i dunno what the correct term is but he needs to have that 'dent' under his nose, it would add some crucial depth to the face
That, and he also needs those little scar marks back, IMO.

Scar marks?
Ah, knew there was something off around that part of his face!
Also, what do you guys think about G-man's briefcase, should it be black with the Black Mesa logo on it, like in the original HL, or just be a plain grey with no logo like it is in HL2?
I think it should be plain gray since the BM briefcase was most likely part of his 'disguise' in HL1.

The Black Mesa logo was probably just an artifact of when the G-Man had little to no actual presence in the story until the very end. I say go with the plain grey briefcase.

Actually, now that I see it in that color, I really, really like it. I'll re-color the skin, maybe add a few little blue-black veins against the red.

Episode 3 confirmed.
Since it's been brought up, about your Barney texture, I really like the way you made it because it's pretty much the only HD Barney that actually looks like him, but you really need to fix the eyebrows.
Brows are one of those things that you need to be very careful at when designing characters, since they are one our main means of conveying emotion and personality.
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/cseSq.png[/img_thumb]
As you can see in that image, your Barney's eyebrows are arched in a way that gives him a permanent (and rather unnatural) 'surprised' look, while Valve's has the eyebrows following the brow ridge, giving him a more natural, 'neutral' expression, which is what you should be aiming for. Other than that you got his features spot on.
tl;dr basically do this (excuse the shitty mockup):

Ah, I'll get on that right now...any other changes? I thought the chin on mine somehow seemed wider than vanilla Barney, dunno why though, maybe it's just me.

That's probably because Vanilla Barney's chin/goatee is a bit darker than the other parts of his facial hair.

I think that's because his chin looks flat in comparison to the original, thus giving the massive chin illusion. Take a look at Valve's texture and you'll see that they made it look like it's actually protruding from his jaw.

Just gotta say: Thank you all for your tips, advice, knowledge, and just general feedback. Like somebody said earlier, the biggest thing we have is not textures or shaders or props but the fact that this is all a group effort with everyone having a say in what is made.

Maybe I'll just start from scratch again, as I've learned a lot since I made that. Hopefully I can make it even more Barney-like.
Oh, and incase people want to know, I use real peoples faces for all the skins. I try to find people who look very similar to the characters, then use their faces and tweak them to look closer to the originals. For instance, Barney's was the face of one Kyle Chandler.
[img_thumb]http://www.aceshowbiz.com/images/wennpic/kyle-chandler-super-8-premiere-01.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TAHiHY6qh3I/T7KRNTwK0BI/AAAAAAAACRk/hUa_L912ZCs/s1600/bill+nighy+sly+guy.jpg[/img_thumb]
whom I thought looked very Barney-like^. G-man's was actually a picture of Bill Nighy ^.

Yeah, the only reason I'm not using the original people's faces is because 1) there's not that many pictures of them, 2) I've only found one high quality picture of the original face models, and that was of Grigori. 3) I need very high quality pics, otherwise they're not high quality skins, hence the reason for using Kyle and Bill back there. By hq I mean pictures like this one, very hq:

One thing that bothers me about your Gman skin is that some parts of the face has some flat and ugly as hell shading compared to the original facemap. Just look at his left cheekbone and the area where his philtrum should be (like Joazzz mentioned) and then compare those parts to the ones on the original texture.

It's partly because (as FCG mentioned on page 11) the new Gman skin is more flesh-toned than the original. Unfortunately this decision greatly affects the color correction effects, ie: the high contrast shading in this image. The skin -has- to match the original for it to look correct.
Here's the basic issue with the new Gman face compared to the old one (in my opinion); he looks to healthy and human. Gman's original styling was always made to have him look ghostly, thin and frail with exaggerated facial bone structure and an odd combination of pale skin and dark highlights surrounding the eyes and mouth (to emphasize focus on his unique eyes and the way he talks).
The new Gman skin there is far too smooth, flesh toned and healthy looking. That's the best way I can describe it... Take some of the life out of him!
Also, there's something about the new Gman's jaw and cheek line that I can't just put my finger on.
Also, there's something about the new Gman's jaw and cheek line that I can't just put my finger on.
I think it's just an uncanny effect because of the high res textures on a relatively low poly model.
Ooook, so, is this better?
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/hg1zU.jpg[/img_thumb]
His nostrils are a bit weird, but they're in the exact same spot as the defaults, so I might move em back a bit.
It's...like he's staring...
right....through me.
There's something that seems kind of off about his mouth and eyes, but it might just be his facial pose/model doing that.
With my weird monitor lighting it looks like goth Barney.
Also, I feel the eyebrows are still a bit too light.
They almost look like they were glued on.
how about you just touch up the stock skins because there is no way you can top them.
my 600th post is an essay about eyebrows
Hey, eyebrows are cool. They're my favorite part of the face.
G-man's was actually a picture of Bill Nighy.
I knew he looked familiar! Hence why I said it looked like an actor playing him. Well, at least we know who'd be a good actor for G-Man in a HL2 film, because he does look a lot like him.
question, if youre planning on making hd models for the characters, why are you touching up the skins before that happens?
i dont understand much modeling jingo but how can you be certain the old stock facemaps are going to be properly uv mapped onto the new models
The Bodies are what are going to be changed, mostly. The faces are going to be higher poly, and have hair "brushes" on their heads instead of just a flat texture, but their face shapes/face maps shouldn't change drastically, that way we should be able to just use the default layout for most of them. The exceptions being characters like Alyx, who has a very prominent seam between her face and neck texture, so we'd make the face and neck use the same texture map, eliminating the seam. If they do change too, I can just take the finished texture, and then modify it to fit to the new texture map.

I think I'm just about satisfied with Barney's upper face and hair, but there's still something about his lower face I can't quite put my finger on-
[editline]17th November 2012[/editline]
Maybe it's his "goatee"?
