Before consoles took the larger end of the market, there was a lot of innovation in games. Now, with AAA games requiring multi-million dollar budgets, the companies investing in them prefer to invest in a "sure thing". Essentially, they only invest in what they know works.
Innovation has taken a back seat to profit, and now, we are here: every game is a Gears/MW/Halo copycat, every game has the same brown/grey look, every game tries so hard to be edgy and cool but are simply boring, uninspired titles that are REALLY feeling old.... then the only indie games that seem to make it are the overly pretentious pieces of shit like Braid.
Honestly, I have more fun with my Atari 2600 than I do with most current-gen console games. Now that's fucking sad. Why? It's all same-fag shit. It's all been done before a hundred times. When the hell am I gonna get something new?
Oh, I just have to look at PC. Holy shit, Total War? Wurm Online? Battlefield 1942? Mount & Blade? Freelancer? Homeworld? Arma 2? Supreme Commander? Let alone fucking awesome classics, like Doom, Quake, Thief... meanwhile, consoles are largely not backwards compatible, meaning those PS1 classics you loved (like Final Fantasy Tactics, perhaps?) OH LOL YOUR PS1 BROKE? TOO BAD.
Fuck that. I'm going to mod my games (Natural Selection, Desert Storm, and a hundred others come to mind), I'm going to play old AND new games, and I'm going to do it with whatever controller I want. PC gaming means freedom from bullshit online modes (that they can turn off later, like the original X-box), proprietary tech, over-priced peripherals, hard copies... you can back up all your data without voiding warranties, you can use whatever network and voice software you want (Hamachi, X-Fire, Steam, Teamspeak, Ventrilo, etc).... it's all about options. I have 2 terabytes of storage on my PC (not including any external drives), and it didn't cost me $200 per 120gb like an X360. It cost me $69 per TB. Can you do that on your console?
What do I regret most? Buying a PS3/X360. Fuckers are collecting dust. They suck dick.
oh nice, anybody who tries to defend console gaming is getting a dumb. what a nice and thoughtful community we have here.

I sense his argument is: "PC gaming elitists, piracy" or something along the line.
Maybe going from a keyboard and mouse to a tiny thumbjerker controller is an "advancement" in technology
the pc gaming community is not respectable and mature what are you talking about
I used to play on console almost all the time, from Nintendo, super Nintendo and genesis, Nintendo 64 and playstation, then playstation 2 and the xbox. I moved from PC and became a PC game because of the massive amounts of RPG games that I be able to play, not only that but you can now download emulators of old consoles from nintendo to playstation and a bit of playstation 2.
One thing that I dislike about the consoles is that I often rage when I play a game where I cannot be able to cheat to get past a point. Sometimes I get so pissed off that I broke my controllers, and I once break my playstation, and several rented games... after I found out about cheat software called Gameshark and Codebreaker, I am relieved of most of my problems that I occured.
One thing that I do dislike about PC games is how you your system will tend to be outdated and you need a new computer every 4-6 years after many games require powerful hardware. I don't got a job yet to obtain a $1,200 state-of-the-art computer that can run any game in the highest settings (I choose these computers so that I don't have to upgrade again until 4-6 years). However I was pretty lucky to get one because of my graduation money that I gotten my grandma that help payed it off.
One thing that I now dislike about the new consoles is that I have not heard of any news of the cheat software makers like gameshark and codebreaker making anything for Xbox 360, and any new generation consoles... after checking back into the websites, I heard codebreak had discontinued it's production because they afraid to get sued by microsoft if they developed any cheat software from there system, I don't know why they didn't make any thing for the PS3 and Wii...
Now I will have difficulties playing most of the xbox 360 games if I ever get myself an Xbox 360 and play some games that I missed on playing that are not available for the PC. Like Fable 2, Final Fantasy XIII, Rock Band, and all other games that I missed out on. In the future, i wish more games are out for the PC along with the consoles as well, then avoiding the PC and proceed with the consoles.
what many people don't realize that without consoles to bottleneck the advancement of the industry, we don't have to spend thousands of dollars every month or so- otherwise, the technology would advance rapidly, if there was a market- suddenly, there would be no market as the only people who can afford the entertainment are the rich
I own a console to play video games with my IRL friends
the fucking truth
Well written. That should be added to the OP, seriously..
I regret ever buying my xbox, my computer though, two years old, $1100 at the time because I needed everything, was a great investment, I wish there was a way to track the exact amount of time I've spent on it, because it's no fucking joke.
God, these type of threads are always a bad idea to create.

1) the ability to play console exclusive games
2) being able to relax on my couch and stare at my large hd tv (i realize you tried to counter this point in your post, but what do i do once i plug in my usb controller? lie on my bed and stare awkwardly at my small monitor? sorry, not as practical as resting on a couch)
3) motion control (in the case of the wii)
I literally only have one reason for owning consoles. Exclusives.
I do, however, agree.
I only disagree with the "Console Multiplayer" comment.
Sitting next to your friends and playing a game beats the shit out of playing online.

you know im not sure what it is about console gaming, i prefer some of the games over pc gaming. like it or not, some console games just dont work on a pc as well... then again the same thing could be said the other way around.
im not saying the developers arnt limiting their games according to aging hardware, because they are. But they are choosing too, why dont they stick exclusively to pc. truth is, there is just more money in console gaming for developers.
it is sad to see pc gaming falling behind, but it had a good run. and who knows, maybe someday they will find a way to re-energize pc gaming.

