I've done mining branches and just straight dig to the bottom and back up. All I find is Charcoal. Rarely iron, 2 diamonds, some redstone and that's about it. Where the fuck do I find some diamonds??? I dig in the right area, I know because I watched videos on how to find diamonds faster.

Usually when you start seeing lava pools in a cave, diamond will be close. Only problem are the bad guys.
