like minecraft usually have never played it and only care for games that look very nice, but minecraft is the gem of games that can look like some 1990 game and gather a million people in the age of almost realistic graphics and yearly released fps's. I personally think the game will live for a good long time, and will continue to grow until a bit after the game is finished completely.

What, you were asking if minecraft would live longer, not if everyone in the planet liked it. Therefore you should ask the minecraft players if they see themselves playing minecraft in the future, not if random people like the game. Since they're the ones playing the game, keeping it alive. That's how I see it, I might have misunderstood you.

Should explain what I meant.
Again, for clarification, you CANNOT go up to a minecraft player and ask if they like it. Instead, you have to select your sample from a population that presents a fair opportunity for people to like Minecraft or not.
What I would probably do is find some general gaming forums and have users fill out questionnaires. This should provide statistics from gamers and thus it would be more focused on people who were likely to like or dislike Minecraft rather than not even know what it is, while still providing non-biased results.
The fact that 2 years after it was publicly available, there's still more than a single person buying it a day (and instead there are ~10,000 buying the game each day) should be enough to tell you that the game is still quite popular.
At this point it seems you just want to argue the semantics of sales statistics. I really have no clue what position you're taking, but the game doesn't have to be hailed as the best game ever by every single person who bought it. If people are talking about it, it's not on it's way out. When sales start decreasing over time, it's on it's way out. If all of a sudden, no one was complaining, it generally also signals the end of the game's life. If there's no one talking about the game, it's basically dead.

I started the thread saying "Look, I'm worried that Minecraft may be dying."
I then continued it with "Well, this is all valid, but something tells me you guys are a little biased"
And then I said "Maybe I should just collect some opinions from the web and see what we have."
Sorry things got jumbled up in the shitstorm that brewed.
And I agree, opinions are opinions, and are separate from the actual quality of the game. But opinions will affect how Minecraft does in the future.
Just watch the little "XXX have bought the game in the last 24 hours" thing. That number keeps climbing. Daily.
Now, granted... It's not quite as much of a rapid growth... Indeed, it does seem to have plateaued somewhat... However, the number isn't falling, so it's certainly still being purchased en masse.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. You have to realize... The game's not even released yet. It's an open beta. There'll be plenty of people buying it upon release. More than now. It'll peak again.
And then it'll peak every time he releases an expansion pack for it, or moves it to another console, or does something major. We are only in Beta, you know.
I agree, when he releases the full version, even more people will buy it and the company will have another boost of profits and players.
If we continue getting game breaking updates and the mod community drops off a cliff, sure. Right now, though, that's not the case.

That is something we kind of have to expect with a game that still is in beta. I bet the updates will be elss buggy when the game is fully released.
Agreed. I, along with some of my friends, was playing Minecraft long before I even knew who SeaNanners was.
Who the fuck is SeaNanners anyway?
I came into this thread expecting a person to ask whether minecraft is close to reaching final release, I am now going to leave this thread solely disappointed with how shitty this thread ended up.
Though just saying regarding the op: I doubt it.
gamers arent looked down upon anymore wtf you talking about?
this may be the dumbest thing I've ever heard
Who the fuck is SeaNanners anyway?
I want to know the same thing.
For people asking about SeaNanners: http://www.youtube.com/user/seananners?blend=1&ob=4#p/c/33B2523A0F571466
That's his playlist for his minecraft videos. I recommend watching them 'cause he's a cool guy. Wish he did more.
