Most of these problems are your own fault. Basically you're blaming the service because A. You didn't make a Live account to play MP in the first place and then complain that you have to make a Live account. B. You made some old account and can't change the name. I have had no problems with GFWL, in fact, I enjoy using it very much, even more so than Steam's in-game overlay. It's very smooth and the menus are where they should be. I had no trouble at all setting up a Live account, took 2 seconds and I was instantly playing. TL;DR - OP is dumbfounded and doesn't understand how to use an interface so he blames it on Microsoft.
it's not a poor interface you just don't understand it k
The only thing I dislike about Windows Live is that DLC must be bought through the system, meaning it'll cost you money because Microsoft are colossal pricks. Other than that, I love being able to chat with my friends on Xbox Live whilst on my PC.
GFWL locked me out of UaW's multiplayer because of regional restrictions. How's that?

Games for Windows Live is cool because it links to my Xbox Live account, but it's fucking ridiculous that it is a required part of SAVING IN A SINGLE-PLAYER GAME ON STEAM. A friend gifted me GTAIV on Steam and I have to say so far it's just been pissing me off. First you have to get a Rockstar Social Club account which is totally fucking useless for me since I don't plan on recording any videos, and then you have to run its little program in the background at all times during the game. After exiting the game once I noticed that it didn't close, so I right-clicked it to exit and I noticed that it's fucking set to start up with Windows by default! Fuck off! And then, when I go to save the game, of course I need a Games for Windows Live account and I need to run Games for Windows Live at all times during play. Sigh. That part was easy enough since all I did was sign in with my Xbox Live account. Still annoying that it is yet another program running on top of the game. So then I get in-game, I get the mobile phone, and I want to play multiplayer. I press my custom-mapped numpad + key to bring up Steam Community Overlay....and nothing. Steam Community Overlay doesn't fucking work in GTAIV! It does on the initial menu, but after that that's it! That was the part that really got to me. And then, to top it all off, I caught SecuROM running in the task manager. Really? REALLY? In the STEAM version of the game, I have to run four extra programs on top of the game, one of which (the most important one) is disabled. I'm severely disappointed. EDIT: Oh yeah, and did I mention that multiplayer kicks you if "your computer is running too slow"? An online game that boots you for low FPS. I can't even play online with my friends because of this, and the FPS doesn't even dip to unplayable levels!
Considering how poorly optimized this game originally was, this 'feature' is fucking ridiculous.
Makes me think that some day all new games will include this... and of the way developers and hardware producers could profit from this... Utter shite, someone erase this please.
Steam is the best platform for talking to people, buying games, and updating games.
I bought Viva Pinata for GFWL, biggest regret ever. Not only did it take me like 4 days to download because every 10 minutes it gets some error causing me to reset the program, but then when it FINALLY got to 100%, it didn't recognize it as being finished and it didn't let me install it. So I looked through all the files and installed it myself. I am never using any program besides Steam again.
Microsoft needs to stay out of my video games.
