My current game is my first one where my city didn't fail miserably! Infact, i'm making so much money that i can't use it fast enough.

Good, now give me advice :v:

Well, i just sort of went with the flow and kept spamming residential, commercial and industry. Place police, education and firefighters so they cover everything as you would expect, and just keep a close eye on seperate funding. Keep funding just a bit over their current use. Do this all the time, while constantly just making huge zones.
High density zoning is the key to making money, don't be afraid to use it early. Be aware that bloody LOADS of people will move into the city very quickly, so you have to keep a close eye on your infrastructure!
The only issue with this is traffic. But only if you don't plan your layout ahead (which i didn't in my first city. Bit me in the ass). You have to use avenues quite alot, and even freeways have to cross through your city. Take account into the space you need for that later!
Is it allowed to post Abandon-ware games on facepunch? Because Simcity(1) and 2000 are abandon-ware and I can give links if I am allowed to.
This is the basic layout i used throughout my city. It's horribly boring to look at, but it handles the traffic.

Black is freeway, red is avenue and blue is road. Each square/zone is 4x8. Probably far better ways to do it, but it sure made me rich.
I just let my cities develop with no real plan.
If I have to demolish to make room for things, I do.

I do that but my city just ends up in terrible debt and nothing I do prevents it.

Are you getting the big apartment buildings? They are where the money comes from.
Working on fixing up one of my old regions in the game. Trying to get rid of a lot of the dirty industry areas. Also going to add more regions and make the regions flow better into each other
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/Z2g0J.jpg[/img_thumb]
Transportation network for the whole region so far.

This is the Downtown district, which was also the first region I developed . There's a lot of downgraded buildings, and there's also a very well defined corporate strip.

This is the Uptown part of my city, which is composed of mostly medium class commercial workers. Very few downgraded buildings, and a smaller corporate presence compared to Downtown.
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/1EIKj.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/NHRbC.png[/img_thumb]
Also made a sprawling suburban district.

Good god man. I run out of money before I can start a damn town!
I want a simcity 5.
Cities XL will have to do.
Mods. Thats how I do well :v:
One mod pack (CAM) gives you a shitton of new tall buildings and makes taller buildings grow like they were supposed to. (Un-patched glitch prevented the tallest towers from growing) It gives you a lot more mass transit options and things like bus stops and subway stations integrated with the road/avenue.
have you guys checked out openttd?
have you guys checked out openttd?
It's fun, but no-where near SimCity.
I'd play SimCity 4 more often, but the random crashes make it almost unplayable.
Losing an hour of effort because you forgot to save doesn't feel fair.
I played the hell out of 3000. But my cities always turn to shit after awhile.
have you guys checked out openttd?
I never heard of it.
Good god man. I run out of money before I can start a damn town!
How exactly do you start out your city? You shouldn't bother with water, education, or public services until you have at least a thousand people in your town. At first all you'll need is a power station, residential zones for them to live and industrial places for them to work.
Started playing Simcity 4 again. Trying to find all the cool mods I used to have.
It's sad that there are hardly any games now using isometric graphic.
I have loads of good memories of Simcity 2000. I also played 3000, but I was sad they took arcologies out, those were the coolest thing ever.
simcity 4 was amazing, and still is
The only key to a successful city is only having electricity and trash as utilities at the beginning, and only adding fire dept., health, education, and others when your advisers start bugging about the lack of 'em. And always scale the budget of everything so that their capacity is just above their usage.

You are ALL losers. :smug:
Also SC 2000 was the shit, can anyone post a link to it?
I had a really good Traffic rating and no congestion in my city of 5000000 people but I was still having high rise buildings becoming deserted due to commute time even if they walked across the street to get to work.
Heh, I thought this was dead. Oh well, continue building.

I saw this on youtube randomly clicking through videos before finding it on cracked.
Truly terrifying. This guy should be hired to plan actual cities, and possibly given a private blimp and an underground lair as well.
It sucks. No matter how hard I ever tried I very rarely, if ever, got hire-rise buildings.
But, then again, my city layouts were always crap and I never gave a shit about the environment in any of my cities ever.
