I don't think this spells an end by any means. Valve gave away portal for free for a month before portal 2 came out and that was pretty successful. They also regularly give away their shit for next to nothing.

If they were experiencing a decline, I think they looked at Valve's example and saw their path out.

Valve is seen by nearly everyone as being effectively Jesus has never since before HL release ever seemed like they were even lightyears from financial trouble. THQ has been in talks about bankruptcy and all the issues with DarkSiders 2 launch and stuff.
