Winter last year was a horribly frustrating experience.

I'm paraphrasing here but it was something like: "If your account has not had Steam Guard enabled for 15 days before the 20th of December you will not be able to trade" in the trade window and now if Steam Guard isn't enabled you can't trade, this will prevent people from getting stuff from their alt accounts.

It just wouldn't be in Valve's interests, i.e. draining wallets dry.
