I always pick up the water one, but it's just personal preference. Pick up the one that gives you most advantage against the first couple of gym leaders (Excepting the first one since the leader changes depending of the starter you picked up), for example.
I went for the grass one.
I don't like choosing starters based on how easy it'll make the rest of the game - it's not like the main game is difficult. Also, I don't want to read up too much on the game - I think it'll be more fun if I discover everything myself until I get into metagame
I only choose the one that looks most badass, I don't give a shit about what type it'll be.
Gotta say I am jealous of all you guys on here, poor me has to wait until Sunday for it to be released.
At least the Pokemon Black & White Tour is hitting the mall near me Saturday, I can get my fix then.

Tepig is fucking adorable, its final evo is badass, but the fire/fighting typing is quite stale, as you said. Going with Oshawott, nicknaming it "Lolwott?"

The Japanese Episode with the Duckletts is my favorite so far.
Those three are bastards. Also, EVOLVING is so much more badass in the newer series then the old "glow white and poof" shtick.

It makes the game harder. You can only catch the first pokemon you find on each route, if a pokemon faints it's dead, you can never use it again and you have to give every pokemon a nickname. Some people add extra rules like no using potions or only buying 1 pokeball per town, but I think that'd be too hard.
