God damn is this game hard. Now I enjoy all manner of roguelikes and Dungeon Crawl is no exception, but I don't think I've ever gotten very far at all. :saddowns:
If it's any consolation the early game is the most difficult part.
Things get easier once you make it to Lair.

*cough* Mennas/Nikola insta-fuck buttrape *cough*
My very first ascension. :toot:
I was a little confused about where I should be getting my 3 Runes since I didn't really know where they're lying, so I picked one from Shoals, one from Snake and one from Vaults (which I missed if not for Ctrl-F "of Zot").
I didn't want to go to Slime because FUCK Slime and I poked at Tomb and it almost insta-killed me so I gave up that as well, I had no idea where to look for more runes so I just finished it.
Fuck Fire Orbs, by the way.

I won thanks to that Lajatang, I noticed that I was actually very very squishy but with every hit I'd regain a MASSIVE amount of HP back so it turned out well in the end, also that Armour, I found it on D:13 :smug:
Does anyone still play is, or is it just me?
So, just found this. So are magic using characters supposed to be much harder than melee, at least at the start?
[editline]7th November 2012[/editline]
Ok fuck, I hate those cunts that use invisibility so fucking much.
Oh man, I forgot about this. I do remember that I never got anywhere in this game though.

Yes and no. They're generally more powerful but at the same time they die much easier.
If you want an easy Mage to play you should totally go Wizard. They get the best early game survival spells.

I keep doing great (for the first 5 levels), then either some fuckface with invisibility kills me or I end up like now, sandwiched between a NPC that does huge damage, and like 8 assorted enemies.
Funny thing is, I didn't even die due to the enemies, but because I forgot to check hunger and starved.

Learn from your mistakes.
Use Meth Cloud against Invis enemies or just run.
Make sure you're always well fed.
Remember to use scrolls of blink and teleport to avoid dangerous situations.
Crawl is a survival game at it's heart. You get a certain amount of resources and you have to use them at their fullest to overcome the obstacles.
Oh hey this thread got revived, cool.

I can't even come close to matching this run, I don't know how I managed to get this high a score.

Berserkers are unstoppable beasts if you can manage the hunger but Demonspawns are really hit-or-miss race. Try Orc instead, they can eat rotten corpses too.

I've been doing that, Still can't come close to that game, I had an amulet of faith, Trog gave me like 5 magic axes throughout that playthough.

Usually never had a problem with food, this time I completely forgot. Oh well, it's going better every time so.
Also, why does taking greyed out options make everything strange? Chose the short sword (which was greyed out), start with some super enemies that one shot me. Try again, start surrounded by lava and have to escape the dungeon.

Don't expect to win during your first 100 or so games.
Just keep learning from your mistakes and you'll win eventually.
It took me several years to get to Zot and win.

You're just unlucky. Starting vaults are totally random.

I know, I'm much better then I was when I got that score, I haven't matched it cause I don't play berserkers anymore in order to actually get better at the game.
I play this every now and then but I never get too far because of priests or some shit.
When it comes to roguelikes I prefer cataclysm but this is fun too

Smite is really annoying, especially for mages but that's where you have to learn to use scrolls of fog.
They can't hit what they can't see.
Alright, meeting the ghost of one of my former (and more successful) characters gave me a huge game boner.
Sorry for bumping this ancient thread! However, I am in need for assistance.
I can't download the pre-configured PuTTy anymore(probably taken down for some reason) and i'm trying to get the game to look like how it does in the OP(font-wise) but I can't find the terminalvector font anywhere. Help would be appreciated(Also people start posting again would also be fun).
Edit:
Oh god i'm retarded, like really retarded. Managed to find the font URGH sorry for the unnecessary bump.
Compared to say, Cataclysm, how indepth is the combat system?
I'd say about the same but my memory is a little foggy.
Dang, I wonder how I even managed to reach 7.2k as my high score, which was like a year ago.
I just lost a game but my highscore was only about 2.8k and it felt like my best game ever.

No separate body part damage, nor is there any penalty for being injured. You just whack the other person, or shoot them, or zap or throw shit at them or however you want to go about killing them.

That being said, you still have to be very tactical if want to have any hope of winning, although I suppose that's just a staple of any roguelike. You're going to want to go in with a plan. If you're an orc gladiator, for example, don't even think of trying any sort of spellcasting until you've nearly maxed your combat skills.
Also, converting to Nemelex Xobeh and getting that first deck of wonders at level 3, then drawing experience - SO GOOD HNNNNG
and then you draw another card, and it's wild magic, and it kills you instantly.
Not cool, game. It was a promising run too.
