When I first played Lost Planet I didn't really think a massive alien bug thing the size of a house was going to suddenly shoot out of the ground right before my eyes and tear me to shreds. When that sort of thing does happen it's bloody scary.
Allies in games scare the fuck out of me. "Ah, finally a safe room, let's find some amm- is that a foot OH GOD IT'S AN ENEMY AUGHAHGHGHGAHU!" And then you proceed to unload your mag in said ally's face.
You know when you're playing a game, and you're trying to get in the developers head to figure out whats a trap and what's not?
So you then you're (I'm) thinking "Wait, no, what if the trap is that it actually is a trap but its just looks so obviously like a trap that I wouldn't think its a trap but it really isn't except the developers know I'm thinking like this so the would be isn't a trap actually is a trap it just looks like it is a trap so it actually isn't a trap."
Goddamn, this happened to me all the time in Serious Sam. Some traps were traps and other "traps" weren't traps at all. You never quite knew what the trap would be, either.
The sounds you hear from the radio when you walk in Military Warehouses in STALKER: CLEAR SKY.
They are just...disturbing
The mission to get to the transmitter there in Clear Sky, I made the mistake of doing it at night. So those of you who have played it may remember the little surprise that shows up after you use the transmitter. Leaves me cowering at the top of the tower, clutching my trusty AK and my meagre ammo stock, waiting for the dawn in abject terror.
A mutant roar and a horde of Bloodsuckers tearing into the encampment, killing the remaining soldiers and blitzing through the compound to congregate at the gate, and I'm monitoring their progress through my grainy-green nightvision and their glowing eyes - and the short-lived firefights and screams that marked the demise of the soldiers I had snuck by

Headcrab in the vent in HL1
You know which one I'm talking about
Headcrab in the vent in HL1

There's, like, twenty of those in the entire game, not counting those behind crates or other props.
In half life 2 there a part where you shoot a wooden plank to make a platform to fall down to get a supply crate. After you shoot it about 10 dead poison headcrabs fall down onto you. It scared the poop out of me.
Like someone said before:
PLEasE! DO! not FeEd tHE ANiMULS!!
from Alan Wake, scary game, the only part that is bad is when you fight an enemy. the camera slows down, the contrast goes up, and only focuses on ONE enemy, when there are 3 axe wielding darkness overtaken murderers running towards you at full speed.
Freaking.
Bloodsuckers.
I was playing COP last night and I was waiting for an emission to start at ~18h...bloodsucker came out of nowhere and started attacking me.(Was right outside of Skadovsk too.) I didn't have any ammo for my AK, so I started shooting at it with my pistol. Pretty soon I realized that wasn't gonna work, so I took out my knife and FFFFF it got close enough to suck some of my blood. I went back to shooting with my pistol until it got close again and I KILLED IT WITH A FREAKING KNIFE. A FREAKING KNIFE.
FREAKING.
KNIFE.
YOU TRY DOING THAT WITHOUT ALMOST NEEDING TO CHANGE YOUR PANTS.
Watch my LP. The frame-rate is shit with fraps so i resort to knife in almost every mutant battle.

I know which one. I slid my mouse off the table I jumped so much.
I cannot stand in games when they scare me so much I jump. It is horrible.
[editline]11:11AM[/editline]
Also, fucking suspicious looking supply crates/ammo caches etc.
Like the one the guy talked about above, when you crack the wooden plank to get to the box and a bunch of poison headcrabs drop onto you.

Also, to people that think penumbra isnt scary.. These guys are everywhere, always searching down halls, and when you're spotted they kill you with a weapon.. You have no way to defend yourself.

It's fun, but scary when you're caught and you run in a room, close the door, throw stuff in front of it and run on and you hear the big "BANG" of the door being kicked down.

Underwater enemies are and always will scare the ever loving crap out of me. I actually hit the screen out of instinct when I saw that underwater animal thing in HL2.
