Then by all means place your longbowmen on high ground and in bushes. If the rest of your force isn't directly surrounding them they'll just get run down by cavalry.
But yeah, at any rate, the total war series is the absolute best rts series ever.
Just keep some spearmen near by, and enable skirmish mode for your missle units. That would usually take care of the cavalry problem.
I'm thinking I should buy this now even though I'm not getting my new computer for about a week.
I can't remember how well I ran the demo but I know it wasn't horrible.
Can someone post the minimum/recommended stats for me?
I manage to run it on high with my shitty computer.
ATI Radeon X1650 Pro
1.5 gb RAM
AMD Sempron 3100+ 1.8 ghz

1.8 GHz Processor
512 MB RAM(1 GB recommended)
11GB uncompressed free Hard disk space
128 MB Graphics card
100% DirectX® 9.0c compatible 16-bit Sound card
8x Speed DVD-ROM drive
Windows 2K/ME/XP/Vista
Personally, I've ran the game on my other rig with 1GB ram, a 6600, and a 2.8 single processor. 3000 men with medium graphics gets me about 20 fps.
However, on my newer rig I can run the game on max with 30 fps with 6000 men. 2GB ram, 8800GT, E6750 (oc 3.2).
If you ask me, I think the game is fairly well optimized.
Hm.
I have a 6600GT, 768MB of RAM, and a 2.5GHZ P4 processor.
Hopefully that can run it ok.
The new computer will have 3GB RAM, 2x8600GTs 512MB, Quad Core 2.4GHZ or something like that.

Archers on skirmish mode stand even less of a chance - in fact, it allows them to get away from the spearmen you have protecting them.

Only if the enemy is close enough to get to them, in that case you want them out of there.

That only works if you're fighting a faction with limited cavalry - if you're fighting, say, the Moors, than any units not attached the the main force body will get picked off by missile cavalry.

Good point. I stand corrected.
I'm too lazy to add anything about kingdoms :p
Also have any of you tried the mod Stainless steel?
It adds a lot of new stuff, and makes the AI better, heres the link http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=314

Longbowmen can place stakes down in front of them. Stakes = Cavalry Carnage.
The only threat a good archer group faces is ranged cavalry. So fighting against the Mongols, you don't want ANY archers, or Cavalry. In my opinion when fighting the Mongols all you want is full stacks of the best armored infantry imaginable. If you can survive the missile barrage, you might survive the Cavalry Charge.

The cavalry will be lucky to even get to the stakes if longbowmen are shooting at them.
Oh god I'm horrible. I put some helpless mayans in a north-french village, then bombarded them with 10 Trebuchets, 5 catapults and 5 mortars :o

Bowmen can't really do anything against heavy cavalry.
The greatest strategy game I ever played.
I really love how it brings out the medieval brutality...
GLORY TO THE KING!

that´s hilarious.
you shoud´ve seen me encircle an indian village(yes, I have Kingdoms) with musketeers, the poor natives didn´t even get out... :v:
I love this game to death.
But how the fuck do you set up stakes?
I can't see the command for that?

Only the english have it.
Starting from longbowmen.
:4chan:
I love this game even more now.

Actually I think the point of longbowmen is that they can.

And you do it in the setup phase.

I can't do that :(
I'm too merciful.

Empire: Total War. Napoleonic era and the American Colonies. Due out in 2008.
The medieval series is possibly the best RTS series ever. I'd disagree that Rome is better, Medieval has everything Rome has, only enhanced. I'd say people would only prefer Rome because they like the time period more.
I didn't know empire was going to have all of that, just the updated era.
And I like rome because it has a certain charm, medieval 2 has better mechanics I think, but rome had something else, I think it did epic scale much better than medieval does.

You aren't getting it.
I'm not talking about having masses of guys fighting a field battle, I'm talking about using small groups of partisan fighters to pick off enemies as they move around. Much more sensible than pitched battles.
This thread made me buy this, this is epic beyond comprehension, I recommend it. =D

Rome seems to be on a bigger scale. I can put more units on screen at once on Rome then in Medieval but that's probably just because of the updated visuals.
Also anyone else have a problem with medieval II and AA? If I turn it on I lag like a bitch.

No, that doesn't make any sense at all. It's like using a bunch of tiny armies to fight a big one, except since they're small they wouldn't stand a chance. It would only make sense if you could quickly retreat your forces before they start taking casualties, but a 20-unit stack typically has more ranged firepower than a 'partisan' army anyway.
I usually make 'em stand in square and wait.

Medieval 2 has larger army lists and you can change the unit sizes from the options menu, only the default setting is smaller than rome.

yes I know this and so does Rome.
Except Rome goes to a bigger size. 80 cavalry is tops in Medieval and in Rome I think it goes to 140(?).
I'm going to go check this.
Ok top cavalry amount in Rome is 108 and is Medieval it's 80. Top infantry amount is 160 or 240(peasants). And in Medieval it's 150 (peasants) to 120.

Play as the Turks, that is your main starting tactic. You send groups of your missile cavalry out to harass the enemy. The Turks have NO good starting infantry. So you just get those missile cavalry and start shooting until you run out of ammo, then withdraw. It works wonders, especially against the Byzantines.
I feel happy.
I just won a battle earlier that was 700 of my men against 1500 men from the Holy Roman Empire.
I won mostly due to the AI's stupidity and Bastillas.

What faction were you? France?
Er England, my bad.

Oh... I thought he meant something completely different.
