It runs in the browser, but you can download a wrapper to make it run on its own.
I started a massive mine in the hopes of finding some diamond.
The top of the mine:

I kept digging until I got to the sea of lava at the bottom of the world. After a bit of calculating, I've found that I displaced about 4500 blocks in its making, and used 80 stone picks over 6 hours to get it to this point.
Everything I got from that thing:

Not one fucking piece of diamond :|
I hate my map.

Yeah, that's what I've started doing at the bottom. As long as I've got a massive hole, might as well put something in it. And have you tried pressing F? It adds fog, which decreases lag, which I didn't know for the longest time.

don't dig down a massive tunnel. Dig multiple single block tunnels spread over a large area.

More specifically, you said it was because of his computer, but it's actually because of the game itself having to do the whole shadow dealie every frame which lags (read: not just slows down) far more than just a shitty comptuer would. Don't even get me started on the whole day-to-night transition, that's a whole new area of rendering pain.
I was having lots of fun in infdev mining, then I remembered that we will lose our saves, so I got sad then I fell on a sheep and died. :saddowns:
I'm seriously going to kill notch, I spent about 6 hours on my infdev game and he's not going to ruin it!#%@#

I don't see why people are complaining over improvement. Just gen a new map and create something new with all you learned from the last.
