Can anyone explain how the character building and customization works?

You can't create a character like you can in spore. They are already made and have a type (nature, necro, sonic, bionic, fire) which decides how useful they'll be in a mission.
You can customize your character/s with accessories and weapons with stats which in turn make them go up in level. The better the equipment, the higher the character level. As your Player (i forgot the actual name) level goes up, you can unlock better missions, characters, bonuses, etc

No you're wrong. This is 100% wrong and stupid.
The game straight up tells you: Darkspore deal double damage against champions of the SAME TYPE
Don't use a nature hero against nature enemies. Reasoning: The "nature" darkspore are corrupted nature champions, darkspore that have overrun the genetic laboratories specializing in creating those nature champions. They've become accustomed to fighting them.
Customization is as follows:
There's a lot of champions. I guaranty that there will be DLC for more.
You can unlock a number of champions up to your cogenitor level (cogenitors are what control the champions derp de herp). Some champions require a higher cogenitor level.
You get loot from completing missions and random drops. When doing a mission the loot is rolled for by everyone in the party highest roll gets it. This is frustrating when scrubs get blues >:C
At the end of a mission based on the number of gold medals you got you'll have a percent chance to get a rare item. The loot you get will usually be better than most drops (only blue drops are better than if you fail a roll). Chaining missions lets you get more gold medals (the number applies to multiple rolls). Getting 10 gold medals (two perfect missions) gives you around a 35% chance to get good gear.
Depending on your creature type there's different gear slots.
Weapon, Feet, Offense, Defense, Utility are shared by all creature types.
Most creatures also have a hand slot but the creatures that don't get an extra utility slot.
You place items as in spore (click drag, click drag some arrows to modify the items, scroll wheel to scale).
Colouring is exactly as in spore. Base coat, modifiers etc.
When you're done with gear you have two options. Sell it for DNA or strip it of it's stats and use it as a detail.
EG say you have a helmet that looks really cool but you got a better one. Convert the first one to a detail, use it, equip the new helmet.
It's a very intuitive system and it works amazingly.
There are 100 levels, and you get an "unlock" for a hero each level, so i am guessing at LEAST 100 heroes, and with the amazing customizability, I doubt that anyone will meet a team that looks exactly like his.

Like how everyone in Pokemon seems to have One pokemon that I have in my Group
I don't get how you can say the gameplay is so great, when i used the beta, it seemed so boring and repetetive, while at the same time being extremely slow to just walk around. The only thing you really do is just spam the normal attack and spells, because you can just swap between the beast thingies and get almost full mana every after you get back to third again.
Atleast that's my experience from the beta, though i didn't get very far, but it seems really repetetive and boring over time. I also don't feel like i want new items, because so far, i've not gotten anything that really makes my weapon look insanely cool or stuff like that (one of the big things in MMO's is the looks of your armor).
Did you play co-op? Thats they way you should, makes it a whole lot more fun.

Tried it once with randoms, didn't really make that much of a difference for me, but i can certainately see it being fun doing it LAN, or possibly over vent or skype etc.
Still the game is a bit slow paced for me :)
I also made my heroes look awesome, if you didn't play a lot and say your character didn't look good, did you expect your character would look like the destroyer of worlds after 10 minutes of gameplay?

Nono, but just from what i experienced, once you get the more rare weapons and armor and stuff, that you swapped out with the old ones, they just looked the same.
That's why i asked if they actually changed that later in the game, and make it look more awesome, to give me factors that makes you want to get better items. :)
I'm probably just going to wait for some gameplay vids to come up on youtube in the later levels, to see if it's going to be worth buying, and if it appeals more to me, the beta was just pretty dissapointing to me in the beggining. ;)
I actually liked spore, unlike most people.
And I actually like the darker feel this one has.
I would've liked Spore if my planet didn't have war declared EVERY 5 FUCKING MINUTES.

Spore is most fun before space phase. After that it's just grind spice. Bo-fucking-ring
But this isn't the spore thread.
IMHO darkspore is awesome and if you don't like walking around maximize move speed gear / choose champions with teleport abilities. The level eight cyber ravager has a squad skill teleport. I combined him with the AOE lightning champion and oh my god so much rape. teleport, chain lightning, AOE lightning burst, channel thunderstorm, swap to the ravager, use his Q and every enemy around him takes damage equal to the last 30 seconds. Not a lot of things can survive that combo.
The PVP in this game will be super intense. Vent it up!
