hahah wow
Supposedly, ORION was to become a commercial indie game. Clever on Prassel's part, but not clever enough to let go of your employees and hope they don't expose you.
I admit that I never saw this coming, but this is still sad. Conning your way to 20K and getting rid of the actual creative workers...

Unholy backlash incoming.
oh wait it's already here.
forgive me as I go on a bit of a rant.
this is exactly what I don't want to be when I actually get off my ass and attempt to make something remotely resembling a Game, I want to be a Designer not an Idea guy.
You see boys and girls, for those of you who don't know, an Idea guy is someone who has no practical skills or little or no conceptual skills to contribute to the game yet arrogantly continues forth and essentially yells at/berates the work of/bosses around people who actually know what the fuck they're doing and contribute to the cause like they are his personal slaves. a complete prick who rules over (or tries to) his team with an iron fist.
Now I sadly have no have no technical skills, I know what the machine should be but not how to build the machine, this is unfortunate because being a good Designer means that you have to be competent or have a good understanding of EVERYTHING THAT GOES INTO A GAME. EVERY. SINGLE. THING. though I have good conceptual skills, the forming of ideas and game mechanics and have an understanding of how to layer those ideas and simple game mechanics to make a game not necessarily more complex, but how to craft a fun and enjoyable experience. I also know what a good game should feel like, god help me if I didn't directly learn anything from games, I spend enough time playing the things. this is big part of the prerequisite for becoming a good Designer and it's actually a bit farther than most Idea guys get, but I'm still essentially an idea guy and you need dem technical skills to contribute to something as small as a mod or an indie game bros, everyone needs to work hard and be flexiable and multirole and that's exactly why I'm not on a mod or a dev team right now, as much as it pains me to see all these idiots directing games off cliffs while knowing I could've helped maybe have made those game so much better than what it became, but alas, I can't prove it with anything tangible.
wow, why the fuck don't I write the rest of my life story while I'm at it, Shesh.
That fuck... I bet nobody will download his mod.
get money
fire bitches
It's not a mod
What an asshole. I can't believe he got so money from that mod just wow.
It's not a mod
Mod made Game.
but yeah, no one is going to buy this, as an indie developer you don't have a lot of legs to stand on. Community support is one of the vital ones (if not the most vital one) because they will be the main marketers to persuade people to buy your game though word of mouth, because people trust the word of their friends right? if someone you know says the game is good you'll probably at least look at it which drastically increases the chance that you might buy it because of course, It is impossible for you to care about something you don't know exists :eng101:.
He just shot this whole endeavor in the foot, all those years of effort and hard work by all the people he fired will now amount to nothing.
Good job dumbass.
I also know a bit about what goes into selling and marketing a game as well to add too my previous point.
David Prassel is the biggest faggot you can find in the Half-Life community. Go look at his attitude on h2world.com forums. All he did is Halo with Dinosaurs, which sucks monkey balls.
this dude is a complete faggot
Wow. What an asshole. Indie development in it's darkest form.
And to think that I was even slightly interested in purchasing this. Well this guy won't be getting my money.
The people who got fired should sue him. Seriously, isn't there like a law to prevent people from getting fired without warning?
what's hilarious is the fact that the game isn't even that good (not to be overly insulting to the people who made it and have recently been fuck out of their work, that sucks, but let's face it guys, Orion is not exactly the most inspired game ever. it's a quake deathmatch shooter with Spartans, run of the mill generic shooter No.2,334,117,610 weapons, vehicles and environments, and Dinosaurs but I will give you that one, Dinosaurs are awesome.)
What the fuck is this guy thinking?, did he honestly think this game was worth that much and was that good that he felt he could just shaft everyone involved and be fine?, I'm still trying to understand how the fuck you would come to this conclusion.
Has this man gone completely fucking bonkers?.
This isn't just a cut and run prospect, since he's still planning to release and market the game apparently.
What a dick.
Guess I'll take this off of my to-play list
Fucking dick
Quoted for truth.
Holy shit what a sad excuse for a man.
And even worse, all that money won't even last 2 years if he's just another dumb partygoer / prostitutehopper / expensiveshopper / money-out-of-the-fucking-window kind of guy.
He sure acts like one already.
BRB starting a mod :smug:
You just can't justify something like that.
I laughed when reading Michael Prassel was trying to explain his actions.
The people who got fired should sue him. Seriously, isn't there like a law to prevent people from getting fired without warning?
Well from that I've gleaned from this thread so far, nobody signed any legal contracts or documents aside from an NDA when they joined the team. So it looks like none of them were ever legally employed. There is no legal proof that he ever promised to pay them.
greedy idiot if you ask me
Okay wait, so you're telling me that I spent 10 years modding games and learning to model and texture and map and a god damn ideas guy gets 20 grand and his mod on steam
there is no god
If someone writes a story for a game, he's not the ideas guy. Writing a good story is much more difficult task than it is to mod games.
On-topic, they should sue him. I don't see anything favoring Prassels' plead.
The game was bog standard and when I mentioned that the base gameplay was terrible and he would get next to no players or a proper community he just went quiet and no one even read the thread anymore.
Quite clearly didn't care and this just proves it.

He is the ideas guy though. If he did write the 'story' for Orion then obviously he's a terrible writer. It is a Halo clone pure and simple.

Yep, there's inspired by, and then there's straight ripping off, this was the latter.
I remember hearing about him being a douche some time ago though I'm not sure in what context, someone who know a bit more and who can reference the whole thing should email Rock Paper Shotgun as they have been promoting the game a bit and if they did an expose on Prassel it would probably significantly hurt his sales
From the Orion forums:
Hey Zolkowski,
First off, welcome to the boards.
Second, your thread will not be deleted.
The Polycount thread rang some truth - but of course was coupled with falsified information. There was a lot of passion behind it due to it being relatively new.
Spiral Game Studios started out as a modding group - which was free to play and of course non-compensated work. We are still a non-financed and non-compensated company EXCEPT for the KickStarter campaign which is being used towards the build we created for GDC.
Daniel, the instance located at Polycount joined roughly 18 months ago (Novmeber, 2009) when we were still doing the ORION: Prototype / Source Multiplayer Beta. The KickStarter campaign (first money we would ever receive) began and ended in February 2011. Daniel joined the team understanding that the work was for portfolio-building purposes.
He was unable to participate in his listed tasks for GDC / KickStarter - but he did do a bunch of work previously.
While I am made out to be a bad guy in the last few days, I don't think I, the company, the game or the hard working developers would be where we are today if this was a common occurrence or held a significant amount of truth.
I will be reaching out to these folk and attempting to mend things as I do want them to be aware that they are not only extremely talented - but that there time was appreciated.
I hope that helped clear a few things up. If you have any questions - please feel free to ask.
