So what's the best way to ensure a safe return home. I know I can use a compass but I'd liek to leave neat/consistent markings around my map that I could easily find and aren't just 20 block high dirt towers every 50 blocks.

Actual buildings you can enter and take cover for the night, nice and tall with lights on top, etc.