I love you for mentioning Homeworld, have an heart. Look at small companies such as Best Way; they dare to do something different.
I miss the smartness system. :sigh:
Get over it, Sir.
I can't believe there are people who care THIS much about something so trivial. Who cares if someone has a different system then you?
I have both a gaming pc, and consoles.
The thing I like best about consoles is that you can actually get together with friends(in real life) and play some god damn games together. The annoying thing about this gen of consoles is that they make if unbelievably hard to do exactly that. All developers focus on these days is the online play, which in any case, yeah, i probably would buy the game on pc if there was the option.
Still, consoles are easy to take places, easier to set up, less expensive to buy(i had my xbox a year before I was even close to getting a gaming pc) and some games I honestly like to play better with controllers.
Console fanboys are faggots, but I have to say PC elitists are quite possibly the worst of the bunch.

PC's have no exclusives right?
Hook your TV up to your computer and set your desk back a few feet or make some special arrangements if you value your lay-z-boy or giant TV so much.
That would fall under console exclusive, not that it matters, in my own opinion, I think motion control is fucking stupid and makes you look like a flailing retard.
At my school, I am the only person who games on the PC (of the people I know which is most of them in my grade). Everyone else is a gimp, they're obsessed with modern warfare 2 on their PS3s and XBOXs. They're brainless. From the 4.0 honors students to the braindead stoners and jocks, they can't fucking listen. I tried to tell my friends about Bad Company 2 when it first came out, and they just looked at me and started to ignore me and talk about how they were "quickscoping some guy from across the map hurrrr"
Stop making these threads people, you aren't going to convince anyone. Why do you care what other people do if it doesn't affect you?
Well clearly you didn't read it, since his point is that it is affect games as a whole.
I think you all should let people enjoy what they enjoy :colbert:

the pc has nowhere near as many exclusives as consoles, not to mention i'm not interested in anything the pc offers exclusively.
i can't hook my computer to my tv that's all the way downstairs. now you're just making the whole "solution" very impractical. i shouldn't have to buy "special wires" and whatnot when it's simply much easier to plug my console into my tv.
motion control is fun, you don't have to make crazily erratic movements as often exaggerated.

1) Wtf? You would buy a $300 piece of shit for a console-exclusive game? The rest of your arguments can be done.
it is sad to see pc gaming falling behind, but it had a good run. and who knows, maybe someday they will find a way to re-energize pc gaming.
Well, I mentioned in a console vs. PC thread once, that PC gaming is actually sort of heading back to the way it originally was: It was run by small studios, putting out big, detailed, innovative, and well thought out games. Wolfire Studios (Lugaru, Overgrowth) the upcoming Natural Selection 2, Star Ruler, Mount & Blade: Warband, World of Goo, Killing Floor.... that's just a handful of upcoming or already released games that are made by small studios that have done a very good job creating something new and exciting.
I would expect more like this in the future.
the pc has nowhere near as many exclusives as consoles, not to mention i'm not interested in anything the pc offers exclusively.

Are you serious? I keep hearing people say that PC has nowhere near as many exclusives as consoles... Umm, clearly, you don't follow PC gaming news at all. For every exclusive on a current-gen console, there must be AT LEAST 100 PC games you will never be able to play. Not that all of them are good, granted, but there are mountains of games console gamers never hear about that are absolutely amazing, and they are simply too detailed to ever be possible on a console. Have you ever heard of Dawn of War? A great Warhammer 40K RTS that console gamers will never get to play. I could list a mountain of games you probably missed living under your self-imposed rock prison, but honestly, look for yourself. There is a wealth of PC games out there that have never seen the light of day on console.
Also, it doesn't take "special wires" to hook up a PC to a TV. Most TVs have a VGA port and an HDMI port. Nearly all computers have at least a VGA and many modern ones have HDMI (or DVI which can be converted to HDMI with a $3 connector) Nothing special involved at all. Most of my friends have their PCs setup on the big screen. In fact, I run a 23" monitor and I'm running the smallest screen of all my RL friends. It's the only screen that will fit on my desk. My friends typically run on TVs in the 32" to the 50" area, and some use wireless keyboards/mice, some use wired.
1) Wtf? You would buy a $300 piece of shit for a console-exclusive game? The rest of your arguments can be done.
there's always going to be a consumer base for expensive, fun stuff- but these things are usually temporary solutions, early releases of technology that are good for quick bursts of profit
this is the reason we should not be afraid of things like kinect games
1) Wtf? You would buy a $300 piece of shit for a console-exclusive game? The rest of your arguments can be done.
i like you singularized what i had said. games not game. it's worth buying a "$300 piece of shit" to be able to experience dozens of awesome console exclusives that will easily have made my purchase worthwhile.
I first came to facepunch in '09 thinking it was just a gaming forum. Now, i see that its a forum full of PC fanboys who whine and bitch and think that gaming consoles shouldn't exist period.
Bring on the boxes.
The console debate is stupid. Who cares what platform you're on, as long as you're having fun?
