I always end up getting massively self-concious about my playing whenever I play ranked too, i'll probably end up quitting after a couple of games out of nerves and stress if I attempt a ranked marathon to get gold.

You should. He becomes hilariously tankable and pretty much unkillable except for disables or 3 people using their abilities on him. In sustained engagements, he is king. Pair him with Ichor of Rage to get insane attack speeds.

I think the most sensible solution I've seen mentioned (not officially) is "gold splash." The last-hitter still gets the full amount of gold for a creep kill, but an additional sum is split between all allied units in a moderate area. Not a big amount, just 2-5 gold per minion splashed, maybe. Possibly a higher amount as the game progresses.
It'd be enough to drastically improve a support champion's ability to afford more varied builds, but also wouldn't change the experience for solo-lanes to a notable degree.
