For my roofs I tend to have it so that the roof fits along the top of the walls, then one block in it goes up a step, like so:

(0 is outside, 1 is the height of the wall, 2 is one block higher)
Then I place step blocks (wood or stone depending on the roof) all the way around the 1's facing inward, except the corners where a normal block, a half block or a torch or something goes

It gives buildings a nice natural sloped roof

Digging upwards to get out of a giant cave system, gravel fell on me (on Peaceful so it's not that bad) and then lava starts to flow down the hole that I dug. I guess I'll dig up somewhere else then... :colbert:

It's beautiful, I would say the only thing that needs changing are the torches and the cobblestone.
